kepoktsk turns preacher.
a charleston Newspaper Man Comes
Cut as an Evangelist.
Henry D. Howren, who will make bis
debut'** an evangelist in Charleston to
day. was five years ago a reporter on the
Morning News. Tho announcement in
the Morning News yesterday of his ap
pearance on the platform was something of
ft surprise.
Howren was a hard drinker, and although
be was an original writer his habits stood in
the way of bis promotion, and lie seldom
bent a {dace more than a short time. His
work here was abaut bis firs
| n the newspaper line. He
filled assignment) for ‘everal months in
the city department of the Morning News,
but his addiction to drink finally Jlost him
his place. ,Af!erthßthe did some corre
epondence here for outs depapersnnd finally
drifted out of sight. He was afterward
employed on the Columbus Enquirer-Sun,
ami the ><n the Coarlestou papers, where
he made quite a reputation. Who Howren
is will be best toid in ills own language.
“I was taken from my father when a
boy by, the late Bishop George P. Pierce of
Georgia, who educated me. I was gradu
ated from Emory college, Oxford, Ga., in
. lygy. The month aftor graduation 1 was
nominated to the legislature bv the demo
. rstic convention at Oaine.villeto represent
Alachua county, Florida. I‘ carried the
COQ-.ry. which was republican, by 4 to 1,
and was the first demierat who carried it
after the war. My op none it was L. G.
.Dennis, who is generally known as ‘the man
who made Hayes Presiden he having
siejen the vote of the county in ’7:i, on the
vote of which the state binged. I had only
been a resi ient of the county one month
when nominated, and roy seat was contested
on the ground of non-residence. The com*
npttea of the House of privileges at:d elec
tions seated mo on the technicality that as
I had been away at school, and my father
had ben /a resident of the county two
years,-it was my legal residence.
“Mv- father, who is pastor of the church
at Jasper, Fla., is now completing his fif
tieth vear in his regular itinerancy as
preacher and presiding elder. He lost all
his tons in the war but me. 1 was the Ben
jamin of bis old age, and it was the one de
sire of his life for me to preach. I felt
called upon to preach when 1 was at college,
hut I never got my consent tdl now. lam
going to a ply for t:e license of a ‘local
preache .’ lam going to devote the rest of
my life to religious work, making a Special
ty of temperance work.”
' Ii a man has ever suffered from tho slav
ery of strong drink, Howren is that man.
As ort time ago, after a long continued
spree, his life was despaired ot; his voice was
entirely lost and his limbs almost refus-d
their office. When be rose from his bed it
was with a different feeling than any he
had ever experienced, and he is now going
to devote his life to temperance work.
Two Nights of Opera.
The operas ‘‘The Sleeping Queen”
and “Specter Knight,” will be given
at the theater tc-morrow and Tuesday
nights, and at a holiday matinee on Tues
day, Tbe music and action of these operas
demand ability ands udy, and the rehear
sal last night promised a splendid perform
ance. The leading parts will b - sustained
by Mis. Haynes, Mrs. F. Goette, Mr.
Rebarer, Mr. Walker and Mr. Drummond.
These ladies and gentlemen have been
seteted by Mr. Stewart, with a view to tbe
demands of the operas, the music
cf which requires for its rendition
talent of more thnn ordinary me. it. A
glance at the names of the participants will
at once bring to mind that iu almost every
prominent entertainment for ebari y their
services are ca led for, a id have been most
cheerfully given, and it is felt that the
hearty support of the community is
due them in their effo ts to give
an entertainment of sterling merit.
Tb perpnrmances are not for a .y char t
aide object, but are presented on their
merits, and those who have studied
to give the operas feel assured
that all who attend will be fully
compensated for their patronage.
Those invited to attend the last rehearsal
were surprised aud charmed with the ele
gance of the music, its perfect rendi
tion and the smooth acting of
tbe singers. Mr. Joseph F. Doyle,
stage manager, has looked carefully
after the details and situations. Mr. Stew
ard, the director, has given great care to
ward securing a perfect rendition of the
music. Both operas are sploudidly costumed.
The sale of seats indicates a full house here.

LEAD LUNCH FOR HIS RED MAJ
ESTY.
Shooting* at tho Devil Livens Things
Up at 'Frisco.
From the San Francisco Examiner.
John Clifford, a re crank, had
what he termed a “spell’’ on him early yes
terday morning, and made matters very
lively in the buck yard of a lodging house
on Mission street, near Ninth. He got out
of bed about 6 o’clock, attired only in his
night robes, grabbed ft revolver, and, run
ning into the back yard, opened tire at a
pile of rubbish and declared that it was the
devil.
“I’ll put him down!” ha shouted. “I’m
Sam Junes, I am, and was sent beie to kill
the devil.”
His etlm at the rubbish pile was wild and
a number of bullets came near finding lodg
ment in tho bodies of neighbors who came
out to see wbat was up.
Officers Hawkins aud Hickey mado a
flank movement on tbe crazed man and
grabbed Dim from behind, but not soon
enough to prevent him from firing another
shot, the bullet fi ding a lodgment in the
tiaby part of tbe shooter’s leg, and inflict
ing a flight wound.
After his wound was dreseed at the re
ceiving h spital he was taken before tbe
commissioner of lunacy.
“I am suffering from too much religion
—loo much Jones,’’ he said to the uoc
tor.
“I have been a member of the Salvation
Army two or three months, and have reg
ularly attended tbe revival services held
at the pavalion and the churches. I have
not slept for throe nights. Tho oxcitement
obtained such a hold on me that last night
I went clear off my bead. I must have
jumped out of bed while I was asleep and
txk a revolver from my valhe, for I dimly
remember pointing at my leg aud discharg
ing it..”
Turning up his trousers, he displayed a
lacerated wound.
“I am as sa e as anybody,” be continued.
“All I want h something to strengthen my
nerves and enable me to get over this re
ligious fever. You see when a man gets his
head cho~kful of the belief that tbo world
is full of wickedness and woe, it makes him
unfit for anything els®, and he is, practi
cally speaking a In aiic.
“If religi n doesn't treat me better than
it has I shall go back to tho old fellow
1 serve the one that treats me best,
every time, though I tell you I have ba na
preity tough case in my time, and L don’t
want to s art in again if I can help it.”
Au o der was made committing Clifford
to tho Stocktou asylum.
