the CITY3 SANITATION.
The City to Look After a Thorough
Cleaning of Unsanitary Places.
Alderman Harris, chairman of the health
and cemetery; committee of council, said
yesterday that a more vigorous sanitary
or jj has been determined upon by the
council, not because there is any immedi
ate danger, as the health of the adult popu
late n is good, and cares of malarial com
n'amts very few, but ho thinks it well to
ousli the city sanitation more vigorously
L i timely and prudential sanitary step.
Alderman Harris gave Supt.
Chary instructions yesterday to clean out
all the city vaults as rapidly as possible, and
seven wagons and thirty men will be em
tiloved in tuo work from now on. Oa Juno
j city will furnish free.chlorides of mer
cury that citzens may use it as a disinfect
ant and aid the health committee in the
work if sanitation. Ur. Harris said that
tho committee will use the phenylo
in deodorizing ar.d disinfecting vaults.
He said that for _ water closets
he finds no better agency'than a solution of
copperas in the proportion of one q'uart of
the crystal to live gallons of water, and he
advises its daily use in all water closets. It
is an inexpensive and effective disinfectant.
Alderman Harris says that it is a mis
taken idea to cement tho bottom of vaults,
but that on the contrary there should not
even lie a brick laid in the bottom, as sand
is tho best disinfectant in the world,
and if tho vaults are constructed on
this plan the soil absorbs and
and disinfects the foetid poisons, and noth
ing but ammonia would then be given out
by the contents.
'it is understood that an effort will be
rondo in council to-night to amend the ordi
nance providing for the construction of
vault-, so tt at the brick nad.cement bottom
will no longer be required or permitted.
Tho work on the crematory, Dr. Harris
says, is progressing favorably, and is being
weli construct and for the purpose for which
it is intended.
A VETERAN FUBLISHER.
Leonard Scott’a More than Halt Cent
ury in the Publishing Bufeiueas.
Leonard Scott, the venerable publisher, of
the Leonard Scott Publishing Company of
PiiilacHlphia, and the sutevssful pioueer of
the reprinting of English magazines in this
country, left a day or two ago for the
north after s; ending the winter in Savan
nah. Mr. Scott is nearly 90 years old, and
he still retails a proprietary interest in the
business which he founded. He and Mrs.
Scott have been accustomed to spend tho
winters in tho south fer many years.
Before his retirement from active busi
ness Mr. Scott spent muph of his time in
the south. Ho is one of the oluest, if not
tie* oldest, publisher in this countrv, and is
full of r. minisceiice* of the early history of
reprint public'tionx
The first reprint of an English magazine
in this c >untry was that of Blackwood's
Magazine, which was commenced in 1 825.
It did not provo remunerative and the en
terprise was abandoned. Eight or ten
years later it was a’tempted again,
iu il a reprint of the Foreign Quarterly
Jieriew and the Metropolitan Magazine,
together with Jilack'iuod's, was begun, hi
a yra or two th ■ Fdenburgh and West
minister Bevies were added, and after that
the D.ibli . University Magazine, the
C hristian Observer an I the Chris!inn
1. dies' Magazine, all English periodicals.
Mr. Sc. it's connection with t.o business
bga i ip ISIIS, and the firm of Leonard,
Se e! re Cos., was organized in 18H, Mr.
Scott being the managing partner. All yf
the m gnzuies that had beeu reprinted
by the predecessors of the firm were discon
tinued except Blackwood's. Tne co-part
nership was changed in tho sixti-s to its
present title. Mr. Scott’s connection with
the work of reprinting English publiea
tio s brought him into close contact with
tho literary men of the country, and
although he is now close to 90 years old, his
reminiscences are full of interest and they
contain much of valuable history of the
publishing business.
MENTAL DISORDERS,
Two Persons Adjudged of Unsound
Mind in the Court of Ordinary.
r l lireo inquests of lunacy were held in the
court if ordinary by J udge Ferrill and a
jury, yesterday.
Mrs. Indiana Williams, tho country
woman, wh -e sad case was noted la-t week,
v.;in adjudged of unsound mind mid inca
pable of managing the affairs of her late
liusbanu’s estate, ami her br ithor, Mr.
J unes B. Horni g, was appointed guardian
of her person and property. He gave bond
in the sum of? 1,200, anil qualified as the
guardian of his sister. Mrs. Williams’ loss
of reason is attributed to grief from the
death of hor husband.
Elizabeth Francis, the colored woman
whose insanity was announced in the Moiiv-
Pi ■ News recently, was adjudged
insane and will be conveyed to the
asy u!:i hi a few days. She was tho
c impluinant two weeks before against a
colored woman who was sont to the asylum
from ti e same homo where the Francis
woman lued, in Liberty street lane.
Aleck Harvey (colored) was found to ho
cf sound mind and was discharged. It ap
pears that the week Aleck spent in jail gave
him opportury to recover from a pro
tracted spree, and the jury refused to find
him insane, and Dr. Chisholm’s testimony
was to the effect that Aleck is now of
sound mind.

A Little Too Hasty.
Brunswick, Ga., May 37. JCditor Morn
ing News: The hasty dispatch sent to your
paper and which appeared in your last
Sunday morning’s issue, in relation to tho
Brunswick Riflemen and a prominent
citizen of our town, is calculated to do in
justice to both the riflemen and to Mr. du-
Bignon, the gentleman referred to. The
information upon which it was given was
not procured with sufficient accuracy on
our part, and we do-ire. to withdraw all of
it that cas s any reflection up.on either Mr.
dußignon or the Rifle company.
The circumstance-, accurately stated, are
as foilows: The Riflemen had procured
permission from M sirs. Goodyear & Kay,
agents for Barber & Swan, to put their
camp upon an unoccupied tract of ground
near the residence of Mr. Goodyear, but
desiring to pirocure au electric Jight for US9
in their drilling at night, they were told by
the Brunswick Light and Water Company
that it would be impossible to erect an elec
trioTight ai a point as far south in the city
as the point named, and Lieut. Morris, of the
Riflemen, came to Mr. G odyear, of tho
firm of Goodyear & Kay, and asked per
mission to erect the camp on some uuoccu
pied lots of the Brunswick company, as
Mr. Go-dyear understood, upon Newcastle
street, i stead of which the lots referred to
were adjoining tho lots of Mr. dußignon,
and tho drilling at night aud at 4 o’clock m
the morning disturbed him, and he notified
Lieut. Morris, wiio said that if he found
that the noise was such as to disturb the
neighborhood he would remove the camp,
Mr. dußignon stating to a member of the
company that if tuere was no other place
where they could conveniently drill, he
would remove from town for a period, so
that the military company might have a
fairoppor. unity to prepare f r the encamp
ment. U pou submission of the matter by
Mr. dußignon to Mr. Kay, vico president of
the Brunswick compatry, the riflemen were
at once notified to eft Hire a their location,
which lias been done, and the purchase of
the lots by Mr. dußignon wasfri •pur:-ua ice
of a refusal of theso lots given to him ear'v
in January aud not at any advance if
price duo to this fact, b it purely a business
transaction having no con ection with this
matter fii any niauuor whatever.
The above corrections we cheerfully make,
and regret having sent such a dispatch
upon insufficient information. We apolo
gize to Mr. dußignon for tho article, and we
request you to publish this as an act of jus
tice to the parties. C. W. Dennino.

Cancer
Is a form of blood iiois n which is not un
derstood bv the medical profession as to its
real nature and character, but it is evi
dently hereditary in its nature. It may ac
cidently develop itself wirhour auv predis
position Or evidence of such existing poison.
The knife or caustic salves have heretofore
been the so-called remedies for it, but all
honest practitioners will tell you t at this
treatment fails to cure, aud only h istens
fatal results. Thousands of cases of epith
elioma (skin) cancers, and a great many
cases of scirrhus cancers, have been entirely
cured by the use of Swift’s Specific, It
forces the poison out through the cancer it
self, and the pores of the skm.
My father had cancer: my husband also
had cancer, in fact died with it. In 1875 a
lump came on iny nose, w.iich steadily in
creased in size and alarmed me. I used
various remedies—salves and other applica
tions, aud finally tried to burn it out, but
the sue re l nr,mil worse than ever, growing
larger and more angry, until I determined
to try Swift’s Specific. 1 to k tho medi
cine, jand it soon made a complete euro. I
kiioiv Tint S. S. S. cured me, because I dis
carded all o. her reme lies. This was several
years ago. and I huvo had no sign of a re
turn of the career.
