\ew York, May 35. —Who would have
‘posed that fashion would extend her
over grief? And yet not only fashion
Yiu’ her younger sisters, whim and caprice,
-remaking themselves objyed. New fabrics
for mourning are put forth as regularly by
the manufacturers and examined with as
painstaking interest by shoppers as goods
for street or ballroom wear. New styles
for mourning are decreed by modistes and
milliners every season. There ate revolu
tions of fashions in widows’ gloves, there are
“specialties”and “latest shapes” in widows’
mantles and wraps, and novelties
| n mourning slippers. Mourning
jewelery varies from one spring to
another, and it is a matter of some interest
to hear the comments passed on the May
importations of mourning parasols. A
breach of etiquette may be involved in the
variation by a fraction of an inch of the
aepth of the hem upon a crape veil, or the
choice of the lace which borders a haadker-
Ct yiilliners are agreed that women in
mourning are harder to please tha r any
oilier customers. Mourning bonnets and
hats have had more time and thought ba
ft wed oa them in proportion by designers
within the last three years than any other
s;iecies of headgear, and the result bus been
a rapid evolution. Not an effect produced
11 auy material but is now copied in black.

which does not suggest its decorously weep

In second mourning.
One of the problems of the hour is how
to find sufficient variety for the bereaved.
In many large establishments fully one
third of all the space devoted to millinery
is given to the display of mourning, and
no two pattern bon nets are allowed to ap
proach o::e another in design. Some days
ago a milliner said to me tuat to keep witn
-11 the bounds of recogn ze i good tas e was
becoming a difficult matter. People are
calling every hour for materials, colors and
effects which, according to the usual canons
they should not permit thetn>Blves to use.
Despite it? serious character mourning garb
is so fur subject to fashion and fancy that it
is not amiss to point out the respects in
which ii ougiit to be distinguished from a
simple black costume.
Mourning is worn for longer periods, as
a rule, in the United States than in most
other countries. In Francs the period pre
scribed for a widow is one year and six
w;es., the year being equally divided b•-
tween deep and ordin.ry mourning, and
tne six weeks dev ted to the transition
through lilac and white to ordinary attire.
J. England a widow w avs mourui ig two
year-; heavy crane with long vail; i required
in.-half the period, the sec nd year includ
ing six months of simple mourning and
six of halt mourning. In this country it is
mual for a widow to wear deep mourning
i i two full years. Not infrequently it is
never laid aside or greatiy lightened.
>•'( r father or mother mourning is worn
fort e! e mouths and the same is true in
c.ce cf the loss of a grown-up child. Dur
ing half the year crape is required; for the
i-r n l period plaiu black materials without
crape i rimming. The veil is worn at the back
of tue bonnet during deeD mourning, but it is
tube distinguished from the widow’s veil by
its reaching only a little below the waist.
At the end of the year black silk, black and
white, gray, violet and lilac are often nut
on and worn for in iefiui e periods. For
grandparents the m urning period is ten
weeks in France, six inontus in England.
American customs vary. Crape for throe
months, plain b ack for two months and
the half mourning or light mourning tints
fnr a mouth or two longer is very- usual.
For a brother or sister mourning is won
from four to six months; for an une.o or an
aunt three months is customary in some
localities, a few weeks of ord nary black in
others. For young children French mourn
ing is three months, the English
mother weats black for six months.
In America the Euglishpeno l is
"hat one might call official, but in practice
the emblems of grief are frequently not re
moved short of tne widow’s period.
F 1 r relatives of the husband etiquette re
wires the wife to wear mourning until the

cloth, crepe rle Japan, light weight Bea
trice serges, E iglish frieze and the sheer
and delicate btack "ring cloth,” an entire
breadth of which can be drawn through a
finger ring; most of these latter stuffs for
second mourning.
Figured grenadines aleo are allowed in
second mourning and dull black silks, as
taffetas, failles and ottomans. Soie eclat is
rich-looking at a moderate p ice, and in
time one may put on black nun’s veiling
with as many as ten rows of inch-wide
black ribbons woven in at their own dis
tance apart.
When the mourning veil is removed from
the bonnet—by the way the new vogue of
the bat does not apply among strict people
to mourning, bonnets being worn on all oc
casions except by quite young women—the
crape bonnet may bo worn without that
accessory, or black not or straw strimmed
with btack ribbon substituted. It is at this
epoch that most of the novelities in mourn
ing millinery come in. Some of the most cost
ly bonnets for second mourning made up
this season are composed of dead black
baby ribbons laid in strips side by side to
cover the entire crown, the garnitures be
ing ruches of the same narrow ribbon in
side tbe brim and rosette > and puffs of them
on top. The baby ribbon is us df rstrings
and the labor involved in concocting such
a pieoe of headgear is what puts its price up
enormously out of proportion to the cost of
the simple materials employed. Second
nioufni g hats for young ladies are com
posed of black uet shirred over the fashion
able and picturesquely-shaped wire frames
and trimmed with black ribbons, dull jet or
black winged butterflies. The service
which jet is made to do is something in
structive. It makes sprays of every flower
under heaven to pleasure the woman who
finds herself debarred from crowning herself
with nature's colorings
The first flowers to be worn other than
jet are black velvet violets which may be
assumed shortly before, the expiration of
secoud mourning. In half mourning or
light in mriupc phe reign of the violets and
lilacs, of blacK. aiid white, and gray and
black, begins. Blat 5 k stnii white striped
silk with trimmingi of black ribbon and
steel makes a handsome half mourning toi
let. So and >es gray silk with steel embroid
ery, or gray brocade on a black ground
combined with silver gray satin and
trimmed with black guipure.
Not many jewels are allowed in mourn
ing. In first mourning dull jet and bog
oak are the only ornaments introduced. In
second mourning oxvdized silver is per
mitted, and in half mourning bright cut
jet, put on at about the same time with the
first feather. On the subject of diamo.ids
authorities are divided. The balance of
opini ,n banishes them from the mourning
toilet, though diamonds and jet have been
permitted this year in court mourning
abroad. Pearls are not disallowed in light,
mourning, but no gold ornaments are to be
thought of.
Stockings are of silk, thread, cashmere or
filoselle. In snoes one is forbidden to wear
any of the patent or varnished or glaze 1
leathers. Dull kid for the street, black
satin for the bouse if desired. Btack thread
gloves are worn in lirsi mourning, later one
wears silk and i:: half mourning unglazed
kid. Tha handkerchief, in heavy mourn
ing, has a black edge; after tue first few’
months it is simply embroidered with black
or left plaiu. Tue parasol and umbrella
are of black silk with black ebony handle,
tied, if liked, with a crape bow. For hair
mourning black lace parasols run with lilac
and lavender rib ons are displayed.
It is not essential to put cards or note
paper into mourning and very broad black
borders are m the worst of taste.
In ca-e of a v.-odding the mourning must
be put aside for a day.
Ihe etiquette of mourning is one thing,
the desiruoility of such minute rules for
expressing gradations of grief another.
Many extremely sensible women do not
care to publish to strangers or casual ac
quaintances their persona! bereavements
and avoid the ostensation of grief by wear
ing no mourning at all. White crape
irinimed with black velvet ribbons is the
usual dress worn by some mourning
women. Civilization may advar.o one-day
to the point of substituting simple, incon
spicuous dress for any form of mourning
