are the power behind the throne,
and applications have to . be an

recognition. It is certain that all appoint
ments made so far, have been through their
influence, nor only to satisfy their own per
l.nal aggrandizement in the future, but to
try and build up a white party.
Outside of this factional fight, Horr has a
little family quarrel to settle When Horr
went to Washington it seemed to be settled
hevond doubt that if ha was successful,
Girge Hudson would be his special deputy,
an office which pays *2,.500 per annum.
Since his return, however, he has shown a
disposition to ignore Hudson, whose friends
are liegi ning to get indignant.
Ii an interview published in the Equator,
Democrat a few days ago Horr stated that
Hudson could have any position within his
gift, but that Hudson was too loyal a re
publican to resign his position as county
clerk, which would be a democratic victory,
as Gov. Fleming would bave to fill the
vacancy. Hudson, in an interview pub
lished yesterday, states most emphatically
that Horr has never offered him the special
deputyship, aud that when he did he would
accept.
The democrats regard Horr’s excuse for
the non-appointment of Hudson as lame,
and are of the opinion that Horr is a puppet
in the hands of other parties whose wishes
he dare not thwart. The present deputy,
Mr. Fogarty, has resigned and the appoint
ment will have to be made in a few days.
Much excitement pievails in political
circles by the suspension of Dean from
office by Gov. Fleming. Dean says that he
was removed upon charges manufactured
by Hon. E. 0. Locke, aided aud abetted by
P. T. Knight. He doubts the power of the
governor to remove him without
trial, and says that he intends to
carry his case to the supreme court. The
democrats are indifferent to Dean’s re
moval—most of them would prefer to see
him in office. Then the northern republi
cans who are daily preaching political
equality will have to take a dose of their
own medicine.
Recent advices from Havana to the Cuban
press of this city are to the effect that Gen.
Salamanca is trying to purify every branch
of the government. He is very rigid in the
enforcement of the laws, and bandits need
expect no mercy from him. Executions are
plentiful, and if the present policy is pur
sued, Cuoa will soon bo rid of crime. Most
ail the manufactories have resumed work,
and our merchants are beginning to look
bright a^ain.
Key West has recently sustained a severe
los, ia the death of John White, one of its
oldest and most respected citizens. He was
president of the Job n White Rank, (named
after him) and at the time of his death was
said to be worth about $400,000. Ho was a
strong Baptist and a short while before he
died signed a check donating $6,000 for the
erection of anew church in this city. It is
already in the course of construction and
will be called the John White memorial.
