Dal* Looking’ for a Bondsman—Sumby
Offers to Coma Back.
Atlanta, Ga. Dec. 7.—lt is reported
from Dallas, Ga., where Dale wes carried
last night for trial, that he waived exam
ination this morning. The magistrate fixed
bis bond at SBOO. It is doubtful whether
Dale will be able to give bad. He had not
succeeded this afternoon, but claimed that
be would.
A lengthy argument was made before
Judge Clark in chambers to-day for the
discharge of ex-Banker Tolleson from j&ii.
It was urged that Tolleson was illegally im
prisoned, as he had never been made a party
to a snit, and the court had no jurisdiction
over his person. Decision was reserved.
CROWDED DOCKETS.
At tbe meeting of the bar to-day Judge
Marshall Clark referred to the crowded
condition of the dockets, notwithstanding
the dispatch of business in the three courts
sitting in this county, aud urged the neces
sity of increased court facilities. The bar
agreed with the judge, aud the next legisla
ture will be asked to create anew court for
Fulton.
In November, 1888, K. P. Sumby (white),
who had a female barbershop here, was
sent to the penitentiary for stabbing a
bootblack. Last October Sumby escaped
and has turned up in Canada. Ha writes
from Toronto that he will come back volun
tarily if guaranteed an interview with the
governor to state his case before being put
back in stripes. He insists that he is a
greatly wronged man, that the sentence is
unjust, and that the governor will pardon
him as soon as he hears his story.
The governor has about determined upon
the trustees of the Girls’ Industrial School,
and will aunounce them Monday.
Judge Pardee held court here to-day, and
leaves for the southern district to-morrow.
W. J. Auderson of McConnell & Auder
seu, contractors , after collecting SBIO of
money due his firm, left town to-day. The
chief of police by request of his partner to
night telegraphed to various points for his
arrest.
TWO BULLETS IN HIS HEAD.
An Intoxicated White Man Shot by a
Negro at Boston.
Boston, Ga., Dec. 7.— John R. Hall, a
highly respected young man of this place,
was badly shot this evening, about 7:30
o’clock, by a negro named Lorenzo Payne,
at the latter’s house. Hall had been to
Tbomasville, and returned to Boston ou the
7 o'clock train. As ho was a little intoxi
cated, he wandered to Payue’s house aud
knocked for admission, first at the front
door and afterwards at the rear door, when
Payne, coming up. began abusing and firing
bis pistol at Hall. Hall was not armed,
and throwing up his hands, bogged
Payne not to shoot, assuring him
that nothing wrong was desired or
intended. Payne, however shot Hall
twice. Payne wars arrested aud jailed by
.Marshal Hight, and will be carried to
Tbomasville to-night as a precaution
against lynching. There is a good deal of
excitement but no violence is anticipated,
the marshal aud town authorities having
taken prompt measures to prevent it. Hall’s
condition is quite critical. One ball took
effect in the back of the head and the other
in the face near the left ear.

Brunswick Officers Think They Have
Solved a Mystery.
Brunswick, Ga., Dec. 7.—James Mc-
Donald and Charles Schootky (whits) were
arrested six miles from here this morning
for passing counterfeit money. After being
arrested they confessed to having the money
and carried the officers to a spot iu a neigh
boring woods, where they found 153 in
spurious coin and a valise containing
a lot of gunsmith’s tools a id a thick piece
of sole-ieather on which was cut circular
cavities corresponding with a silver dollar
and a dime. They were brought to the
city and lodged in the county jail. When
examined at the jail by the United Statos
commissioner they claimed that they got
the money from Robert Moran, owner of a
sloop now in port. A search warrant was
issued and the sloop was searched, but
nothing was found.
Commissioner Simmons thinks he has
tumbled on the gang of counterfeiters who
have been flooding Southern Georgia aud
Florida tor the past few months. A tele
gram was sent to District Attorney Irwin
at Macon for a special detective to ferret
out the mystery. The case will be tried
Monday morning.

Three Members of a Family Die From
Eating Poisoned Bacon.
Jacksonville, Fla., Dec. 7.—A pathetio
story comes from San Diego, near Pablo
beach. Last Tuesday night the whole
Myer family, after eating supper, com
plained of cramps in the stomach. The
pains were followed by vomiting. The next
day, Jane, the eldest daughter, aged 19
years, died. That night the next daughter,
Monnales, aged 15, died, and the next
morning the eldest son, Albert, aged
2 years, died. Physicians were sent for im
mediately when the sickness first broke out,
but owing to the distance of the Meyer
family in the woods, they arrived too late to
save those mentioned, although the balance
of the family are safe. It is believed that
the family ate poisoned bacon.

hen she had finished her speech the
woman adjusted her hat and Bounced
across to the other side of the room.
Stevens had listened intently to the woman,
and when she had finished he straightened
up from the chair, aud, looking out of his
good eye at the judge, said: “Yu’ heahs

COL. FRY’d NEW ROAD.
Engineers to Come to Savannah This
Week.
Events have shown that Col. Fry’s At
lantic, Atlanta and Western road is push
ing toward Savannah as fast as practical.
Col. Fry, inaletter to the Morning News,
says that Col. l’rahs, the engineer who rep
resents the syndicate of capitalists inter
ested iu the road, is revising and verifying
the estimates and profiles made under the
surveys already finished, and he ex.
presses himself as highly delighted
with the outlook for building tbe road.
He thinics that this road, when built, will
bo one of great importance to the state, and
will be altogether profitable to the stock
and bond holders. He has directed that
Col. Fry send Mr. W. T. B. Wilson, who
is to ba chief of Col. Fry’s engineering
staff, to make a careful revision of the line
from the Ocmulgee river by wayjof Monti
cello, thence to a point midway between
Monticello and Eatouton, intersecting tne
line as originally surveyed. Tnis will be
done at once. Several other important
changes are suggested by Col. Prahs.
Col. Prahs comes from Atlanta to the
seaboard, and will inspect Brunswick and
Savannah, and will visit all the principal
points all along the line, taking a bird’s-eye
view of the entire country preliminary to
the letting of contracts, which will be done
immediately.
BOUGHT BY THE EMPEROR.
The Last of Kaulbach’s Paintings Se
cured by Emperor Wilhelm.
Director Brandt, of the Telfair Academy
of Arts and Sciences, received a letter yes
terday from Munich, saying that Emperor
Wilaelm of Germany had telegraphed to
the widow of the great artist, Wilhelm
vouKaulbach: “I have just learned that
you wish to sell the original sepia cartoon,
‘The Battle of Salamis,’ painted by your
deceased husband. If the information is
correct, please consider the painting mine
and have it forwarded to me at Berlin.”
This picture is the last of the great artist’s
works for sale. Director Brandt was of
fered the picture when he was in Munich
f ,r 25,000 marks, which is probably the
price paid for it by the Emperor Wilhelm.
The picture is a monochrome about the
same hight as the “Peter Arbuea,” which
Mr. Brandt bought, but it is some longer.
The Telfair gallery is now in possession of a
work which undoubtedly would long ago
have been in the German imperial gallery
had the emperor known that it could have
been secured.
