ON THE CAROLINA. BIDE
Happenings in Charleston and in Ad
joining Sections.
The South Carolina railway has placed its
corps of workmen at work oa the Ashley
river extension.
The arguments of counsel in the case of
the United States against F. T. Hardee,
supervisor of registration for Beaufort
county, who was before United States com
missioner \V. N. Heyward, in Charleston,
last week, charged with neglect of duty in
failing to open his office in time for regis
tration of voters on April 7, and thereby
violating a statute of the United States con
cerning the election of a member of con
gress, will be submitted at the office of the
United States commissioner in Beaufort to
day.
The engineers in charge of the most im
portant survey undertaken on the South
Carolina coast since the war are now
actively at work in the Ashley river. Vari
ous attempts have been made to obtain
sufficient data on which to make a hydro
graphic chart of the beds of the Ashley and
Cooper rivers. As is well known, the har
bor is mnDped out already to a certain dis
tance up the rivers, but it is the object of
the government to make a continuous chart
from the bar up to the highest navigable
point in the river.
The News and Courier says: The largest
shipment Of truck this season was made
Tuesday night. The Atlantic Coast Line
dispatch forwarded thirty-four carloads of
vegetables and truck in two sections. The
South Carolina railway carried a large
consignment. The bulk of the shipments
last night was made up of cabbages and
potatoes, though a quantity of berries,
Leans, peas and asparagus was also shipped.
The potato crop is being rushed to the
northern market in advance of any other
offering. The asparagus season is very
nearly over as far as 'shipments are con
cerned. The Norfolk and North Carolina
truck farmers are now entering the market
with cabbages, und there is a consequent
fall in price of South Carolina cabbage.
But then the local cabbage raisers certainly
have nothing to complain of, os the ship
ments w hicn have already teen made have
all paid handsomely. Potatoes are being
shipped from Christ church parish. Young’s
Island, Toogadoo aud St. Andrew’s parish.
Both the South Carolina and Norths’.stern
railroads are doing a good truck business,
and are offering every facility for handling
the business offered them.
RAIL AND CROSSTIE.
The now railroad now building from Roan
oke, Va., to Sumter, 8. C., and known as
the Roanoke Southern, and which connects
with the Norfolk and Western at Roanoke,
will be one of the connections of the South
Bound railroad. Inquiries are being|made
in Jacksonville as to when the South Bound
is to be expected there. Parties there say
that if the road is not hurried up, the pro
posed railroad from Jacksonville toßranch
ville, S. C\. will be built, and Savannah
will he “left out in the cold.”
The Wall Street News says that John C.
Calhoun, while somewhat reticent, has con
veyed the impression that the report that
the Richmond and West Point Terminal
Company is about to absorb the Baltimore
and Ohio is very premature. From other
sources, however, it is learned that a most
important deal is on the tapis, and that at
the forthcoming meeting of the directors of
the Richmond and West Point Terminal
important negotiations will be completed,
which will give the road increased power,
as far as the southern situation is con
cerned.
~Tbe competition for the Washington
business continues to increase the speed of
trains. The Pennsylvania railroad an
nounces that after SI ay 11 the time of the
“Congressional limited” from New York to
Washington will be reduced to 5 hours and
5 minutes. The present time is 5 hours and
80 minutes. Allowing 13 minutes for the
ferry from New York to Jersey City, the
running time of the train is 4 hours and 52
minutes. The total distance from Jersey
City to Washington is 234.53 miles. The
6peod, including stops, will bo, therefore,
46.1 miles per hour. The Baltimore and
Ohio will also accelerate its 3:20 o’clock p.
m. train, reducing the time to 5 hours, the
distance being 225.3 miles. The speed, in
cluding stops, will be 48.6 miles per hour.
This will doubtless be the fastest train in
America for the distance, and it is doubtful
if another train can be found in the world
that runs 225 miles at this rate, including
stops.
Tue proposition that the voyage across
the Atlantic ocean may be reduced to about
1,700 miles, instead of the 3,052 miles of the
route between New York and Liverpool,
and that the time of the passage may be
reduced from about seven days to about
three days arid a half is immensely attrac
tive in the statement, although at first it
seems preposterous. A company has actu
ally been organized in Canada which pro
poses to thus shorten the time and distance
between the old and new world by
constructing a railway along the north
shore of the St. Lawrence river and gulf
from Quebec to St. Charles bay, on the
labrador coast, a distance of 844 miles, and
placing a line of fast steamers on the route
from St. Charles bay to Milford Haven,
u ales, where extensive harbor facilities
have for some time been awaiting traffic
which did not come. The southeast coast
of Labrador reaches far out into the ocean,
and a line drawn duo east shows the short
est possible route between the American
continent and the British Isles.
Savannah's Cleanliness.
From the Vienna ( Ga.) Vindicator.
One of our merchants remarked last week
after n trip to Savannah that there was
more filth around his back door than there
"as in the whole city which ho had just
visited. That remark led to our query.
" liy not clean it upf That is the trash in
our town. Not that we claim to be such a
well regulated city os Savannah, but that
it is as necessary for us as for them.

It ia of Ostrich Feathers and Must

Chicago Times' Washington Letter.
Next to an elegant dress a woman likes
best a handsome opera cloak. They repre
sent one of the most expensive articles of a
wardrobe, the material costing from $8 to
S3O per yard, but being of such width that
it only takes four or five yards. The least
expensive of them are $75, and one that
Miss Maria Leiter wears must have cost
SSOO. It is of white silk, and covers her
from throat to dress hem. It is the sim
plest thing in the world, and a thoughtless
man would offer his wife a $lO till to dupli
cate it. But if he should should see it
thrown back he would whistle the X to the
winds, for it is completely linod with the
fineet matched ostrioh lips that the Paris
cloakmaker could get by ordering them
direct from the ostrich farms. As the girl,
who is dark as Cleopatra, opens it to throw
it aside, one draws the breath at the poetic
effect.
Older ladies, as a rule, wear shorter
cloaks of the visite style, although Mrs.
Stephen J. Field, who is an authority on
dress, has a dark-blue velvet trimmed wilh
long-haired white fur that reaches to the
floor. Mrs. Harrison has a handsome short
cloak which she usually keeps on wheu at
the theater. It is of while imbossed
velvet, trimmed with white marabout
feathers. As she sat in a box with the
family of Secretary Noble one night she
looked positively superb, for the wrap was
thrown back, and har iron-gray hair was
dressed vory high and slightly "powdered.
Right opposite her in a box with the Blaines
was Mrs. Morton in a short wrap of blue
and gray cloth, lined with pale-pink silk.
CHIMNEYS.
One of the minor troubles
of house-keeping is the
breaking of lamp-chimneys.
Chimneys cost but little
