TALL lEASSEB TOPICS. Tk® Tour of the Railroad Commission —Railroads and Tobacco. Tallahassee, Fla.. May 16. During this month the members of the Florida railroad commission are to visit the offices of the different railways in the state for the purpose of impressing upon the officials the importance of posting the schedules, e :c , as required by the rules of Circular s; o \' 33. The Florida Central and Peninsular rail way officials are so well pleased with the i. creased business given to their road by the extensive operations of the tobacco syndicate at Quincy that they have ap pointed Henry J. Feu ten as tobacco agent. He Kill furnish any planter along the lino of read w ith choice seed Lee of charge, will visit any iarm not more than ten miles off from the r ad and poi sonally superintend at differe t times during tae season the j lant ing. cultivating, cutting, curing, ware fa using, stripping, packing and shipping of tobacco, or will give a y desire 1 advice when called upin, none of this to cos, the planter a cent, but all to be paid for by President H. Blanton to be jastice of the peace in and for Bradford county. Miss Helen X. Harrison of Xew Orleans, a niece of Prof. James Harrison of Wash ington and Lee University, has been visit ing her stepfather, Cjl. William Himes of the Florida railroad commission. NEGRO DEPUTIES. United States Marshal E. C. Weeks denies that he has aopointed negro deputies in the counties of Leon, Jefferson aud Gad-den, but notwithstanding his denial negroes con tinue coming in from different voting pre t-iucts in this county and asking their white democratic friends if Marshal Weeks ca i compel them to serve as deputies, stating that they i ad been notified that they would be called upon to serve. The marshal may not have appointed a single negro deputy, but from appearances he has put tags on quite a number, who have been given to understand that they must be ready too >me at his whistle. Marshal Weeks himself says that he has found no trouble in serving legal process in this county, aud has had no use for deputies. DISGRACEFUL WORK. Tuesday night some evil disposed or mischievous person or persous brick-batted the residence"of Mrs. G. D. Crafts, the lady who aided Marshal Weeks in arresting W. B. Schrod-r, an account of whica the Morning News gave some days ago. This is very much regi ettei by all good citizens of Tallahas ee. It was not merely a low, mean irick, but serves to give the Harrison ad ministration new sensational capital, and innocent parties will no doubt bo made to bear the bruut. Mayor Carpenter will do all in his power to unravel the case, and, if caught, the guilty parties will be punished to the fullest extent of the la w. GEOLOGICAL SPECIMENS. S. A. Robinson, a brother of the state chemist, has been appointed by the bureau of immigration aud agriculture to make a collection and arrange in cabinets all the interesting Florida geological specimens that he can find, one cabinet to go to each of the state institutions of education and one to be placed on exhibition in the office of the commissioner of agriculture, in the capitol. Prof. E. Dubois of the Tallahassee vine yard reports that he could sell 100 times as much of his wines as he can at present make, and dispose of every gallon of it at sfl, while California wines are a glut on the market at 40 cents. Tallahassee will be well prepared to care for opera companies next season. The new Opera House company will soon begin work on their $15,000 opera house, aud James Munro hus purchased the material to add SI,OOO in improvements to the present opera house. What will Simmoiu Liver Regulator do! Make you well by restoring action to the liver.— Adv. GEORGIA THRIFT. Horace M. Ellington has bought the El) i jay Courier. The building boom in Eiberton seems to have subsided to some extent. George F. Work of Philadelphia will build five more miles of street railways at Macou and increase the supply of electricity. One hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars has been put into or contracted to be put into new buildings—business houses aud residences —at Dalton during the pres ent year. Mrs. Belle Brown will begin shortly the erection of a handsome two-story seven room residence on her lot on Jackson street, Amerieus. In Bibb superior court M. Nussbaum & Cos. and A. Glbiun & Cos. have filed a petition for foreclosure of mortgage vs James A. Tidwell. The new acid phosphate companv organ ized at Maco \ J. I\ Brown president, has received application for £ 10.U0O of stock more than can be at present accommodated. Tho wholesale grocery firms of Glover & Lanier aud P. C. Clegg & Cos. of Amerieus will bo incorporated as the Amerieus Grocery Company. The new incorporation will begin business on Monday. A brick manufacturer of Macon says it is possible that, the price of brick will ad vance to ?8 and *9 per I,OOU, owing to a scarcity of wood with which to burn the brick. This manufacturer, who consumes about 20,000 cords of wood per annum, says it is well nigh impossible for him to get wood nt all. He has recently been down the line of two railways to get a sup ply, but was unsuccessful. Griffin Call: The banking capital of Griffin has m re than quardrupied itself during the last decade. The grand total is ?4T1,311 IS for ISID, ugainst $118,492 for 1880. In 1889 the tax returns for the city amounted to $8.50,000. The returns just made foot up $991,000, showing a clear in crease in one year cf $141,000. One hun dred and twenty-five thousand dollars of this increase is upon new property, such as buildings, etc. The electric plant at the Brunswick Ice and Brewing Company’s works was started Thursday night. The putting in of the machinery and the hangiug of the lamps was completed several weeks ago. The beer bottling works were also started Thurs day. Fifteen one-hair kegs ef beer were bottled and the machinery worked perfectly. As scon as the cold storage and ice ma chinery is completed the whole plant will be put in operation. Athens Banner: Orr & Hunter have five teams at work hauling the machinery from the old Skull shoals factory to the Athens foundry, where what is serviceable of it is remod-led and the rest torn up and sold as old iron. There is a great deal of it, ar.d the wagons will tequire about three nionths to complete the hauling. Their operatives’ houses are all going to wreck very fast, and if something is not soon done this valuable property and fine water power will be in 1 uins. Cotton Around Chattahoochee. Chattahoochee, Fla., May 16.—The cotton crop in this locality is almost a total loss, owing to the heavy deluge of rain that has fallen here during the past week. As soon as the soil has dried the farmers will replant. GEORGIA POLITICS. Samuel Small has entered the legislative race in Fulton county. Hon. Walter B. Hill of Macon denies that i he will run for congress? A called meeting of Houston county dem ocratic executive cjinmitteo will be held at Perry to-day. The friends of Me j. W. M. Boyd have about got his consent to offer for the legis lature at the next election. There will probably be a half dozen can didates for clerk of Clai ke superior court. The offioe pays about SI,BOO a year. The friends of Hon. R. W. E erett are urgi g him to enter the race for congress in the Seventh district, and it is thought that they may prevail upon him to do so. R. Y. H. O’She .1 and J. R. LeCroy are candidates foe tax receiver in Franklin county. G. W. Carroll. R. M. Walters and W. F. Bowers want to be tax collectors, and J. B. D. McWhorter aspires to tho shriev alty. Coroner L. B. Davis of Glynn countv has tendered his resignation. It is probable that an election will be called immediately to fill the vacancy. Several appl cations for tho office have already bec-n filed at the court house. The farmers’ alliance had a celebration at Dawsonville Thursday. It is supposed that, 3.00 J people were on the ground. Speeches we e made by Col. Winn of Gwinnett county; Col. Farrow of Lumpkin county; Thad Pickett of Cherokee county and George Singleton of Sou:h Carolina. Eiberton Gazette: The alliance of this cou ,ty held a very full and interesting meeting here.on the first Tuesday and re quested the executive committee of the Democratic party to call a mass meeting at an early day to decide whether or not primary elections shall be held to nomi nate candidates for tie various offices which are to be filled nex fall. They also decided that in the meantime the different sub-alliances in tne county shall hold meet ings to express their preference as to candi dates, which expression will be brought befo e sad mass meeting, if called. Ti.e meeting also adopted the platform of the general alliance, except the educational plank therein. GEORGIA SMIn.ES, It is said that the Pickett running for congress in the Xinth district has never been on the fence. Georgia’s weekly editors are kicking be cause the tariff bill has reached the point where it imposes a tax on their minds. In view of the fact that the circus season will soon open in the state we rise to remark that circus lemonade is seldom worth a straw. An Indian missionary named Star is preaching in the state. It is said that he is well-fitted by early training to suatch sin baldheaded. Adairsville has a new paper called the Daily Goat. It will doubtless have a fine time nibbling on the tid bits to be found in the field of journalism. The drummers having been the lions of the hour for a couple of weeks, tne secret soc.cty men are now taking a tour. Tne two classes are something unite —each has its grip, you know. The Adairsville Ledger warns its readers to look, out for something to drop that w iil redound to Adairsville’s advantage. Some thing more than a drop in the bucket may therefore be expected. The projectors of the fund to buy an ele phant for Grant park at Atlanta have already succeeded in getting a white ele p ant on their Bands, i’he Atlanta Jour nal’s fund, however, seems to be the lion of the hour. “Uncle Billy” McElroy of Lawrenceville has come to the front with a singular and mysterious chicken, which has a very strange form. The fowl has four distinct and separate legs, with four feet, one toe on each foot, aqd in addition to that it has two heads, one in front and one behind. The freak will doubtless work up a big stew in the local boarding house. Unless more care is given to the hair, the coming man is liable to be a hairless ani mal; hence to prevent the hair from falling use Hall’s Hair Rauewer.— Adv. BLACK UNDERWEAR FOR MEN. The Latest Fashionable Fad For Swell Clubman. From Chatter. Up to a very few weeks ago the idea of men wearing solid black underwear would have been regard- and as preposterous. Ow ing to the caprices of swelldom, however, there is no telling a month ahead just what may happen, and in the matter of dress men are just as fantastic and quite as ephemeral aud vain as women possibly can be. Asa matter of fact, black underwear is now the rage among a lot of young club men who may be said to set the pace for ail New York and the rest of the country in extreme fashions. The garments in ques tion, which are, of course, of pure silk, in clude tne undershirt, drawers, nig it-shirt, haif hose, suspenders, garters and sleeve straps. There are also black silk neglige shirts for the sea-shore. Tho reason given for re sorting to black underclothes is that black brings out the lines of the human figure ts better advantage than any other color. CI7TICURA REMEDIES.
