Notes and Gossip.
John Clarkson Is nearly in condition to
o into the box again. Next weok will see
f m ail right.
Billy Nash is hitting with gratifying reg
urity. He batted safely in sixteen
raight games. He has failed to hit safely
i only two games.
The Brooklyn League and Players’ teams
sipped at the Continental hotel at Phila
dphia together and fraternized continu
al*. The bitter spirit of the magnates is
ni shared by the players; instead, most of
tb league players are at heart deeply in
syipatby with the Players’ League.
Fed Dunlap was paid off and released by
the-’ittsburg club Friday morning.
A*umor prevails that Fogarty contem
plate entering the Philadelphia league
team Under the decision In the Pickett
case uch a step would be impossible, even
if Fgarty contemplated it, which we
doubt, without a release from the players’
club. r udge Arnold has stopped contract
jumpiis; pretty effectually.
Shinfie’s tatting has been immense, and
he protibly comes pretty near to leading
the Pliyers’League.
Shamon ii the only man on the Phila
delphiaPlavtrs’ Club that does any coach
ing, an! tha; doesn’t amount to anything,
being ofthe senseless loud-mouthed associa
tion kina
Louisville istrying to buy first baseman
Virtue from Detroit.
Von del Ab now sits on the bench with
his players am makes it hot for them.
Cincinnatian think that Dunlap is no
longer "in it" with McPhee as a second
baseman.
Anson isn’t batting anything like up to
his old form. Has he used himself up in
training bis cilts?
Cincinnati’s infield is very unsteady, and
the boys do n)t pull together as they should.
Earie has eught on in St. Louis, and is
now Von dei Abe’s most reliable catcher.
It is repoted that Chicago is to release
and Omaha sgn Catcher Tom Nagle.
Bob Ferguaa is g.ving general satisfac
tion in his uupiring this season.
George Tehtiu is doing as well for Toledo
as he ever didfor Cincinnati.
Glasscock aid Denny have not set New
York afire os ret.
The Pi tsbtfg League Club has recon
sidered Paul [lines’ release and will give
him a trial in he outfield.
No wonder A. G. Bpalding thinks base
ball is declinbg. His club played before
153 people Tuetday.
Tom Daly isproving bis value to Brook
lyn. He is caching better than ever be
fore, and that is saying a great deal.
“Homo Rurf’ Duffee may never play ball
again. A disease that has rendered him
powerless vetoei his worth.
Of the flfteei games lost by Manager
Kennedy’s Brooklyn team eight have been
lost by one run Hard luck.
Old “Doug” Allison, once a star catcher
of the famous Cincinnati Red Stockings, is
employed at the national museum at Wash
ington at a stipend of $730 per annum.
A good deal of praise has been lavished
on Anson’s second baseman, O’Brien, and
yet we find the “old man” playing his
catchers in O’Brien’s position very often,
indeed.
The Koefe family of pitchers—of Now
York, Buffalo and Syracuse—ire all doing
well. Must ho something in the name.
No less than three O’Briens are playing
second base—one for Washington, one for
Chicago and one for Rochester.
Judging from pitcher Rhines’ work to
date he is a diamond ornament of the first
water, and no “rhine-stone.”
If the rain continues much longer both
teams will be playing off postponed games
way beyond Christmas.
Comiskey’s new racket is* to walk up to
the umpire and say: “Mr. Jones, don’t
think I’m kicking. I only want to request
you to endeavor to use more discretion in
the matter of balls and strikes. That’s all. ”
Then the umpire faints.
Director O’Neil admits that the Pittsburg
club has already lost $13,000, but insists
that the club will stick it out at any cost.
If the present ratio of loss' is maintained
this one club will lose $65,000 on the season
in order to help the National League save its
dignity*.
National League officials should compare
notes before talking for publication. Direc
tor Palmer O’Neil says there was no meet
ing in New York and he saw no league
magnates while in that city. Day, Spald
ing and Byrne acknowledge that there was
just an informal conference.
“Count” Campau was made the recipient
of a brake wheel of flowers by his late fel
lowemployes of the Michigan Central as he
stepped to bat in the opening game at De
troit Monday.
A correspondent of the Sporting Life
from Mobile, Ala., writes: In my last
letter mention was made of the possibility
of reorganizing tho old Southern League.
Since then matters have tiken such a turn
that what then w as a possibility has become
a certainty. At Birmingham, the Southern
League was reorganized, with the following
cities comprising the circuit: Mobile, Bir
mingham, Selma, Anniston, Now Orleans,
Macon, Ga., Columbus, Ga, and Pensacola,
Pia The above is a little different from what
I wrote you in my last. Macon has been
substituted for Montgomery and Chatta
nooga has been dropped for Pensacola. J.
Howell Kent of Birmingham is president.
The salary limit will be SOOO per month,
which, while not a large one, is enough to
give us a very good club, if care is exercised
■h the selection of teams. While
the circuit is not as strong as one
Wo ’ l H wish, yet it is better than none at all,
and I trust it will only be the forerunner of
a stronger one. The men backing our end
of the line are Messrs. John B. Cbamber
'Tal,n > Robert H. Mauser, Jack Norvilie and
Johnny Kelly. To tho last named gentle
man is indebted the honor of carrying the
project through to a successful termination,
l here is no reason in the world why our
organization, run on an economical basis,
should not succeed well. I can speak for
our end of the line. As I have said many*
times, there is not a better ball city in the
whole south than Mobile, and give us a goo 1
team and we will demonstrate that fact.
1 do not know who will manage our team,
but I suppose it will be either Johnnv Kelly
or Jack Norvilie. Either will do.
As they intend to play the first game on
June 1, some tall hustling will have to be
done to be in readiness by that tima
Ihe schedule commit too is booked to meet
iu Selma, Ala., May 26.

as at “The famous," and besides the low
est prices I give this week a straw hat with
every suit for a present. 148 Broughton

Every one should use P. P. p., because at this

In the first place I must caution ail who
take my pills to abstain from all intoxicating
drinks, or they will not do much good. But
should any one be laboring under the influ
ence of drink, let him be ever so ill or his
head ever so bad, I would advbe him to
take six or eight of my pills at bed time,
and he will be all right the following morn
ing. It may appear to many that the dose
here recommended is too large, tut I would
remind invalids that except the pills be
taken in proper doses they will do no good,
and experience will teach all who use them
that the doses hero recommended, instead
of being too large, are, in many obstinate
and severe cases, cot large enough, and
many strong persons, in very sudden and
obstinate disorders, will derive benefit in a
few minutes after the first dose by taking a
larger dose than here mentioned.
These excellent Dills era composed en

Charley—Oh, that’s easily enough disposed

caught on to the trouble one day and got rid of
it in no time.
George— What was it?
Charley—Bimply blood eruptions. Took a
