Inquiries made at a large Fourth street
jewelry house developed same interesting

jeweled clasps for garters, rather, in stock
we e found only silver clasps of various
designs, ranging in price from $5 to 414,
but the young lady in charge said that they

A cheerful assent to this proposition being

came up with a red silk baud to which was
attached a handsome solid silver clasp with

Ascending in the scale of the toilet, at the

At the madame’s, on Race, this moraine,
found a lovely and bewildering array

gracefully curved and indented brim was
faced with the salmon color, the outside of

over this was rich black applique, the points
extending just under the brim and tacked

There is absolutely no crown; one tiny

A rece it pretty fashion of decorating an
English table was the idea of pLc.ng on the
table five high silver lamps, with pink tu le
plaited shades, looking like upturned tulips.
One la up was placed at each square corner
and one in the center. Between these were
hung pale groan silken net hammocks, or
pale yellow or violet, and th-so were loaded
w.th rare cut flowers, just thrown in, half
foll.ng and still fragrant from the wet
lyeopod moss sheltering their stems. The
effect is charming, and as the slightest
touch makes these cradles rock, the tier
fume is delicious and cooL Another idea
w,is to fill iu the table with small crystal,
s lver mounted dishes, containing one bunch
of grapes, or one peach, or a dozen acid
strawberries, or a half dozen raspberries,
melting in chablis. Every one can pick bis
or her favorite fruit and avoid the cumber

The present style in hairdressing inclines
to greater simplicity aud more apparent
naturalness, and there is an effort io pre
serve the character and contour of the
head. Three puffs irreg :1a ly arranged
from the ends of the hair that is twisted on
top of the head are 'beriming, easily ar
ranged without the assistance of a maid or
hairdresser, aid seem especially suite! to
brown or black tresses, which en passant
need greater richness of ar angement than
blonde or silvery hair. Crepe or fluffy ef
fects are being adapted to blonde or gol ion
hair, while the pompadour roll is the most
dignified and stately fashion yet invented
for gray hair.

How the Peddler Got Even.
He rang the bell of a Laursl avenue resi
dence and on the appearance of the servant
begged to be presented to the lady of the
house, says the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
“But she has no use for peddlers,” replied
the girl.
“1 was recomeuded to call here by a
prominent society lady a few bloc s below,
and—Oh, yes," as tue matron of tne house
hold appeared to reinforce the servant,
“allow me to call your attention to one of
the most ingenious inventions of the age.”
“What is it?” inquired the lady.
“It is a patent reversible doormat. You
will observe, madam, that it contains two
slides, the one reading ‘Welcome,’ the other
‘Not at Home.’ Now, then, these slides are
worked by two cords extending into th <
front room. The trap can be set, or in other
words, the mat can be arranged tc display
the word‘Welcome’on such days as yon
are prenarod to receive company, and at
such times us you are indisDosed, or other
wise engaged, the words ‘Not at Home’ can
be made to staro the would-be caller in the
face at your own convenience. I have al
ready sold quite a number of them on the
avenue.”
“Iwouldn’t havejsuch a thing around the
house. ”
“You wouldn’t?’
“No, sir. It’s a gross innovation and I
should consider it also a gross impropriety.
Take it away.”
“But, madam, quite a number of vour
neighbors have already secured them and
they are bound Jto become quite a fad, I as
sure you.”
“Take it away.”
“Remonstrance is useless?”
“Quite so.”
“Be careful, madam, or you will compel
me to make a confession.”
“That is entirely unnecessary. Just take
yourself aud your mats away, and it will
be all right.”
“Madam, you defy me. All right, then.
Your neighbor right across the street just
purchased one and said that she had but one
reason for doing so.”
“And what was that?”
“She said, mentioning your name, that
she wanted just such a mat on the front
steps that she could use to keep you from
running in every hour or two to gad and
gossip about your betters. Good day,
madam, I really think you should have just
such a mat os this in self-defense.”

About eight years ago I wrote you from
WUkesbarre, Pa., descriolag how your wonder
ful remedies completely ourrd me of a terrible
case of eczema or salt rheum. I must now tell
you what Cuticura Remedies have a*rain done
tfor me. On the 22d of last
September I had the misfor
tune to bruise my leg, and I
put a piece of sticking plaster
on it. inside of a week I had
& terrible leg. My wife be
came frightened and advised
me to go to a surgeon. X
went, and doctored for two
months, but no good was
done me, besides costing me
big money. My leg had by
this time formed into an
ulcer, and got worse every
day I could not stand it
any longer', and made up my
ramd to go to a hospital and
see if I could be helped. I wont to several here
in tbe city, in turn, but none could do me any
food. I had a terrible leg, with a hole in it as
ig as a dollar, and pam that almost set me
crazy. I got scared about it, and determined
to try Ccticcr.v Remedies. 1 obtained a set,
and inside of five weeks iny leg was healed up
as well as It ever was. except the terrible scar
it left for a reminder of what was once a terri
ble sore leg. These Remedibs are worth their
weight in gold. JOHN THIEL.
