WE SELT REPORT.
OFFICE MORN IMI SEWS, I
Savannah. Dec 5. 1890. (
Several Remarks.—The tendency of the
npr i market during the past week was to
ward qoietneea. Matters are again in an un
,a;isfa' tory slate, caused by the unsettled eon
faun of the financial market. Sterling ex
change has for the best part of the week been
- .liable, which was refleeted in the slow busi
es doing in the cotton markot; added to this
■ M continued stringency of the local money
market, which has lsn a bar to activity in
pretty nearly ail branches of trade. The
O eatber has been cooler and more favorable for
i liberal business in the jobbing trades, and
while. In some departments, there was a littie
movement. In others the demand has slowed up
■onsiderably, and rather earlier than is usual
for this time of the year. There was a
good, steady demand in the wholesale grocery
trade, but the movement has beeD confined
principally to holiday goods. In dry goods
tbere was only a slow business in progress.
The hardware business was fair. The demand
in the lumber trade seems to improve, and
rit-goes are moving out steadily, both on
domestic and foreign order*. In other branches
hrre is little or no Improvement, although
there is a steady demand it is mostly in a small
wav. The course of prices has bee-1 rat her in
buyers’ favor, particularly in the food products,
which have declined. Collections are unsati,
factory and there is a steady complaint of a
varelfy of money in the interior, which is
attributed to recent financial disturbances. The
following resume of the week's business will
show the tone and the latest closing quotations
„f the different markets to day:
Naval Storks.—The market for spirits tur
ner-tine was fairly steady during the past week,
under very heavy receipts. There was a fair
inquiry, with steady offerings, and buyers man
aged to absorb a good amount of stock
at a slight concession. The market
Hosed to-day firm at 86c for regulars. The total
sales for the week were fully 2,500 casks.
Uosin The market was rirregular during last
week but for the most part easier, and prices
declined, although there was a partial recovery
io dav for the lower grades, closing firm, while
oales were only steady. There was a good in
quiry freely met, and about 12,000
barrels changed hands during the week.
In another column will be found
a weekly comparative table of receipts and ex
u-irts from April 1 to date, and for a like period
last year, showing the stock on hand and
ou shipboard not cleared, together with the
official closing quotations.
Cottos.—Business in the spot market was
somewhat restricted bv the unsettled condition
.if foreign exchange, as well as a chronic tight
ness of money. The market ruled compara
tively quiet throughout the week, and prices,
eadng to the stringency, were easy, a few hold
ers being compelled to make concessions to
effect sales, while the larger factors held
nfeadilv as rule for current quotations,
especially the better qualities. The demand,
however, was rather slow and indifferent. The
total of transactions for the week foot up 0,275
bales The market closed to-day quiet at the
following official spot quotations of the Cot
ton Exchange:
Bood middling 9%
Middling 84(1
Low middling 8
Good ordinary 1%
Ordinary o*4
Sea Bland*— I The receipts by factors
for the week up to 4 p. m were
1,811 bags and 171 hags of through
cottons. The exports were 8,1110 bags,dißtribuced
as follow s: To Liverpool 8,824 bags, to northern
mills 886 bags. The total sales were 1,888 bags.
The week opened with factors firm holders at
quotations, but the nominal condition of
foreign exchange caused the market, to rule
rather irregular while the takings for the week
were not in proportion to the large receipts,
and has caused the stock to accumulate some
what. The market tdosed quiet and easier,
though not quotably lower:

Rice-The market was very quiet during
be week except for the past two days. when
fea good demand set in. The offering stock is
ta.r, but as la usual operators are limiting their
akings owing to the holiday season uear at
band. Prices as a rule were slightly easier and
wer for the poorer qualities. The re
nr.ms are very light and all indications point to
