The Streets Pu l of Shoppers Buying'
Holiday Oi'.ts.
Yesterday was rather a quiet day for the
last 3 iturdav baforo Chrhtiuav. There
were not so uiaay people on the streets dur
ing ibe morning, an J not more thin tne
usual Saturday crowd was on the sense's in
the afternoon. The people seem to hare
money, bo-vever, and toe retail stores did a
business.
The big trade, of course, was in Christ
mas goods, although there are three days of
next week in which those articles can be
purchased before Dec. 25.
Many of the shoppers were purchasing
remembrances for friends at a distance,
which will require some time in transit.
The trade of the sweethearts, especially of
the masculine variety, was very valuable to
the Jewelers and the dealers in plush goods
and other elegant nonsense. Thousand! of
dollars were taken in in exchange for re
membrances for dear ones, to be hidden
away until the morning of the happy day.
The postoffice and tho express company
always have a rush during tho week pre
ceding Chri tmas. The usuai number of
packages is doubled, trebled and eve quad
rupled, and the mails are made the recepta
cles for odd and mysterious looki g pack
ages of all weights and sizes. A
Morning News reporter who
dropped into tho pos: office yesterdiy
during the busy hours found the moueV
order clerk making out orders as fast as lie
could write them, with a string of people
waiting at the window to be ser red us t..e:r
turn came. Tho money was going f>r
Christmas presents chiefly. The registry
clerk was in a rush also, and the stamp sales
were very heavy.
Agent Cooper says it seems to bo all
the go for everybody in this part
of the country to send their frie ids
elsewhere boxes of orange*. Everyone
that goes to Florida, he says, thinks it is the
proper thing to compUnie.it his friends up
the country with a box of oruuges or grapo
fruit. Thousands of b ixc ad half boxes
of oranges are going through here by ex
press now. The u imhwr of packages by ex
press is also largely increased, especially of
valuable article-.
The Morning News reporter took a tour
through toe market to see how the Christ
mas supply was. Inspector Desvergers was
on hand, and said that the supply of meats
is large and very line. Some vorv fine culd
storage beef had just been placed upon tho
marker, he said. One carload was par
ticularly fine. He didu’t know but what the
cold storage company might be <1 ing this for
an advertisement, though. He also pointed
out some very flue Chatnam county rais.d
beef at the stall of C. T. Cooper. This beef
was fattened in the pea iield. Mr. Cooper
planted fifry acres in peas this summer, and
when he got ready to fatten his cattle he just
turned them right in on it. Epicures pie
fer beef fattened in this manner to the
western beef, as the flesh is finer grei ed.
The suppiy of Ash ou the market is small
but fine. There are s imo young shad from
the St. Johns river, Florida, sa trout,
speckled trout, and a ki.id ol hybrid trout
which is believed to be a cross between tho
salt water and the fresh water trout, a few
black fish and other more common varie
ties.
There is some game on the market, par
tridges, doves and ducks, but not in any
quantity, tho game being nearly all taken
by the hotels and restaurants, which con
sumo large quantities now. A 'few wood
cock were oilered at 75 cent! per pair.
The usual wiuier supply of vegetables is
on tho market, onto,is, turnips, radishes,
caunfl ;wer and spinach, but the supply wa .
not very large nor was tueie muc.i variety.
Christinai day will be observed as a holi
day, as usual, i tho city.
The public offices will be closed. P ost
master Doyle says he wishes tho employes
of the postofficj to have as much of a holi
day as possible, and for taut reason the
postotlice will be closed after 10 o’clock in
the morning for the day. Tne usual in rn
ing deliveries and collections will be made
previous to that hour.
low rates for the holidays.
Crowds of People Taking Advantage
of the Cheap Travel.
The holiday rates oa the railroads went
into effect yesterday.
The Central railroad is selling round
trip excursion rates to and from all stations
on its lines nod branches at the rate of 4
cents per mile for the round trip, or 2 cento
a mile each wa., children at half rates.
It is also selling tickets at the same rates to
all tbrougii points reached by the Central.
Thp tickets will be sold fr in Dec. 20 to
Deo. 25, inclusive, good to return on and
until Jan. 2. The Central will also sell
ticketß at the same rates Dec. 29 and Dec.
31. inclu ive, good to return on nnd until
Jan. 5. Single trip tickets will not be sold
at the-e rates. Tickets must be purchased
during ageuts’ hours, ns conductors are not
authorized to < bserve the excursion ra.es.
The 8a a mah, Florida &. Western and
Charleston & Savannah Railways arc sail
ing tickets from all points on their lines at a
lit le more th&u one fare for the round trip.
Tickets from Savannah to Charleston and
return are sold at one fare lor the round
trip. Tickets will be sold from yesterday
to Dec. 25 inciu-ive, good to return up
to and including Jan. 2, and on sale at
the satnera.es Dec. 21) an 131, incisive,
good to re uru up to and i .eluding Jan. 5.
These rates will bring thousands of peo
ple into the city to do their Chri-tmas
shopping. They are taken advantage of
generally by parties desiring to corns into
the city about Cnristmas time and a.soby
numbers of pe pie to visit friends and rela
tives along the route. Many people will
leave the city to spend the holidays, or a
portion of taem, with friends in the coun
try.
The excursion of the Central railroad
stockholders will bring more people to the
city, who are not in the habit of coming
here regularly, be. wee 1 now and Cnnstmas
than any other inducement offered. Stock
holde sand their families are passed free
over the road from yesterday co D o. 2o to
Savannah, and are passed free returning
from Deo. 2d to 27. This always
brings a crowd. Every ody within 100
miles of Savannah who can lav any claim
to a stock certificate is sure to come. Many
people hold a share or two of Central stock
just for thi excursion. The only trouble is
that there is no. enough of it held in the
country to accommodate all the people who
would like to come.
Eliot Arnold's Assault.
Eliot Arnold, a brief acc unt of whose
stabbing in St. Augustine, Fla., was given
in the Morning News some days ago, is a
nephew of Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Johnston of
this city. Young Arnold’s family has a
large connection here. Arnold was stabbed
and beaten by a negro after
taking a stranger’s part in a dispuce.
A letter to Dr. Johnston says Arnold was
riding his bicycle in the street a id passed a
white man in an altercation with a negro.
He told the man to get bent and his bicycle,
ns the negro had drawn a knife. He did so,
'the negro walked off, hut returned an t

A signal service
to weak womankind is the finding
of lost health—the building-up of
“a run-down” system. Nothing
does it so surely as Dr. Pierce’s
Favorite Prescription. It cures
all the derangements, irregulari
ties and weaknesses peculiar to
the sex. It’s the most perfect of
strength - givers, imparting tone
and vigor to the whole system.
For overworked, debilitated teach
ers, milliners, seamstresses, “ shop
girls,” nursing mothers, and fee
ble women generally, it is the
greatest earthly boon, being une
qualed as an appetizing cordial
and restorative tonic.
“Favorite Prescription” gives
satisfaction in every case, or
money paid for it is promptly
refunded. That’s the way it’s
sold; that’s the way its makers
prove their faith in it. Contains
no alcohol to inebriate ; no syrup
or sugar to derange digestion ;
a legitimate medicine , not a bev
erage. Purely vegetable and per
fectly harmless in any condition
of the system. World’s Dispen
