President George R Mcßee ef the Geor
gia Melon Growers’ Association has ca.leda
meeting of the melon growers of Georgia at
Albany on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
The rebate on tobacco in store in Macon
on Jan. 1 last will amount to between $6,000
and $7,00u. This, at the rate of 2 oents per
pound, represents a considerable amount of
the weed in store.
The wife of Turner Robinson, the negro
who murdered bis child and threw her
body in a pond near Albany, has been ar
rested on a warrant charging her with com
plicity in the crime.
At Adairsville Monday night the so-called
“Klu Klux” caught Charlie Giliahead
(colored), who had made himself obnoxious
by cursmg and being impudent to white
people, and thrashed him soundly.
There Is one geutleman in Nswnan who
evidently doe* uot consider marriage a fail
ure. He was married about ten years ago,
and on each Christmas morning since he
has presented the minister who officiated at
the ceremony with a $lO gold piece.

feeding the Job press Tuesday, when bis
right band was caught betweeu toe two
faces of the press, and all the fingers were
so badly mashed that amputation will have
to follow.
Mrs. Ora McKee, the fair prisoner of
Rome, is still in Floyd coun y jail. By the
advice of her attorney, Judge Brauham,
she now refuses to see any out except her
relatives and a few ot her intimate friends.
Her trial, on a charge of murder by poison
ing. has beon set for the first Monday in
March.
A cyclone 'one hundred yards wide
passed near Trenton Monday afternoon
from west to east, sweeping everything in
ita path. Mr. 8. B. Austin’s barn and
house were completely demolished. Mr.
Austin was siok and unable to get out of
bed, shelter being erected over his bed by
neighbors.
At Hinesville Saturday John A. Stewart
white, charged with the killing of Sambo
Jackson (colored) by hitting him with a
brick, under*eut a prelimieary examina
tion before Justioe F. M. Hughes and was
bound over to the May term ot the superior
court, in the sum of sl,ood, tor manslaugh
ter. Stewart gave bond and is now at lib
erty.
At Augusta Wednesday Coroner Pfcquet
was called upon to hold au inquest over
Willi* Tomliu, a four-months-old white
baby, found dead in bel between mother
and father this morning, at 136 Grace
street. The father and mother were both
confined to bed with measles, and with four
children all huddled up together in two
small rooms. It is a horrible case of desti
tution. The infant died from congostiou of
the lungs.
The Dublin People calls the attention of
Agricultural Commissioner Nesbitt to the
tea plants growing in the front yard ot
Richard A. Odom at Condor, Laurens
county. Mr. Odem got the plants from the
Uuited States department of agriculture
and set them out in 1880. Though they
"have had little care or protection, they
yield an abundance of leaves, supplying
Mr. Odom’s family with a beverage of ex
cellent quality.
Washington Foy will suffer a severe
financial loss from the fire which oocurred
on his place in Effingham county a few
days ago. His barns, stables, cotton house
and one or more buggies and harness, all
his farming implements, 800 bushels of corn,
eight bales of cotton aud several small
buildings around his lot were destroyed.
The fire is supposed to have been the w ,rk
of au incendiary. Mr. Foy estimates hi*
loss at $2,000.
Fourteen days ago Rufus Gray and Bawn
Wiß.es started from Tweed to Darien with
a large raft of timber. Generally from
this point the hands make th* trip in eight
days, providing no accident occu s.
Messrs. Gray and Wilkes are now seven
days behind time, and it is feared something
wrong has befallcu them. It is conjectured
that, having Bold their timber, they may
have left Darien aud been waylaid and
robbed. AU kinds of rumors are'afloat.
During tbe performance of tho fifth act
of the “Two Orphans” Tuesday night at
the Academy of Music at Macon a colored
woman in the gallery caused a sensation by
dropping from her teat as if dead. It was
during the dueling scene, and the woman
became so wrought up with excitement that
she tell inti a dead faint. She was carried
into the ticket room and efforts were made
to restore her to consciousness. When she
revived she had several convulsions, but
was finally able to get up ana walk to a
back, in which she was token to her home
on the hill.
Baxley Banner: Oh Fridav night last a
man, Wheeler by name, while sleeping in
the woods near Surrency, had his head split
nearly open by a falling tree. It seems
that he and a companion had lain down
and gone to sleep near where some brush
had bqen burning. During the night a tree
whioh had caught burned down and ssruck
one of them before he had time to get sway,
A freight train brought him up to Baxley,
where Dr. Weaver sewed up and dressed
the wound, which was a terrible gash six
or seven inches in length, and extended
from the middle of his head to just abort
the right eye. The wound is now doing
well.
Augusta Herald: AU graduates of the
Virginia military Institute supply them
selves with class rings as souvenirs. Each
is inscribed on the iuner side with the class
standing of the wearer. A. J. Twiggs of
this city, a popular lieutenant of the Rioh
roond Hussars, is a graduate of the institute.
On leaving the scheol he got one of these
souvenirs. It was a black seal ring, aud the
inscription denoted that Mr. Twiggs was
senior captain and received the hener of his
cl “- For the memories attached to it he
would not have parted with .the ring for
anything. Twelve years age it disap
peared (very mysteriously. Mr. Twiggs was
T ff7, c< T n ** grieved over the loss, but
aU his inquiries and isvestlgatioos availed
nothing. No trace of the trinket oould be
found and he up the search in desp&i-.
But now eomes the wonderful part of story.
The ring has just been returned to Mr*
Twiggs and through tbe mail. No state
ment accompanied it, nor was there any
way by which tbe sender cou.d be located,
or the place from whence it came.
FLORIDA.
Mrs. Georgisnna H. Parsons has bought
CoL Harper’s orange grove near Orange
City.
Keuka has ripe Japan plums, lime trees
in bloom, and the peach crop promisee to be
a good one.
Strawberries will soon be plentiful at
Psistko. One planter near town will ship
100 quarts this week.
The Ocala Water Company’* artesian
well is down I,2K> feet and iu clay, but tbe
work of (inking it deeper will cease until
piping arrives to curb that portion of the
work.
At Tampa Tuesday afternoon two oolored
boys were out m a boat fishing back of tbe
reservation, when, by tome means tbe b at
was capsized and one of the boys, Mat
Morris, was drowned.
F. E. Harris, editor and proprietor of the
Ocala Banner, has sold tiio north half of
the Banner block to Rev. Mr. Poage of
Tallahassee a farmer pastor of Ocala, but
quite recently of Orlaudo.
Fendandina boasts of one of the fastest
Florida bred ponies in the state. This lit
tle animal stands only four feet in bight,
but manages to get over a mile of Feruan
dina road in about 2:45.
During the past year Puuta Gorda has
shipped through her port 7,150 barrels of
ioed fish, 399,000 pound* ot salt fish. 2,389
head of cattle, 10,094 boxes of oranges, and
13,480 tons of phosphate.
The saw-mill firm of Morrow & Shatter
at Cedar Swamp, ou the Jocksouville and
Atlantic railroad, has been dissolved by
mutual consent and the business in toe
future will be conducted by William M.
Shatter.
Messrs. George Clifton, Box and William
Tedder have sold, within the past three
months, over $3,U00 worth of otter bides,
which they took from the dead bodies o.

Fire destroyed the borne of Fernando
Barrett aud hia sister at Lake Helen last
week. It caught tire about 9 o’clock at nigLt
from the kitchen adjoining, and nothing
was saved except a little bedding. The
house was insured in the Phoenix for ssoj.
The cost of the property was SI,OOO.
Jesse McAbee arrived at DeLund from
the Indian river country on Friday, where
he has purchased the crops of fruit' from a
number of largs groves, aggregating
about 20,000 boxes. He brought with him
from Indian river a grape fruit ten inches
In diameter, which is doubtless tbe largest
grape fruit ever seen in that section.
Jesse McAbee comes out $17,000 ahead in
the handling of Florida oranges so far this
season. Up to date he has shipped over
90,000 boxes from the crops be has pur
chased. The McAbee Fruit Company is
doubtless the largest buyer of Florida
oranges direct from tbs growers. He has
paid ail tbe nay from $1 to $1 75 per box
on the tree. (Juite a number of crops he
bought in bulk.
De Laud Record: Hon. E. N. Blake, who
spends hia winters at this place and Lake
Helen, has invested, within tbe past few
years, about s23,ociu in grove property, and
is of the opinion that the orange industry is
the best paying busine-s that a man can
turn his attention to here in Florida. His
investments in bearing grove property have
paid him 50 per cent.
At Melrose last week a man by the name
of Sim Scarborough dunned a young man
by tbe name of Joe Stephens for 20 cents,
wuich Stephens was due a firm that Scar
borough was collecting for. A light be
tween them ensued ami they were sepa
rated. Shortly afterward Scarborough
picked up an axehandle in oue of tne
stores, approached Stevens unawares and
struck him a blow, from tbe ellects of
which be died on the following day. Scar
borough escaped.

tory at Athens.

owned by a well-known Atlanta firm.
The mills in and around Athens are
again at work. The waters have been very
high,tint no serleua damage has been done.
The quarterly meeting of tho Washington
oouuty alliance was held in Sandersville
Monday. There was a full attendance,
averf sub-aUtahce beipg entirely repre
sented. Earliest and Strang speeches were
delivered, by invitation, by the state lect
urer aud Mr. Daniels. They unanimously
adopted the Southern Alliance Farmer os
their official organ, and indorsed its editor,
Harry C. Brown.
At a meeting ot tbe stockholders and
directors, held at Brunswick Mondav, the
Altamaha Cypress and Lumber Company
was re organized. The name of the com
pany, whioh was the “Altamaha Cypress
and Lumber Company,’’ was changed to
the “Altamaha Cypress Lumber Com
pany.” The following board of directors
was rs-slecied: Messrs. E. IJ. Chandler, S.
C. Gardiner, H. C. Gardiner, F. A. Boyle
and A. C. Conu. The following officers
were then elected fer the ensuing year:
President, E. E. Chandler; vice president
aed general manager, A. C. Conn; secre
tary, H. C. Gardiner; treasurer, C. S. Gar
diner.
