Eastman Times-Journal: Tho case of the Empire Lumber Company was called on Tuesday morning and was postponed until the fifth Monday in May, when an ad journed term will be held for the purpose of trying this case. Mrs. Annie Abbott, better known as Dixie Haygood, the Georgia electrio won der, has been astounding the people of Lon don, England, for several months past drawing large audiences at all her exhibi tions. A few days ago Miss Kate Dunlop of Macon, who is a sister of Mrs. Abbott, received from the latter a letter telling of her success, and inclosing a large number of photographs. In one of the pictures the Georgia wonder was wearing a SII,OOO dress, one of W orth’s latest. Eastman Times-Joumal; Our venerable friend, W. D. Lowry of Mitchell’s district, is TO years of age, but he is as sprightly as most boys of 17. During the present term of court Mr. Lowry has been serving on the grand jury, end lust Thursday when that body adjourned he decided that he ■would go home, a distance of nine miles, on foot. At once he started on his journey, and in two hours and ten minutes had reached bis destination, feeling not much the worse from his trip. Mr. Lowry is one of Dodge county's best citizens. Covington Star; Iu a ride of t wenty-Qve or thirty miles through the country, on Fri day, tne Star saw a Newton county man who had eighty or e gbty-five bales of cot ton packed away about his gin bouse. And he has pleuty of o. ru and meat to supply his farm demands for something to eat. He may not realize his full anticipations iu re gard to the price of o< tton, but he has it as a surplus anyhow, and does not need the money. There is still a considerable amount of cotton scattered through the country, and we would be glad to see it all aold for 10 cents a pound. Newnan Herald; E. 8. Daniel of Pan ther creek district is one of the most suc cessful oat growers in the county, and Dever fails to raise good crons of this useful cereal. He is running over with enthusiasm since his return from Kansas. He says the Kansas farmers are all in a tirosperous con dition, more so thau the Georgia fanners. He says some of the farms are mortgaged for the purchase money, but as a usual thing every farmer owns bis farm. The alliance, says Jce, Is dead in Kansas, and the state will give the republican party 50,000 majority this fall. The calamity howl has lost its charm, and the honest farmers fall back to their farms and their old parties. FLORIDA. The Tampa Bay hotel will remain open until the middle of April. Dees, burst, which resulted in the loss of the entire bar tel of syrup, Thu is the sixth barrel o' syrup that Mr. Dees has lost in this way duiing the past few months. Las: Thursday while George R. The democratic executive committee of Walker county has called a meeting of the citizens at the court house Saturday, April 0, to elect delegates to the state convention. The third party organized two weeks since ar.d there seems to be much surprise that so many of the leading citizens are avowed third party men. Mrs. L. Y. A. Blackwell, who fora long time has been on the editorial staff of the Southern Alliance Farmer, has been de posed. And all because of her s und demo cratic views, if rumors be true. Mrs. Black well left the piper Saturday, and leaves it with a splendid reoord for hard work and faithful endeavor. She is a sister of Larry Gantt and became connected with the paper when he assumed control last sum mer. Sho is a lady of splendid literary at tainments and a clear and forcible writer. Her work was bright and told to the credit of the paper. But Mrs. Blackwell is a demoorntofa family of uncompromising South Carolina democrats and did not take to the third party. A few weeks ago she was told not to write any more edi torials for the paper. Previously she had been doing a great deal of the work on the editorial page. Htill Mrs. Blackwell did not take to third party views and last week severed her connection with the paper. Mrs. Blackwell lias said nothing about the real cause of her leavlrg, hut It is common talk about alliance headquarters that she left on account of her views on political mailers. How His Love lor Kla Olgar Got Him Into an Uncomfortable Fix. From the Pittsburg Dispatch. Count von Moltke traveled one fine spring day In 18S8 from Berlin to Potsdam, and as his journey was on his own affairs alone he laid aside the uniform for the cooler garb of the civilian. Arrived at his destination, he walked through tho city, enjoying his good cigar and freedom from recognition. As he entered the open square before the pal ace, used as a parade gr und, the sentinel before the great portal called out that smok ing was not allowed there, but Moltke, lost in thought, or feeling himself above the law, walked calmly 011. But he hadsoaroo ly turned the corner when he was stopped by tho second sentinel, arousod by his com rade's call, and as the civilian does not eeem inclined to throw uv> ay hte cigar, the sol dier pushes him into tue sentry box, with the announcement that he is to remain there until the watch is changed. Moltke gives his name, but the sentry , serving hi* first year, answers that he does not kn :w the general and that any oivilian might declare himself to be Moltke. The general is obliged to acknowledge that the man . right, si he Mad unfortunately noth ing but his fac# to prove his Identity. 80 he remained in the sentry box until a friend happened to pass and Moltke prayed him to inform the officer of the watoh of his posi tion. The latter hurried to the spot and re leased the great strategist, who went at once to headquarters, aud half au hour later, to the delight of all srn ksrs, the placards with the interdict agalust that harmless pleasure disappeared from the gates of the square. 80 that an involuntary Incognito can occasionally have unexpected good effects.
