Colutnbu* Kuquirer-Hun: There was a
commotion in the gentlemen's waiting room
at the Union passenger depot about b o’clock
Mou'lay afternoon and fur a time thing*
looked squally. The disturbance was the
culmination of a family trouble which ha*
been exhtlog between Jock Enright and
John Kimbrough, brothers-in-law. On
Noy. 0 last Enright was married to Kim
brough's sister. Mrs. Bailie Bellma. The
latter hail about #1,400 worth of property
left her by her first husband, and Kim
brougb and his mother, suspecting that
this was one of her chief charms, strenuously
opposed tbe marriage. Their objections
were disregarded, however, and the event
took place on Nov. 9, 1892. A few days
ago Enright persuaded the woman to
sell her property and go with him
to visit some of his relatives in Dela
ware, Tha property vis sold, and with
about (bOO in greenbacks they started
Monday on tba journey, before going to
the depot the brotbers-ln-law, who hate
each other with a cat and dog hatred, met
at the postotflee aua treated tha officials to a
lively spat. Enright than hastened to the
depot to catch tbe Georgia Midland train,
closely followed by Kimbrough, who loudly
swore that the “rascal" shouldn’t get off
with bis sister’s money. At the gentlemen's
waiting room the fuss was renewed, and
but for the timely interference of Offloer
Newsome a serious denouement might have
been reached. A compromise was effected
by the woman giving her brother anew
(ICO hill and peace prevailed for tbe time.
1 hey left on the Georgia Midland to be fol

Mrs. Van Hook, a missionary who has
spent sixteen years in Persia, is visiting
friends in Atlanta. She talks entertainingly
of tbe land of the shah, the customs of his
people and the trials of Christian missiona
ries there. “The doors of our Episcopal
mission and school at Berltz are closed aud
scaled with an official stamp,” said Mrs. Van
Hook yesterday. “They were closed last
September and mission work cannot be con
ducted openly now as In the past. One of
our native converts, who is an elegant
preacher, is now in jail. It is a serious
thing to teach Christianity to Mohamme
dans. The laws are severe and natives who
openly profess Christianity are liable to
grave persecution. Our missionaries are
subjected to many annoyances and persecu
tions on the sly.” Speaking of the domes
tic life of the Persians, Mrs. Van Hook said
that their social relations seem very odd to
Europeans and Americans. “A man can
have aa many wives as he wishes
and can divorce them at will. When he
gets tired of one be tells her to go and
throws a shoe at her. She take* It as a legal
separation, and whether they have been
married for years or only a day, sha picks
up her things and goes She is free to
marry at once if she wishes, and has an of
fer. Mothers bear many children, but five
or six are all that grow up, aa a rule. Chil
dren get but little attention. A single girl
at 15 is an old maid. Marriage is con
tra ted at Hi and 12 and aa aarly at 8 years
of age. "The Persians are anything but
oleauly. They have public baths and the
women may spend half a day at them, but
the water is not what it should be. In
view of a poaalbility of an outbrsak of
cholera next summer, the physiciaus sug
gested that the water in the public baths
be changed at least every three months. No
precautions are taken to keep the supply of
water for cooking and drinking clean.
