A Colored Woman Oauyht In a Jrap
Set by Her Employer.
CottmßiA, S. C., Jan. IS.—A shocking
affair is reported from the plantation of
Joseph A. Baker, a well-to-do and highly
respectable farmer, four miles south of
Marlon. For some time Mr. Baker has been
missing corn from hts barn, last Friday
eight he set a strong steel trap in the barn
In the place where the corn bad been miss
ing. Next morning on going out be noticed
the form of an old colored woman
named Dolly Bethea, who had been
for some time in hi 9 employ
*, cook, sta'ding fast by the side of the
barn with one hand through the crack,
quiet and motionless. Mr. Baker entered
tbe barn and uulooked the trap, when the
old woman fell. Her band was badly cut
by tbe strong jaws of the powerful trap and
her body was wellnigh froze.., the weather
being intensely oold. She vans taken to the
house and cared for, but died. The old
woman had been in the family for a num
ber of years and was never suspected of tbe
theft. ,
A HIDEOUS EXECUTION.
The Victim's Head Nearly Torn From
His Body by the Fall.
Glasgow, Jan. 18. —A horrible scene oc
curred to-day at the execution of William
McEwan for the murder of a woman at
West Pollokshiel. McEwan, after commit
ting the crime, attempted to oommit sui
cide by cutting his throat. It was thought
that he would die from the effect of the
wound, but the doctors succeeded in saving
him for tbe gallows. Although his neck
was left in a very weak o .edition, the con.
detuned man was given a drop of seven
feet. He walked without apparent fear to
the gallows and the rope was adjusted.
When the bolt was drawn au awful specta
cle was witnessed, which caused even the
prisoD officials to tarn pale. The man’s
bead was nearly torn off and blood gushed
out over his body and the gallows. Death
was instantaneous. Much Indignation is
expressed against tbe authorities for not
having taken precautions against such au
occurrence.
STILL PICKING AT BRIGGS.
The Frosecutlng Committee Talks
Four Hours Without Result.
New York, Jan. IH,—Cel. John L.
McCook, Dr. George W. F. Biroh.-Dr.
Joseph J. Larnpe, Dr. Robert F. Sample,
and John J. Stevenson, composing the
Briggs prosecuting committee, considered
this afternoon the question of an appeal
from the recent vote of the
New York . presbytery acquitting
Dr. Briggs of the charge of
heresy. The committee was unable to make
up its mind in four hours and will hold
another meeting to-morrow afternoou. Tbe
committee will have to decide to-morrow
whether or not it will take an appeal, as the
ten days allowed by theoburch iaw for such
action then expire. It is believed by many
that an appeal will not be taken.

Repeal of the Tax on State Banks Ad

Raleigh, N. C., Jan. 18.—Gov. Elias
Carr and the other recently elected state
officers were sworn in to-day by Chief
Justice Shepherd. Notwithstanding the in
clemency of the weather a great crowd at
tended the ceremonies. Many distinguished
men and many todies were present. The
inaugural address was conservative in tone.
The governor advocates tne repeal of the
ID per cent, tax on state bank notes, ad
verts to tbe agricultural character of the
population of tne state, and urges legisla
tion friendly to tbe farming interest, and
economy in the administration of the state
affairs. The address givergreat satisfac
tion. _
MUNCIE'S STRIKE.
Danger that Other Men on the Lake
Erie Will Go Out.
Mux.cn, Ind., Jan. 18.—The strike of the
yard switchmen on tbe Lake Erie system at
this point is getting worse. Every iron
and steel plant In the city is closed, with
more than 1,000 men out of work. The
conductors, engineers, switchmen and fire
men on through freights will strike in
sympathy in case non-union men are put
on. Attorney Hackadorn arrived- last night
with injunction papers against all the
strikers, prohibiting them from going on
the company’s property. Railroad officials
refuse to talk of arbitration or recognize
the men or their committees Trouble will
ensue should an attempt be made to take
the train out.

001. John P. Thomas of Columbia
Breaks His Ankle Badly.
Columbia, S. C., Jan. 18.—CoL John P.
Thomas, the well-known soholar, met with
a serious accident to-night while walking
through the snow on bis way home. His
foot slipping he fell and dislocated his ankle.
Both bones of the lower portion of the leg
were broken and driven by the force of
the fall up to the middle of the ankle. It
looked as if the bones had entered the foot
at the middle point. He was found lying
in the snow and carried home. His physi
cian found it neoessory to chloroform him
before he could set the broken hones. He
ssys it is one of the worst breaks of the
kind that he ever saw.

Evansville, I.nd., Jan. 18.— While run
ning to a fire last night a book and ladder
truck was overturned and an engine and a
street oar collided, injuring five firemen,
two of them fatally.
Jacob Beck bad bis baok broken and wlli

John Walsh-had bis skull fraotured and
will die.
•Joe Myer bad a hip broken.
Ueorge Schmitt bad a leg broken.
William Biscbtnan was caught beneath
the engine and crushed, receiving severe in
ternal injuries. His recovery is doubtful,

It Was Once the Site Where the Con

Richmond. Va., Jan. 18.—Information
was received here to-night of the burning
of the old Howlett house, located on the
south l.aDk of tho .1 sines river, opposite
Butch Gap, and famous in war annals.
There was a cortejerate battery of artillery
stationed at this house during tbo war, and
while Gen. Butler was cutting his canal
through Dutch Gap his troops were con
stantly fired upon from this point. It was
occupied by a family from Michigan, who
lost ail their personal effects. Ihe lot is
*1,500. with no insurance.

No Change in the situation In the

Topeka, Kan., Jan. IK—Fifteen re
publicans, cne populist and one democrat
senator met in joint session with the re
publican House tbis morning to ballot for
state printer. The republicans voted for
George W. Crane, but as no candidate could
receive a constitutional majority there was
no election, and the session adjourned.
The rival houses met together as usual
this morning, but their proceedings were
not marked with excitement, and on the re
publican side there was no interest what
ever. A large grist of bills and resolutions
were introduced on both sidee.
A world’s fair bill.
The populists mnde a start, which, if oar
ried to a conclusion, will land tbe solution
of the complications in the supreme court.
It is a bill to appropriate |tO,OOD to the
world’s fair. The populists offer the
world’s fair bill because it is a popular
measure, and they hope to place tho respon
sibility of defeating It upon tbe republicans
if it be attacked in the supreme court.
Tbe populist elections committee has re
ported. unseating Representative Ballinger
of Coffee county and giving the seat to Mr.
Rica This is the famous tie case.
WYOMING’S POPULISTS.
Their Candidate for Senator Stands a
Good Chance.
Cheyenne, Wyo., Jan. 18. —The popul
ists are now a distinct factor in the Wyom
ing senatorial contest, They have cau
cused and fixed upon a man to be
supported in all the joint sessions. Their
choice is William Brown of Sheridan
county. He is a democrat but has been co
operating with the populists lately. Mr.
Brown is a workingman, made a good
record in tba legislature, is educated and
has taught school in the north. If the
populists stick to him they can elect him,
for-tb# democrats can urge against him no
objection, except that he is not rich.
Senator Bate the Winner.
Nashville, Ten’n., Jan. 18. —The Senate
arid House met in joint session to-day and
Speaker Plsmuker announced that the total
number of votes cast by tbe members of
tbe two houßes for United States senator
was 122; necessary to a choice, 82. Senator
Bate received 80, George W. Winstead 81
and M. F. Garrett 2.
Nebraska’s First Joint Ballot.
Lincoln, Neb. Jan. 18.—The first bailot
of tbe legislature in joint session at noon
to-day for United Stales senator resulted as
follows: Paddock 32, Powers 27, Majors 7,
McKelghan.6, Boyd 4, Edgerson 5, Thom
s >n4. Forty-six votes were scattered among
twenty-two other candidates. Neoessary to
a choice 66.
No Choice in Washington.
Olyjapia, Wash., Jan. 18.—The legisla
ture, iu joint sessiou, took five unsuccessful
ballots for United States senator and then
adjourned out of respect for the memory of

M. White, dem., of LosAngelee, was elected

SYNOPSIS.
The maxitnum temperature for the day
was 34 c and the minimum 29“, the mean
temperature ieing 82“, or 20 below the
normal. Tbe total precipitation for the
day, including mow and aleet melted, and
rain wa4 .86 of an inch, .10 of which wav
snow. The depth of anow on ground im
mediately after anowfall wan one inch.
At 8 o’clock p. m. unsettled weather con
ditions prevailed throughout the Middle
Atlantic state*, lower lake region,
Ohio valley, end south of the Ohio river,
with snow falling at Detroit, Cleveland,
Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Knoxville, Kaleigb,
Charlotte, Wilmiugton and Atlanta, and
rain at Augusta, Charleston, Meridian,
Montgomery, New Orleans and Mobile
Cloudiness la also reported from Eastern
Texas, with snow falling at Palestine.
Au area of high pressure covers the Near
England and Middle Atlantic coasts and
North Carolina. The “high” noted in
Tuesday night’s synopsis as moving in from
the extrema northwest has moved south
eastward. and to-night covers the Missouri
valley.
Generally clear weather prevails in the
Upper Mississippi valley, upper lake region
and west of tbe Mississipni north of Trxus.
The storm central this (Wednesday) morn
ing in tbe Central Gulf, has moved slightly
northeastward to Northern Florida.
The following telegram was received this
(Wednesday) afternoon from Chief Har
rington of the weather bureau: “Storm
northeast signals ordered at Savannah aud
Savannah section. Jaoks nville aud Jack
sonville section, storm central in Central
Gulf, moving east.”
The forecast for Savannah and vioinity is;
Putin or snow, high northeast winds, be
coming ; nortbs and northwest, clearing,
colder by Thursday night. The center of
the Gulf storm will probably move over
Southern Georgia during to-night (Wednes

Savannah, Ga., Jan. 18.—The lessons
taught by the election for mayor and alder
men, held on Jau. 17, are too obvious to
need either argument or explanation.
It says in unmistakable language that the
aspirant for office, who months In advance,
nominates himself and says to the people,
‘‘l afti tn’ to stay, and you have no choloe
or rights entitled to respect, will have his
impudence rebuked and be releguted to tbe
obscurity of private life.
It says iu tones ot thunder to all schooling
agitators of a class who claim to oarry elec
tions in their pockets, “thus far Bhalt thou
go and no farther,” and reminds them that
it is wise to attond to their own affairs, and
not to run counter to tba wishes of the poo
pie.
It says to “the bold, bad men” who defy
law, “cease to do evil and learn to do well,”
lest tbe righteous indignation of the people
becomes fatigued and you be grouud to
powder.
It says by a majority of 623 votes that
the brave, impartial, and honest adminis
tration of Hon. John J. McDonough meets
the hearty approval of a Cnristian commu
nity, aud that it is in perfect sympathy
with bis effort to enforce ordinances, at
ones the laws of God and man.

F. Wood, wife of a promlr.ent pioneer citi
zen of Hardin oounty, bas just died at
