THE DOINGS IN POOLER.
The Terra Cotta Factory to Be In
Operation Soon.
John Otto of Savannah visited the home
of Henry Shanes last week.
John Forsyth was visiting at the home of
hl sister, Mrs. J. W. Lee, last week.
Miss Annie Peach of Wavorow, accom
panied by her brother Joe, ai e visiting their
nncle, Mr. Ed Eden.
Charles Johnson and John Stahmer of Sa
vannah were visiting at the home of John
Von Bergen last week.
J, E. Willman of Chicago visited the
h ;me of his brother, James Willman, last
week. Mr. \\ iliman has not been here in
several years, ana was surprised at the
growth of Pooler.
The roof of Sam Blackwell’s residence on
Rothwell street was discovered on fire last
week, and haa it not been for the quick
work of KH. Shaves the building would
have been destroyed.
ihe meeting of the Pooler fire company
did not amount to anything Thursday even
ing, and the few members who have been
trying to get the organization perfected,
were so thoroughly disgusted that it was
decided to return each member what dues
bad been paid In and let the affair die.
The Ladies’ Building Society of the Pooler
Methodist church will hold an oyster fes
tival at the residence of Mrs. W. T. Harri
son on Tuesday evening, March 14. The re
ceipts of this festival are to be used in ootn
pieting the work under thdir direction in
the interior of the church, which has been
ir. program for some time.
The friends of Eugene Guilfoylo of Sa
vannah are pleased with the advancement
he has made lately with the Central rail
road. He has been placed m quite a num
ber of positions in the mechanical depart
ments during the past year, all of whicn he
has tilled to the satisfaction of the master
mechanic and with credit to himself.
Ed Starrs, the polite and courteous flag
man of the sboofly, was transferred lust
week to a freight run, where he will have a
chance of being promoted to the position of
a conductor. Hia place on the shoofly is
being tilled by Flagman Swmfoot, who will
endeavor to make himself as popular with
the patrons of the train as Mr. Starrs was.
Pooler certainly has a genius in William
T. Harrison as an inventor. He has several
patent rights already, and now comes to
the frout with anew and ingenius method
of tanning leather. By the old process six
weeks was usually consumed in tanning
hides ready for market, but Mr. Harrison
claims that by his method three days will
be all the time required, and is building the
necessary outfit with which he will demon
strate the workings of his scheme.
The regular communication of Kichard
T. Turner Lodge No. 110, F. and A. M.,
Wednesday evening, was one of the most
pleasant ever held. Quite a number of vis
itors were present, among them J. A. Bren
nan and A. Mikel of Ogeechee Lodge No.
218, J. J. Groom, J. C. Edwards, W. It.
Hondricks, H. K. Eismure aud 1). C. New
ton of Ezel Lodge No. 335, H. M. Carter,
Bryan Lodge No. 303; 1). L. Jackson, Lan
drum Lodge No. 48. The M. M. degree
was conferred on two candidates, after
wbioh a fish fry was indulged iu.
The announcement in laßt Sunday’s
Mobninu Nkws that a company had been
formed to manufacture terracotta piping
in Pooler was quite a surprise to many here.
The machinery has been brought to Pooler
and will be placed in position in a few days.
Mr. Ben Rothwell, one of Pooler’s most
progressive citizens, is at the head of the
oompany, and his mill site will be the pres
ent factory. Examinations have been
made regarding the necessary material,
and Pooler was selected as the most advan
tageous point at whioh to locate the plant.
Last Thursday afternoon as the dinner
train was returning to Savannah and when
Dear the 8-mile post someone threw a rock
through a window, smashing the glass and
barely missing the head of a passenger, who,
unthinkingly, changed his seat only a few
minutes before. Had he remained in the
seat he would have been seriously injured
as the missile made a deep . dent in the
closet door on the opposite side of the car,
where it struck. Complaint has been made
by several of the employes that throwing
rocks at the trains has been on the inorea-e
lately. The Central authorities are after
the parties, and they will be severely prose
cuted if caught.
A TOURIST'S EXPERIENCE.
A Trip to the Salta Over the City and
suburban Railway.
I had not been in that most delightful
aid most distinctly southern town of Sa
vannah more than a day or so when I re
ceived an invitation from my old class
mate, Jonos, to visit him in his country
home near the historical old place. Fine
fellow Jonos, by the way. I had not met
him since his marriage with a young lady,
whom be glowingly described us the pret
tiest girl in Georgia. Naturally I wanted
to see him, and so, very nat
urally too, I disregarded the
rather apologetic postscript to his
note. “I a:n afraid, my dear fellow, that
you will find the trip a trifle uncomfortable,
coming as you do from the laud of rapid
transit. The schedule is somewhat uncer
tain, so you had better be at the as
soon after breakfast as possible. Don’t re
gard the printed schedule.” I must say
tnat upon second reading this struok me as
peculiar. I determined, however, to bury
niy northern notions, and being in Rome to
do as the Romans. Accordingly, I
arose with the lark and found myself
at the depot at something to ten to
catch the 1U:o7 train. Early as I was there
were two ladies ahead of me. We were
soon joined by othors, and at the end of ten
minutes quite a goodly company were col
lected. By 10 o’clock all the passengers
were assembled save one, a yankee with a
camera, whom I had seen at the hotel. He,
poor fellow, not being notified of the eccen
tricities of the country, arrived at 10:25and
the car had to tie stopped some
way out for him. But I anticipate. Being
a conservative creature, I went directly
to a small window with “Ticket Office"
written above and thumped for some time.
Soon a nondescript looking man poked his
head into t.be room and stared surprisediy
at me. “Can I get a ticket heref’ I asked
politely, “Naw, sir. Yir don’ git yer
ticket till yer git on the car.” "O!" I ex
claimed and joined the lediee on the
bench. There were cars, going to
other places (electric cars, Acre let
tne hero state), coming In at intervals.
W henover one of thes hove iu sight all of
the ladies of the 10:37 train got up in
a body, and rushing to it in a state of
pleasurable excitement, demanded of the
conductor: “Does this car go to Isle of
Hope;" The official, without once looking
up murmured, as if by heart, “No, ma’m,two
cars after.” The ladies then pioked up their
baskets (all of them had baskets) and sub
sided on t e bench again, only to dash ex
citedlv at. the next two oars. The iost of
those sallies was successful and we boarded
cur car. We soon started off and pro
ceeded for seme distance with
n " interesting incident save that
a read y mentioned. About a mile out of
*be town the tickets were distributed for a
f sideratlon. Each ticket ha 1 to be care
fully explained to Its possessor by tho cou-
Quc.ior. Some of the passengers, myself in
cluded, desired to go to Montgomery, be
pond Isle of Hope; we were told that
wo would have to change cars in
order to do so; and a, to the
ticket—why, “you couldn’t get a
ticket to Montgomery. 1 here’ll boa fellow
cn the other car would take your money,"
in the course of the morning we arrived at
* >mall station—Sand Fly. where
wo were ordered to change cars. Here three
*'f ttio ladies, myself and seven darkies

encouraging response: “0,1 reckon some
time between 12 and 1.” At intervals along
the road the darkies in the back part of the
car would get out and race it along the
track, occasionally stopping to have a little
boxing match, but catching up In a few
steps. This rested their weary limbs aud
at the same time afforded amuse
ment to the passengers After traveling
about three-quarters of an hour the oun
ductor announced “Burnside station!”
at which there was a murmur from
the dark background of "Burnside,
tank Gawd!” Straightway the seven
darkies got out. The next station was
mine, aud I found Jones there to meet me.
Jones is as fine a fellow as ever, his wife is
as sweet as she is pretty, and their home is
an earthly paradise, but, my friends, the
getting there! We were two hours going
twelve miles. Any one desiring the ad
