Tba Public Health Committee on the
Scarlet Ferer.
At the iat meeting of the committee on
public health of the Citizen*’ Sanitary As
iociatioa a reeoiution was adoDted requast
iag the publication of the following sug
gestion* to the people of Savannah, by the
ohairmanof the committee, Dr. J. C. Le-
Hardy:
What to do to prevent tbe *pread of
scarlet fever.
Scarlet fever belongs to that class of
diseases from which oontagion is trans
mitted through tbe air. The nature of the
organism producing this diseaeo has not. as
jet, teen clearly but it is
evidently very minute and floats about In
every part of the room in which a patient
afflicted with the disease is confined. The
microbe is given off In the breath and by
exhalations from the body, and If iho doors
of a house in which the disease has ap
peared are left open, infection may extend
to every part of the house.
To prevent the spread of this dangerous
disease, first keep children away from it if
possiblei 2. Wheu any child indicates
symptoms of the disease, all other ohiidren
In the same house should be sent away
from it.
The patient should tbeu 1* taken to a
room in the uppermost part of the house;
prepared for occupation of the patient by
the removal from it of everything not ab
solutely neoeesary to the comfort of the pa
tient.
Contagion is more apt to be carried by
the air upward than otherwise; henoe no
patient afflicted with scarlet fever should
occupy a lower room. The nurse of such
patients should, as far as pos
sible, remain on tbe same floor
with the patient, and he careful
to avoid contact with other members of the
family, especially children.
The nurse, by carelessly coming to the
lower part of the house, may carry poison
of the disease all over it and wall persons in
it thereby become infected. As the poison
of the disease will attach iiself to clothing
it is always dangerous for well persons to
visit tbe siok chamber and come out of it,
as by so doing they may spread the disease
wherever they go. Nurses, or other attend
ants upon suoh patients, should not go
about from the sick room until they have
taken disinfecting baths and completely
changed their clothing. Pet animals or toys
should not be allowed in the room of a
child, afflioied with the dlseaso, for Its
amusement, as they are liable to oonvey In
fection. Letters should not bo written in
and sent out from the patient’s room for the
sains reason. The use of books in the room
from a public library is attended with like
risk.
Scarlet fever Is much mere fatal among
children than measles and much more to be
dreaded. A greater number of children die
annually from scarlet fever than from any
ether oontagion* disease. The older a per
son is the less danger; therefore small
children should tie taken away from the
disease immediately upon Its appearance in
a bouse occupied by them. A patient with
tbe disease should be isolated at once and
kept so until the skin regains Us normal con
dition. During convalescence the outer layer
of the patient’s skin peels off and small par
ticles containing the germs of the disease
fly about, henoe tbe necessity for isolation
of the patient until the peeling process is en
tirely completed, involving a titne of from
six to eight weeks’ duration. To lessen the
risk of contagion during this period the akin
should be rubbed over with bacou, olive oil,
coooa butter or vaseline.
Except small-pox there is, perhaps, no
other disease iu which the germs of oon
tagion cling so long to the bod}', therefore a
convalescent from scarlet fever should be
avoidßd as carefully as a person suffering
from the disease.
Now what should be done to make an
apartment safe for ocoupancy after being
infected with scarlet fever i Disinfection of
itf IV hat is disinfection? It is the process
by which disease germs are destroyed. Any
agent that will destroy disease germs is a
disinfectant. Many persons imagine that
any substance which is capable of dispelling
offensive odors Is a disinfectant, but this is
a mistake. Unless the substance applied
destroys the germ of a disease it is worth
less as a disinfectant. Deodorants
may be used to render the sick room
agreeable, but it is always best to get rid of
bad odors by cleanliness and fresh air than
to try hide them. It is always better to
turn vitiated air out of a wiudow or up a
ohitnney or ventilator than to use chemicals,
such as carbolic acid, chloride of lime, etc.
The use of disinfectants in a room while the
patient occupies it is dangerous, but after
the patient ha 9 been removed from the sick
room every article In it should be disin
fected.
Every garment or piece of bedding that
can be washed should be pnt into a disin
fecting solution, then boiled and laundered.
Boiling for half hour will destroy all disease
germs. All bedding or clothing that can
not be washed should bo disinfected by hot
air at 250° or suoerheated steam; and the
city authorities should furnish appliances
for this purpose in order that the poor as
well as the rich could have articles disin
fected.
If the room oooupied by a person with
scarlet fever is papered, after removing
everything else from it the papering should
also be removed and the walls, woodwork
and floor should be washed with a solution
of bichloride of meroury, one part to 1,000
of water. After this is done the woodwork
and floor ehould be thoroughly scrubbed
wi th soap and hot water. Never use a dust
ing brush or feathers in a room where oon
tagion exists.
1 hsease germs, as well as dust, are dis
lodged by the brush and feathers, and may
he taken up oy them and carried to some
susceptible person. It would be better to
wipe the dust off with a cloth wet in some
disinfeoting solution. The burning of sul
phur is not to be relied upon as a germ de
stroyer. The oorrosive sublimate solution is
infinitely superior to it If properly applied.
If sulphur be used at all, the room and
everything in it should be well moistened
and three pounds of sulphnr burned to
every 1,000 cubic feet of air space and the
room kept closed up for twenty-four hours
thereafter.

The Conklin Manufacturing Company,
importers of tin-plates and metals, has
established an office and warehouse at lU3
River street, under the cotton exchange.
The business consists mainly in tbe Importa
tion of tin-plates but the company also deals
in tin-plates of domestio manufacture, also
galvanized and black sheet iron, sheet zinc,
copper, Russia iron, in fact sheet metal*
and tinners' supplies of all kinds, at whole
sale only. A through shipment from Eng
land of 150 tons of tin-plate has just been
received which will be disposed of, in
competition with any market, to the looel
trade and to the trade in inland points.
QThis is an important addition to the whole
sale business of Savannah, and is another
indication of the fact that it is attracting
the attention of business men as the coming
commercial city of tho south. Mr. Charles
A. Conklin, the proprietor and manager of
the Conklin Manufacturing Company, is an
energetio business man, and he will doubt
less establish a large trade iu his line.
Not tha Day for Oranges.
A customer called upon a prominent
produce dealer on the Bay yesterday to pur
chase some oranges.
"I want a box of oranges,” be said, as he
entered the store.
“You can’t get them,” replied the dealer,
who displayed a suggestive shamrock upon
the lapel of his coat. ’Til sell you all the
potatoes in the house, but oranges don’t go
to-day.”

The session of the city court yesterday
was occupied with the case of John M.

he had been damaged to that extent, in that
be bad been illegally and unjustly arrested
aud carried to the city barracks.
Mr. Lamotte was arrested for disorderly
conduct and spitting on the floor of one of
the cars of that line In July, 1881. He
brought suit for $5,000 damages against tho
