Chatham, March 18—Bark Altarnaha remains
in the same position and lies easy on a sandy
bottom. The sea has gone down, making the
1 rospect favorable for saving both vessel and
cargo. Tug Mercury arrived to-night with a
big lighter and will begiu the work of lightering
ber deckload at daylight in the morning.
NOTICE TO MARINERS.
Notice is hereby given that on or about April
1,18113. lirht-vessel No, 54, now moored off
Nantucket New South Shoal, Massachusetts,
will be removed from the station for repairs,
and replaced, without change in characteristics
of lights or for Bignal, by relief light vessel
No. 39.
Relief light-vessel No. 39 has two masts,
schooner rigged, with a red hoopiron day mark
at each masthead; hull red, with “No 39” on
each quarter.
Light-vessel No. 54 will be replaced on the
station when the repairs have been completed,
of which due notice will be given.

Notice is hereby given that on or about April
SO, 1883, the characteristic of the light at Fowey
Rocks light station, northerly extremity or the
Florida reefs, Florida, will be changed from
fixed white to fixed white with three fixed rad
sectors.
The northerly red sector will extend from
B'4 K eastward to S4 W. The westerly edge
of the sector will pass just to seaward of BU
cayne shoal (red) buoy and will cut north end
of Florida reefs, “Cape Florida,” (red) buoy,
and its easterly edge will guide olear to the
eastward of the shoal spots lying from 14 to
34 miles to the northward of the light.
The southerly red sector will extend from N 4
W westward to N by E <4 E. The easterly edge
of the sector will guide clear to the eastward of
the reefs lying more than 14 miles to the south -
wnrd of the light. The westerly edge of the
sector will cut Old Rhodes bank buoy (red. No
8). in Hawk channel.
The westerly red sector will extend from E 4
N northward to E 4 8. The southerly edge of
the secrer cuts Coral Bunches buoy (black). No.
1, f’ape Florida channel. The northerly edge
* of the sector cuts Fowey Rocks buoy ( black},
No. *, Hawk channel.
Bearings are magnetic, given approximately,
and from seaward; distances are in nautioal

SYNOPSIS.
The maximum temperature for the day
was 62®, and the minimum 40°, the mean
temperature being 5I“, or 8° below the
normal.
At 8 o’clock p. m. a barometric trough ex
tended from the upper lake region south
westward to the Rio Grande, causing cloudi
ness in Southwestern North Carolina, Geor
gia. Tennessee, thrugbout the Gulf states
and Mississippi valley, and from the Ohio
northward over the lake region. At the
time of the observation rain was falling at
Pensacola, Mobile, New Orleans, Mont
gomery, Meridian, Memphis, 81. Louis, In
dianapolis, Chicago end Detroit, and snow
at Marquette and Bismarok.
An area of high pressure oovers the At
lantic seaboard, aDd a second “high” is
moving in from the extreme northwest.
The temperature has risen in all sections,
except is Missisippi, Western Tennessee
and North Dakota, where it is slightly
colder.
Light to fresh east to southeast winds
prevail along the Atlantic and East Florida
coasts.
The forecast for Savannah and vlomity is:
Increasing cloudiness and rain; warmer;
probably a thunder storm Tuesday after
