the A. S. lbompson dwelling, and will shortly
begin the building of a pretty residence thereon.
The report of the liabilities and assets of Mr.
Boaz of Ga houn, who assigned a few days ago,
was erroneous His liabilities are about $29,0(X)
instead of SO.V o.'. as reported, and his assets
amount to #41.000, ami tht*y are iu such a fix
that all the creditors will be paid.
George B. Tatum of Benton Harbor, Mich.,
is at Fort Yadey investigating things with the
view of erecting a large ice manufacturing
plant, and thinks now he will 1 cue there. His
brother, W 8. Tatum, is president of the Fort
Valley Crate and Lumber Company.

Mrs. Malinda Oglesby, wife of Has Oglesby, at
Oglesby Bros, mill in Berrien county, was
frightfully burned Monday afternoon from
the effects of which she died early Tuesday
morning. Bhe was burning some gras.*? from a
plac * where shd wished to make a garden when
her clothing caught fire.
Armstead Armstrong, a negro who was con
victed in the superior court at Macon several
days ago for burglary’, escaped from the guards
who were taking hicn to the penitentiary Fri
day night by jumping from a oar window on
the blast Tennessee railroad while the train was
running forty miles an hour.
The Macon Brewing Company has given way
to the Acme Brewing Company. The reorgaui
zation was perfected Thursday last and a new’
set of officers was elected. Alex Blosk is the
president, H. Horne vice president, J. >\ Haz’.e
hurst secretary, treasurer and superintendent.
The directors are H. Horne, A Block, J. N.
Hazlehurßt. R. H. Plant, J 8 Baxter, A L>. Scho
field and N M. Block.
The old Guernsey lot. situated on the corner
of Tint and Cherry streets at Macon, was sold
batu day for $19,000. J. C. Ea is was the pur
chaser. and he will immediately have a large
and handsome buil.hug erected* on the site. The
first fioor of the building wll probably be occu
pied by a large business coucern, and. although
it ias not yet been decided what the exact size
of t e building will be, it is understood that the
Young Men's Christian Association will occupy

Editor J. K. Brown of Newoan is betwixt the
two fires of desire and ronuuciation. He wishes
to be postmaster at Newman and has Hon. Mr.
Moses wor in z in his interest. But when Mr.
>'oses called at the poctoffice department at
Washington to urge Mr. Brown s claim, Mr.
Bisseii stated that If Mr. Brown should be ap
pointed he would have to abandon bis paper.
He said that it was an Iron-clad rule of the de
partment that lOatm&sters in towns of the im
portance of Ne w man should have no other busi
ness, but should devote their ootire time to the
postoffice. The matter stands thus; i ditor
Brown will have to abandon his paper or he can
not be postmaster.
E. T. Clegg of Columbus and two of his
children, aged 7 and 5. and his little grandson,
3 years old, had been suffering from severe
colds for some time and sent to a drug store on
Saturday to get some quinine. By a mistake
either on the part of the buyer or the seder,
morphine was gotten instead and taken to
Mr Clegg. He took a large dose himsdf and
gave each of the children some. In a short
while the poison commenced to take effect and
all were in a dangerous condition. Dr. Griggs
was summoned and responded as quickly as
possible and i>r. Kitchens and Dr. Butts came
soon afterward. They worked hard keeping
Mr. Clegg and the litt'e fellows awake and
giving them antidotes to counteract the effects
of the morphine. They we e whipped and
burneu and every devic j was used to keep them
awake an 1 finally the physicians were success
ful. and ail aro now out of danger.
Considerable talk has been indulged in for the
past few days as to how many hands, teams,
etc., it would require to handle a full peach
crop grown around Fort Valley In two yearn’

The prospect is good for the heaviest yield
for several years of oranges in Columbia
county.
T. Dan by of Gainesville sold a carload of cab

on a $5 confederate bill that a customer paid
him for some goods bought by her.
The supreme court has awarded anew trial
to Tom Donald, charged with the murder of
Mr. Hussey at Chattahoochee. He Las been
twice tried already and will get the third trial.
J. E. Priohmore, while working in the saw
mill of C. M. Weeks, at Prairie Creek, in Al
achua county, recently had the misfortune to
have hi* hand caught in a buzz saw. The two
middle lingers of his right hand were cut ofT
above the second joint.
A fire on Friday burned the place of J. O.
Walton at Eau Uallie. It took everything with
It, except hi* residence, which was saved by
very hard work. All his orange, lemon and
other trees and shrubbery are gone Mr. Wal
ton has two residences one in Titusville and
the other in Eau Uallie.
A negro named Frank Scarborough was shot
at Chattahoochee last Saturday night by an
other negro, supposed to be Oliver Bell. Scar
borough was a witness against Bell and others
Charged with stealing from a car some weeks
ago, and threats had heen made against him
Scarborough will get well.
A personal letter was received a few days ago
by a lady at St. Augustine from a friend in
Richmond, Va . asking for coquina material for
reproducing our city gates in the la lies con

forwarded to Richmond.

The supreme court of Florida on Thursday
flle l an opinion reversing the case of Buck Hall
of Jackson county, who is under sentence of
death for murder, on account of the failure of
the wrdict to specify the degree of homicide of
which the defendant was guilty, as required by
section 2JB of the revised statutes Buck Hall
is one of the men convicted of the murder of
young Eley in Jackson county two years ago.
He was convicted last summer and sentenced
to be hanged, but pending his appeal to the su
preme court ho was taken to the Jail ar Pensa
cola for sate keeping, where he has l**en con
fined since last July
