CLEANING OUT BAD PLACES.
Th City Authorities Taking Up the
Sanitary Work in Earnest.
Inspector Desvergers of tho Citizens’ Sani
tary Association, in his report of inspec
tions for the week ending last night, says
that food produce of all kinds was abund
ant and of good average quality.
He says in reference to sanitary condi
tions in the city, that the old privy vaults
and the old-fashioned hopper water closets
and defective plumbing continue to menace
the health of many families.
In reference to the ease with , which the
sanitary condition of grounds around the
city can be improved, it has been well
demonstrated by the work of Capt. Purse
iu converting the old Lloyd brick yard, in
the eastern part of the oity, from a nuisance
into a dry and level plateau of land. After
Ite making of bricks on these grounds was
abandoned many years ago the pits became
pernicious factors of malaria and continued
a nuisance to the inhabitants of the eastern
portion of the oity until the grounds passed
by purchase iuto the l ands of Capt. Purse
and the pits were filled up and the grounds
graded and leveled.
It would be a most fortunate circum
stance, the Inspector says, for the inhab
itants of the western portion of the city, and
for the employes of thene v water works
who spend their nights there, if alikechange
could be wrought in the condition of the old
abandoned brick yard pits in the vicinity of
the water works, and the brick yards now iu
operation but a little way out could be
discontinued at onoe.
The boxdraio now being put in the brow
ditch on the eastern slope of the city will
also effect important sanitary benefits to
that section.
The inspeotor reports tho manifestation,
at last, on the part of the sanitary authori
ties of the oity of some energy in the direc
tion of yard cleaning. He has observed a
considerable force of laborers during the
past week, employed by the sanitary de
partment, removing from under house Band
taking from yards accumulations which,
from the frightful proportions and the dis
gusting composition of tne piles of filth
collected in front of some premises prelim
inary to its removal by carts, suggested the
conjecture that the accumulation had been
occurring for mauy years.
RIVER AND HARBOR.
The United States launch Discover came
down off W lllink’s marine railway yester
day after having her bottom oleaned. She
is now at the wharfe of the novelty works
having her machinery overhauled and re
paired.
Messrs. Strachan & Cos. oleared yester
day the Spanish steamship Churruoa for
Barcelona with 2.100 bales of upland cotton,
weighing 1,011,288 pounds, valued at
$92,896. In addition she hat 4,045 bags of
sugar in transit from Cuba.
The Recent Elevator Accidents.
The Morning News prints the following
letter from Mr. James Bates of the Bates
elevator explanatory of the recent elevator
accidents in Savannah which, while they
ocjurred to Bates elevators, be was in no
wise responsible for:
BALTiMoar, Md.. March 23, 1893.
Mr. J. H. Estill, President the Morning Sews,
Savannah, Oa: .
Dear Sir—l have received through several
of my friends at Savaunah copies of your paper
of March 21, in reference to the elevator Occi
dent at the Savannah Carriage company’s
warehouse, in which my name is used several
times in relatioi%to this affair, and also to other
accidents that have occurred at other places,
all ot which have a tendency to do me a great
deal of harm and injury, personally and in my
business, and lam satished that if you bad
knowu the true facts in relation to this acci
dent you would not bare had my name men
•tioned as it was. *•
The elevator mentioned was an old elevator
that had been in use for several years, and was
an ordinary warehouse freight ele
vator. The owner of the buildiue
several weeae ago wrote me for an
estimate to erect complete in the building a car
rlage or wagon elevator, as the old one wds
too small for the purpose, and desired me to
take the old elevator In exchange or part pay
ment for tho larger elevator. Since corre
sponding with the party I did not hear anything
further about the elevator until I'heard through
John Bate-, who hail just returned from the
south, that the owner had himself arranged to
alter the old elevator into a carriage or wagon
elevator, and it was done by some local con
tractor in Savannah for him.
if the accident was caused as stated in your
paper, it was no doubt caus- and In making the
alterations and no responsibility is attached to
me, as I had nothing whatever to do with it,
and my name should not have been mentioned
in connection with it.
The other accident mpntioned as having oc
curred at A. B. Hull’s establishment about
eighteen months ago, was thoroughly investi
gated at the time and it was proven that it was
caused by the negligence of one of the em
ployes iu allowing a truck to be Improperly
placed on the platform and extend out beyond
the edge of the platform, and to the ascent the
truck came in contact with the floor joist and
badly strained the cable, and a few weeks after
ward the elevator was overloaded and broke the
cable at the connection, from being strained the
first time, and twisted the platform out of level
so that the safety applies* could not act.
The accident also mentioned as tiaving oc
curred at J. M. Dixqn & Co.’s I did not know
anything about, and it is the first time that 1
have heard of it. It was not erected by me,
but by someone in Savannah. As the personal
mention of my name in connection with these
accidents will injure me in Savannah and else
where, and my business is quite large in the
state of Georgia and other southern states,
where your paper may be read, and knowing
that you will correct any errors that have a
tendency to Infer that I was connected with
same, I will ask that yon please insert an item
In your paper that will dispel or remove my
name in connection with this accident. All I
desire is a short item to this effect, and if there
is any charge for the same l will remit you on
receipt of the bill and also a copy of the paper.
Tours respectfully, James Bates.
