An Indignant Protest Prom the
“•hirt Waist Brigade."
Savannah, (it., Jimi- 2 —Kdi'or Morn
!zsp New: \V<? are ail ortho war
path, and nothing less than your
scalp will satisfy us. So you'd better
hunt a cyclone pit and pet into it, too,
and pull the top on to you, if you can. You
said—yes you did say—that the ••ladies'’
were leaving the city, and soon nothing
would be seen but tne ••shirt waist brie
ado." Fie! fie! fio! Mr. Editor Who
would have thought it of you? You. of
all men! And you even ‘"painted the
rose’ and added to the heinousness of your
offense by remarking that "the loungers
on Bull street would soon have nothing to
look at. - ’ Good gracious! Mr. Editor.
How dare you? And you a man ! Don't
your oars bum? especially the left one?
You’ll not have a “left'’ one soon, norany
other, for we’ll have both, as well as that
scalp of yours. I’m sure this very morn
ing I saw two cute little bias eyes looking
at me—even me—as I passed the
door of Y—l—ee's restaurant; and
I’m neither painfully young nor
exerutiatingly beautiful, and when I
smiled he murmured, “child-like and
bland,’’ "Melican look-ee like langcl!”
And, again, when “in my dailv walks
abroad” I pass the S—v—n h—se, the un
failing shirt-sleeve contingent gaze
so-so interestedly, that from pure
scare I walk with iny toes turned
in, and don’t got ’em straightened
out again until I get clean down to
I-—st—r’s 1 Truth, now. I wish you
could hear the clash of tongues and war
of words over your spicy item. I'm sure
your transgression would mete out its
own just punishment. Asa rule, lam
not particularly i artial to said “waists,”
but I went at once to purchase one, and
flung my banner to the breeze. Jesting
aside, Mr. Editor, please'tell me why a
workwoman (and I glory in the name)
may not be a “lady,” oven though for com
fort in her daily toil she wear a “shirt
waist?” All, me 1 Your idle jest brought
a sudden rush of tears to eyes so
tired of weeping, and gave one
added pang to a heart already
o’erladen. Let me tell you, and tell you
truly, there are so noble women in this
same dispised “shirtwaist brigade” as
are to be found in the rank and file of
fortune’s favorites. I know one, who a
few short months ago, was preparing to
flit.with the rest of her ilk.to the summer
resorts of fashion. That one to-day
passes thro’ your streets, earning her
daily bread as a stenographer and type
writer. Bereft at one fell blow of hus
band, home and fortune, she has entered
the ranks of the workwoman, and with
aching heart and bleeding pride, is bat
tling—l think bravely—with her hard
fate. She should have died, of course,
but, having skillful hands, a finished edu
cation and a level head, she took the lib
erty of using them. Has she forfeited
her claim to ladyhood? Mas, for the
living, tragedies that daily walk the
streets 1
1 tell you, Mr. Editor, you must rescind
that insinuation of yours. We claim to
be the geuuine article, even in our “shirt
waists,” and we’ll fight for our rights.
You’ll find .yourself presently where our
drummer friend did. May I recall the
incident? Or is it a “chestnut?” A well
known traveling man stopped over night
in a small South Carolina town. Near by
a protracted meeting was in. progress.
To pass away the evening ho wandered
into the church, settled himself comfort
ably, and after the fashion of ye drum
mer fell asleep. At the conclusion of a
rousing sermon the preacher called on
“all who wished to go to heaven to stand
up.” The congregation rose en masse,
except our innocent hero, who slept the
sleep of the just, unconscious that he was
being used to “point a moral and adorn a
tale.” Then “all who expected to go to hell
were requested to rise—if they dare.”
The noise of the vast congregation reseat
ing itself roused our traveler, and think
ing they were rising, he struggled to his
feet. A dead silence followed, as preacher
and people gazed at the daring reprobate.
Looking dazedly around he soon saw
something was amiss and with the in
imitable audacity of his class, he turned
to the preacher, and, rubbing his eyes,
sleepily remarked: “Well, parson, I don’t
exactly know what question ’tis we’ro
voting on, but it looks like you and me are
in a hopeless minority.” And that’s just
where you are and will remain—at least
all summer—unless you quickly make the
amende honorable to us, the insulted
“shirt waist brigade.” Onecvem.
A TRAMP OF 2,500 MILES.
Walked From Central America to
Texas in Six Months.
From the New York Times.
San Antonio, Tex., May 81.—Almost a
mental and physical wreck from sickness
and privation, a Swede named Gustave
Lockroom returned to the city to-day,
and was immediately sent to the city
hospital for treatment. He tells a pitiful
tale of his experience.
A little over a year ago he went to
South America, and at a place called Liv
ingston was given employment on a
banana plantation. He was made to work
t lu re steadily from early morning to kite
at night. Food was very scarce, and what
there was of it was unfit to eat. Soon he
became sick with malarial fever ;md was
seldom free from it. Although often in
capacitated by siekness, he was com
pelled to work in the sun on the planta
tion. He soon found that he could make
no money, as he was given his board only
for the work that he did. He saw that
ho was rapidly drifting from bad to worse
and he decided to leave the plantation.
He packed up a few clothes in a blanket
and tied it up with rope. The bundle he
slung over his back and started out for
Mexico. For days he walked in the hot
sun without seeing a man or house, but
finally he got into a healthier and more
populous country. At the end of three
months he reached Mexico. Ho was then
almost unable to get about. He spent a
few weeks with some countrymen in the
state of Chiapas, Mexico, and then con
tinued his overland journey lo this city,
making the total distance of 2.500 miles
from Central America in about six months.
Tommy—Papa, the papers the other day
said you were 'slated for a government job.’
what does that mean?
Papa iw ho failed to get the jobi—lt means,
tn v son, that 1 was already for some political
sponge to come along and wipe me out.
