THE GRZkUSI FEVER MEDICINE ON EARTH,
SAVANNAH, GA., Sept. 14th, 1893.
Dear Sir:
During a time like this, when there is fever and rumors of fever
everywhere, it is not out of place to tell you of certain precau
tions to take, in order to keep these fevers from constituting a
n enace do your life.
There are types of fever, such as "Swamp Fever” and malignant
types of Malarial Fever, that so closely resemble Yellow Fever as
to mislead the very best expert on earth. After death, the body
will turn that saffron color characteristic of the latter disease,
and, not infrequently, death is preceded by Black Vomit.
That these features of "Swamp Fever” are not more often observed
and commented upon by Southern practitioners, is explained by the
fact that most of the victims of the disease are negroes who live
in the low lands, tilling the rice fields or working in the phos
phate mines.
Owing to the dark skin of the negro it is difficult to note the
chief characteristics of the disease, but let a white man contract
the same fever and suspicion is at once attracted to the case.
This fever in itself is not to be dreaded. The chief danger lies
in having it miscalled Yellow Fever. Its treatment differs essen
tially from that of Yellow Fever.
A victim of Swamp Fever (victim is a good word here) who happens
to the misfortune of becoming a Yellow Fever "suspect” at once loses
ninety per cent, of his chances of recovery.
I once went into a little town in South Florida that had been
swept by the so-called scourge, Yellow Fever- Evidence of its rav
ages were apparent everywhere; many business men were dead, houses
closed, and a pall seem to hang over the little doomed town.
I went to the business place of a friend of mine, and found that
he too had succumbed to the disease. In response to inquiries, his
widow told the following story;
"We had been having a great deal of fever here. We had had a
long wet spell, followed by a very hot spell, which developed a
great deal of fever of a very malignant type. My husband sold the
people Johnson’s Chill and Fever Tonic, and it cured them every
time- There had not been a single death. Finally my husband was
taken with the disease, and at the same time, unfortunately for
us, attention was called to us. Then came an investigation, fol
lowed by quarantine. Then ensued fright and general panic. From
that time on the fever proved very fatal. We had been suffering
from this same type of fever for over a month and no one had died,
but now scarcely any survived. From then, on till frost, the fever
continued to kill. I believe that had we continued to give the peo
ple Johnson’s Tonic, that there would never have been a death.”
This is the story of a little town’s misfortune. Dengue Fever,
Swamp and Malarial Fever are all bad within themselves, but when
you call them YELLOW FEVER and treat them as Yellow Fever, the
chances are that the disease will prove alarmingly fatal.
What we need most in the South is not regulation of Yellow Fever
but regulation of YELLOW FEVER EXPERTS. The latter constitute a
far greater menace to our health and prosperity than the former.
Now to business. I have a simple, non-poisonous remedy that will
cure any disease of Malarial origin. Avery small quantity is all
sufficient to effect a cure. 10 doses is usually enough to perma
nently cure any form of fever. Now, I will sell you, on a guarantee
to cure every case of fever that you meet v/ith, and failing to cure
I will return your money. That I might interest every man‘who
should read this article in this great remedy, I will append a form
of order which I will gladly receive, and send you this great remedy
on terms that should convince you that I have exactly what I claim to have.
Read the order blank below and either copy it, or cut out, and
sign and mall to me at once.
Yours Truly,
C/^73.
If I fill your order on the terms below, it is I and not you that take the risk.

STARTLING RESI LTS.
Interesting Heading For Sulterers from
Malarial Diseases.
Johnson'* Chill and Fevor Tonio, the
Greatest Chill and Fever Medicine
on Earth No Cure. No Pay.
It i* not necessary to precede its ad
ministration with a cathartic of any char
acter. You can break into cases of Ma
larial Fevers of any type at any stage (a
desideratum to even physicians), where
pulse is 130 to 140. skin hot and dry, and
tongue loaded, without using Tr. Aconite,
Veratrum, or any any arterial sedative,
and after eighth or tenth dose (2 teaspoon
fuls every three hours) the patient will
break out in a profuse perspiration, then
you have but at once to change the dose
from 2 teaspoonfuls every three hours to
1 teaspoonful three times a day, to get the
tonic effect; dispensing with the usual
stereotyped resort to Quinine, Nux Vom.,
Arsenic and Iron. Returning strength
speedily follows, associated with a thin,
clear skin in lieu of a hitherto thick, sal
low one, with no “auream tinetus” (ring
ing in the ears), and other unpleasant ef
fects of Mercury, Quinine, Arsenic and
Iron. The remedy "par excellente” for
Measles; breaking them out, controlling
accompanying fever, and preventing re
lapses. A harmless, sure and speedy cure
for Chills and Fever, Bilous Fever, Bilous
Remittent, Intermittent, Swamp, Hemor
rhagic and Continued Fevers, Measles and
Neuralgia—downing in a short time the
most intense pain of Neuralgia (by re
moving the cause) when hypodermic, in
jections of ' 4 grain of Morphia fail. Re
storing to health perfectly, in an incredi
ble short space of time, the patient, with
no fear of return at the usual periods—
7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days. All done
by the timely use of this cheap, non-pois
onous Malarial Antidote—acting by re
moving the cause.
While we recognize the great curative
property of Quinine in Malaria, yet it is a
well known fact that this agent becomes
impotent after a long and continued use.
Johnson’s Chill, and Fever Tonic, or
Malarial Eliminant, is unsurpassed as
a restorative of health and vigor, shat
tered by over use of Quinine and other
powerful and poisonous remedies used in
Chills and Fevers. It quickly restores
the impaired digestion and appetite,
strengthens the tremulous nerves, and
opens the pores of dry skin. In contains
no Quinine or Alkaloids of Chiehona,
Strychnine, Arsenic, Veratrum Viride,
or Aconite; nor any ingredient calculated
to cause injury to the system by frequent,
constant or occasional use, as directed.
The Tonic gives the most wonderful re
lief to those suffering from the results of
Malarial poisons. If you are let down
mentally and physically, Johnson’s
Chill and Fever Tonic will give life,
strength and will power, and will not be
followed by any disagreeable re-action.
It is not a worthless “cure-all,” or a care
lessly prepared nostrum, but a scientific
combination, the result of years of special
study of the action of Malaria, and a spe
cial practice in treating the many dis
eases caused from Malaria.
Our Guarantee.
Remember that every merchant who
sells Johnson’s Chill and Fever Tonic will
sell it to you with a distinct understand
ing that one single 50-cent' bottle, will
cure any of the following diseases;
Chills and fever.
Bilious fever.
Swamp fever.
Hemorrhagic fever.
Typhoid fever.
Neuralgia.
Measles.
La grippe.
We claim for this remedy, that it is
one hundred times better than quinine,
ill the treatment of all malaria troubles.
It necessarily follows that the use of such
a remedy might be extended to numerous
other diseases than those we specify
above. We only reccommend it for the
troubles that we guarantee it to cure.
We have sought to distribute the medi
cine over the whole country, and have
pretty well succeeded in our undertaking
If, however, you want to test the efficacy
of this great medicine and cannot obtain
it from any dealer near you, write to me
enclosing 50 cents in stamps and I will
sent| you one bottle by mail. If the medi
cine does not do exactly what I claim it
will do, then write me and I will return
your stamps. We let the merchant and
the people be the sole judge of its merit.
When they say it fails to cure, we
return money without question.
I do not claim infallibility for the
Johnson's Tonic, but superiority over
every other known method of treating dis
eases of malarial origin. See your dealer
and try and obtain it from him. If he
has not got it in stock, then try and in
duce him to get some of it. Show him
the order blank on this page, in which he
assumes no possiole risk. All the risk is
taken by us. Respectfully,

I have never sold a chill romedy that ha*
given as great satisfaction as Johnson’s Chill
and Fever Tonle. Frequently. I would run
out and customers would wait four or five
days for Us arrival, preferring It to all others.

COUNTERFEITS.
The enviable reputation which John
son's Chill and Fever Tonic has won be
caur ■of its great merit, has induced un
scrupulous men to imitate in name, at
least, our great remedy, and thus secure
for themselves some of the fruits of ouir
labor. Certain proprietors of a fever
remedy who had been manufacturing
their product for 30 .years under a certain
name, have suddenly hit upon a happy
idea—they have changed the name of
itheir remedy, adopting four out of the
five words which have been used, til
now, exclusively by me to designate ray
remedy. It is just possible that I may
have no legal redress in this *case, but
that does uot make the act less dishonor
able. If a burglar enters your home and
strips it of your personal effects and
makes good his escape, there would be no
legal redress for your loss, but that does
not make the act of the burglar a strictly
honorable one.
HOW TO DETECT THE COUNTER
FEIT.
Bike all other spurious, or imitation
articles, there are easy rules for distin
gaishing these from the genuine. Mer
chants will please make note of these
distinguishing features:
Ist. Johnson’s Chill and Fever Tonio
!b always guaranteed to cure--The coun
terfeit bears no guarantee.
2d. Johnson’s Chill and Fever Tonic is
always sold on its merit, and is never
offered in connection with a premium,
or prize, or bribe. No brass watches, no
crockery, no Junk, no humbug, no fraud, is
ever associated with Johnson's Chill and
Fever Tonic.
How to treat a man who insults your
intelligence by trying'to sell you something
absolutely worths* by giving you some
thing; Let the man making the offer to
you state the value, in dollars and cents,
of his gift, or prize or bribe. If he says
that his premium is worth $lO, then In
sist upon not receiving the premium but
having a credit of $lO on the bill you pur
chase. If he is honest he will agree to
this. If you want to handle junk or
worthless goods, why not buy them right!
A. B. GIRARDEAU.
