cGriffin Call: Col. George I Jones in talking
gives the following infallible rem
edy which he - n vs has I*^• *ll tried and the
relief is almost instantaneous Place the pa
tient on a thin mattress and cover with a
quilt, then pour hot water over from the
throat down t > the feet and cold water on the
head. Perfect relief comes in a few minutes.
Covington Enterprise: The present city
authorities have exercised all their power in
beautifying the t wn and seeing that law and
order was maintained. They have been
economical in till their expenditures, but
have not hesitated to spend money w here it
was necessary to do so. They have enforced
the C'ity ordinances without nias or prejudice,
arid d‘ >erv‘ the gratitude and thanks of all
our citizens. 1h ir services have been given
gratis and no duty has been neglected.
Griffin Call: Tax Receiver Joshua Ham
mond is a man whose varacity is never qu's
tioned. and on his word he assured the ('all
yesterday that he Killed in one log 54 snakes,
a few days ago two old ones and 5J young,
nu asuring from six to twelve incites. The
snakes kilie i were of the copper belly variety
of moccasin and are of a poisonous tribe.
This simply beat - the record of snake killing
in this county, and the truth of it is not only
vouched for by Mr. liammond but by several
of his neighbors.
Columbus Enquirer-Sun: Milton Nobles,
who plays here on Friday night, says that
three men out of live to whom he is intro
duced. begin the conversation by informing
him that he was the first a 1 >r, and “The
Phoenix" the tirst play they ever saw. It has
become so monotonous now that when some
gray-headed rounder begins to spring it he
throws him off by saying. • It s astonishing
how many people get me confounded with my
father. And half of them believe it.
Albany Daily NV.-s: It is a fact that can
no! escape notice and but. elicit favorable
comment the colored citizens of Albany are
among th- most orderly to be found anywhere
in the state. This is upon the whole. Of
course, there is a class of the incorrigible
strpe that infests every community, but they
are being weeded out in short order. The
great majoiity of the nogroc* of Albany are of
the quiet, peaceable, ho! er and intellectual
kind, and they icdect credit upon the city in
which they live.
Rochelle Solid South: If there is anything
we admire tis ** 'possum and talers." The
tirst good citizen bringing The Solid South a
*possum will receive in return, a notice that
u defeated candidate would envy if referred
to his successful rival we 11 speak of your
public spirit, patriotism. generous disposi
tion. and how you are loved by your fellow
countrymen. The weight of the possum will
have considerable to do with the length and
tone of the notice. Don t all come at once.
Gwinnett Herald: Take Gwinnett county
as an example. We assert that there is
more old corn in the county than has been at
this season of the year since the war. There
ik a large \ top now made which will be ready
for gathering in thirty days, llie cotton
crop will be about an average yield. Wheat
au i oats are im re plentiful than for several
years. And while meat is remarkably scarce
and unreasonably high, that very fact has
impressed upon the people the necessity of
making their own supplies, and we do not
betjeve we will over estimate when we state
tliaTt there will be from fifty to seventy-five
per cent, more pork made than there was
last year.
Griffin Daily Times: Aunt Polly is dead
Amidst this i>ei*iod of storm and trouble, her
spirit flitted on Monday nUht to join the pro
00*1*1 ob of those other spirits which Kave Irer
BiSKie lore to read the past and foretell the
future, and Griffin mourns a loss which is ir
reparable. Fortunes must henceforth re
main untold and lost articles remain forever
in Umbo unless found by the usual natural
processes. For Aunt Polly was a noted fOS
tmne teller in all this region round about and
many there be who would swear to her art or
divination. No clairvoyant medium fake
was she. but a genuine old fashioned forume
teller, who trainod her undoubtedly accurate
information fr -m a greasy deck of cards
almost as old a> herself and plied a lucrative
trade aiuoriK tnc most intellixeut as well as
tho most uruorant classes. When a lover felt
tui.il-heai ted or u maid was too long in trtdng
wooed; when the gay and thoughtless coum
find nothing else to occupy their time, or the
spii and forsaken yearned for balm in Gilead;
and when lost articles failed to turn up after
the most vigorous search, the old negro wo
man's palm was crossed with silver and the
unseen and unknowable gave up Its secrets.
FLORIDA.
Gainesville Sun: Those who have been vio
lating the ordinance of the city of Gainesville
ifc reference to the discharging of firearms
Britain the corporate limits will have to ex
ercise a little more caution in the future than
than they have been doing in the last. The
police are determined to discover and arrest
every one guilty of the offense, and they will
spare no trouble in their endeavor to do so.
Pensacola Daily News: Never feed your
Kelffer pears to cattle without first chopping
into-mince meat.” A. V. Clubbs lost a tine
e„ow last week from choking on whole pears
taken hastily for dessert. There is great dan
ger in feeding turnips, potatoes, apples, etc.,
of round form without first boiling or cutting
up. The popular remedy is to use a swab like
a ram-rod to force the ‘ball beyond the
lodgment. Many of these p. irs Weigh over
uu avoirdupois pound and would surely choke
a yearling cannon.
'Florida Facts: The small politicians of
the state who are endeavoring to legislate
agdinst railroads, should go off somewhere
apd leftrn the first rules of progress. Hut for
railroads. Florida would to-day be nothing
lAit a howling w ilderness, compared to what
it is. fit only for habitation by the narrow
minded little politicians now clamoring for
destruction of railroads. Get out ol the
way if you can’t stand progress and civiliza
tion. Advancement mast come, and if it up-
the non progressive and auti immigra
tion people let them join the Indians and
‘move on.**
Tampa Times: In the mayor's court Henry
King was charged with disorderly conduct.
King proved to be rather an original charac
ter, and caused considerable amusement by
his statement in the defense. He said he
came to Tampa several days ago and met a
good looking girl. He fold the girl he was
looking fora wife anu the girl said she wanted
✓ a lord and master, so they decided to get bet
ter acquainted and if they suited each other
then they would get married, ''Cause you
know-, boss, good treatment brings about
love.*’ After he had known her several days
Ki ig borrowed the woman’s watch and failed
to return it the day he promised to do so.
Jacksonville Metropolis: While A. A. Me-
Gonegal. deputy city recorder, was sitting in
the council chamber, he turned to look out of
a south end window, when he espied just back
of his chair on the floor a snake about three
feet in length and two inches around the
largest ’.art of the body. From whence it
came and where going no one could tell. The
greatest mystery was how it got up into a
second story room of brick walls and iron
spurs. -Lonnie ' declares that no one
suspected of carrying snakes in their boots
had been around. After viewing the slimy
reptile he was secured alive and given to a
young man for a pet. It was a pretty snake,
being green and yellow striped.
St. Augustine News: The ship canal across
the Florida peninsula, which was suggested
and advocated so actively about a dozen
years ago, is again prominently before the
public. The western and southern congress
men are strongly n favor of the enterprise,
and a final survey will soon be made. The
canal will be about :*)> feel wide and about
lob miles in length, it will shorten the dis
tance from New Orleans to Liverpool i.WK)
miles, and vessels will save the dangerous
voyage around the Florida Keys and lia
na mas. with the high insurance rates now
exacted. The canal will link the west and
south, enabling the products of the former
suction to be shipped Europe with
out the expensive railway transportation
across the continent.

RAIN AND RAIN.
Farmers Picking Corn and Saving
Crab Grass Hay.
Candler, Fla., Sept. 14.—For the past
week it has rained here almost steady
night and day. The deficiency in the

to Heather Island on the Ocklawaha
river, to begin at once.

opens Oct. 1.
Farmers are busy gathering corn and
saving crab grass hay : but the extremely
wet weather is seriously Interfering. The
heavy rainfall is causing the oranges to
crack and drop badly.
FAILURE OF A SCHOOL PLAN.
Prostestants and Catholics to Attend
Separate Schools Hereafter. '
Faribault, Minn., Sept. 14.—Forma! an
nouncement of the failure cf the Fari
bault school plan, which during the past
eighteen months has been discussed from
Rome to San Francisco, was made yes
terday, when Father Conroy appeared
before the board of education and said
that Catholics could not longer consent
to the assignment of two Protestant
teachers to the Hill school, which had
be m a Catholic school up to the time of
thF H>ion. It is understood .the order

the accommodation of Protestant children.

wind, along Wall street toward .Main
street. Every building on either side of

sugar. Wholesalers are unable, they say,
to fill more than 10 per cent, of their or

larly exasperating just now on account of
the fruit canning and preserving season
being at its bight. The scarcity applies
only to the refined product.
