T. G. McAfee died Friday night at the
home of ,J. M Bishop on Poplar street,
Griffin. Mr. McAfee's death was caused by a
fall down a flight of stairs Sept. 21. At the
time of the accident Mr. M< Afeo had an acci
dent policy for SS.(XX). He leaves a wife and
daughter.
Adel News: Oh Thursday night of last

etc., on the railroad truck between here at and
Cecil. Luckily the engineer on the north
bound pas&euger discovered them in time to
avert an accident.

Burke county, was burned. Loss estimated
at $1,400. with no insurance. *1 he origin of

Near Holder's mill, in Warren county. Mon
day night last, two negroes, Peter Murray
and Cato Jones, became involved in a quarrel
which resulted in the former hurling a rock
with deadly aim at the latter, crushing his
skull. It was at tlrst thought that Jones could
not live, but the chances are in his favor now.
Hon. Ben. K. Russell has the appointment
of u cadi t from the Second congressional dis
trict to the Military Academy at West Point,
and he proposes to give the appointment to
the boy who is proven, by an examination of
the applicants, to be the most capu le. The
examination will be held in Albany next Sat
urday.
Sylvester Local: Hamp Hancock has a
four acre patch of long cotton that has played
him a rather curious prank. The cotton was
all planted from the same lot of seed, has re
ceived the same fertilizer aiul cultivation, .and
stalks over the entire field are over
shoulder high, vet the weed on one half of
the patch hua a good crop of fruit on it,
while the other half hus none at all.
Sylvester Local: The new county safe is
at this place in a box car. It is a7. Odo- pounder,
and is amply sufi emt to contain the county
records for several years to come, but it
seems that the ordinary has a white elephant
on his hands in connecting it with the court
house, and it looks as if a railroad will have
lo be built to the courthouse or a courthouse
built to the railroad in order to bring the two
together

fju&ed up rapidly during the past few weeks.
The iftilroads have about ns much freight
business now as they can handle, and are
forced to run extras. Two extra freight
trains left here yesterday for Savannah, and
we are informed that this will have to be
kept up in order to handle the business. This

weeks ago.

before Judge Underwood Wednesday for Mr.
James M. ttmilb charging him with an assault

In the county. From what we could learn of
the affair It appears that Mr. Smith and Mr.
Hurst hud a fight during which the former
drew a pistol and shot at the latter four times,
three ballb taking effect. One ball struck Mr.
Hurst in the thigh, another one tarried away
a portion of one of his ringers and another
made a slight flesh wound. None of the
wounds are considered serious.

puted suicide Friday by cutting his throat.

Brooksville Star: Last Saturday evening

Van ey Gold met on Broad street near the
Methodist church and had a difficulty over
some dealings they had hud. Gold wanted
the doctor to get down from his horse and
settle it ala Sullivan. But this the doctor
declined to do, and Gold determined to have a
•scrap ' anyway. The lie was passed, and
< I old reached for a stick, striking at the doc
tor with it. breaking it. He started for an
other stick, and the doctor, seeing that he
would have to defend himself, pulled his gun.
He shot, the ball, of course, taking no effect.
At this both;seemed to have business else
where aud they quietly and swiftly dis
persed. Gold was arraigned before Judge
Ramsey on Tuesday and was bound over in
the sum of SIOO bail to the next term of
coprt.
SOUTH CAROLINA.
The Sumter county dispensary is doing a
big business. On last Saturday $369 worth of
liquor was sold.
The Laurens county board of control has es
tablished n dispensary and elected G. M,
Langston dispenser.
The congregation of the M. E. Church.
South, of Sumter, have already commenced
to make preparations for entertaining confer
ence. which meets here in November.
The case against Deputy Marshal J. J. Pear
son for snooting and killing Ephraim Bela
was tried Wednesday in the court of general
sessions at Bennettsville. r l hq jury in a few
minutes rendered a verdict of not guilty.
The stables of Dr. A. J. China at
Sumter. were burned Wednesday
morning nt 3 o'clock. The loss
amounts to about $3 000 with S6OO insurance.
Three horses, a carriage, two buggies, har
ness, etc., were burned with the stables.
The Darlington Manufacturing Company,
one of the strongest cotton mills in the South,
received a large order Thursday from Shang
hai. China, for 1.000 bales of their standard
shirtings. This order will call for over twelve
carloads of goods, and is in itself sufficient to
run even so large a mill for some time.
Near Bamberg. Barnwell county, Thurs
day, G. Moye Dickinson, a very popular
young man. met with a serious accident
which may result in the loss of his left arm.
He was out bird hunting with Mr. William
Brabham, and while crossing a small stream
on a log Mr. Dickinson slipped and fell, his
gun was accidentally discharged, and the
whole loud of shot was emptied into bis left
arm between the wrist and elbow. The flesh
was terribly lacerated and one bone broken.
A death occurred at Sumter Tuesday morn
ing under peculiar circumstances Miss Lula
Trumble. of Kingville. a daughter of the lato
James D. Trumble. at onetime a division
superintendent of *he South Carolina railway,
loft home on Monday afternoon to visit Mrs.
W. M. DeLorme of Sumter. Soon after
boarding the evening train at Eastovor she
was seized with congestion of the brain and
was unconscious from that time until her
death, which occurred at 1 a. m . Tuesday.
Drs. Dowtard and Mood attended her. but
could do nothing for her. Her brother was
telegraphed for and arrived on the 11:40 train
Monday night. The remains were carried to
Eastover on Tuesday morning.
The first branch of the Woman's Auxiliary
Association to le formed in the south was es
tablished at Columbia Friday chiefly through
the efforts of Mrs Charles E. Kirk. The pur
pose of the asi-o intion is to send men to take
the Keeley treatment and get a safe cure
from the evil of drink. The association hus
started out under the most flattering auspi
cies and the interest shown by personal at
tendance and letter indicates that the Keeley
treatment is recognized as the proper medi
um for saving drunkards, and that the com
bined work of women is the best way to get
men to take the course. The officers elected
are: Mrs. Chtis. E. Kirk, president; Mrs. F.
W. McMaster. vice president; Mrs. John Mil
ler. recording secretary; Miss Maggie Klou,
corresponding secretary ; Mrs. L. G. Corbett,

and life mem ership at $25. The association
will meet again next Wednesday, when busi
ness will 1 e organized and work begun.
Senator Stewart of Nevada, has discovered
in a blind beggar in Washington a fellow
miner of thirty live years ago. and has
cheered the mendicant by dropping an oc

whenever he passes.
