FIVE COLD IN DEATH.
Xba Accident at the Trestle Worse
Than First Deported.
Dunkirk, N. Y., Dec. 16.—Five people
were Killed and sis injured by the disaster
on the Western New York and Pennsyl
vania Railroad, three miles east of this
city.last night. The dead are Jesse Hodge,
ronductor; William E. McCain, baggage
man: Oscar Porter, his mother. Mrs. J.
porter, of Brooklyn, and Georgo
Kvman. of Frcedonia.
The train went through a trestle that
spans Herricks creek. Theereek is a harm
less little stream, but owing to heavy rains
rose rapidly and poured down a flood of
angry waters which washed out the sup
ports of the trestle. When the ill-fated
train dashed on tho structure, running
forty miles an hour the trestle gave way.
and the cars crashed into the gorge. The
engine had crossed the bridge when it
pave way. The tender broke its coupling
and, with the cars, fell twenty-five feet
into tho rushing torrent beneath.
POLICE PREVENT A DUEL.
Virginia’s Senatorial Election at the
Bottom of the Trouble.
Richmond, Va., Deo. 16.-—W. A. Daniel
and P. C. Cabels, two prominent young
society men, were arrested here to-night
on the charge of being about to break the
peace. The warrant did not specify how
they proposed to engage in combat, but it
is believed the intention was to meet on
"the field of honor.” The cause of tho
difficulty has been kept quiet, but it is be
lieved to have grown out of a discussion
of the fact that J. Alston Cabels voted for
Thomas S. Martin for United States sen
ator, when certain of his constituents in
this city thought that ho would vote for
Gen. I.ee. The Messrs. Cabels are broth
ers. The would-be belligerents were
bailed for their appearance before the
police court monday morning.
