of Macon s new hospital Over $4,000 has al
ready teen paid in cash, and there will be no
difficulty to obtain the letlance of the money

to erect the hospital.
The governor has issued an order offering a
reward of $)5<J each for the murderers of Jim
Dickson and Bill Richardson. The order
Cites that on Oct. 17 Dickson and Richardson
were taken from jail in North and “murdered
by a body of disguised men."
The Bank of Southwestern Georgia, of
Americus. held its annual meeting Wednes
day. re-electing its old board or directors and
Officers: Maj M. Speer, president; J. W.
Wheatley, vice president; W. H. C. Dudley,
cashier, and A. W. Smith, Assistant.
Throe trunks, surrounded by blood stains on
the floor, have been found in a house on Elm
street at Macon. Three weeks ago a woman
named Smith moved out of the house at
night, and her neighbors do not know what
became of her. Ihe police are Investigating
the case.

Raftway at Augusta, have petitioned Supt.
D\erlor an increase of pav. The boys now
receive SO cents a day. and ask that their
wages lie increased to 70 i ents a day. Supt.
Dyer sars he has hired the boys to reduce
expenses and he will be compelled to decline
the request.

Dr. R. S. Rust, a Cincinnati capaitalist now
In Americus. expresses astonishment at the
prosperity which he seas prevailing in the
south, and In Southwestern Georgia in par
tlcular. He says that the people here have
nothing to complain of in the way of h ird
times, in comparison with the north and
west, where thousands of able-bodied men
are almost starving ami can get no work.

J. C. Roney In the presidency, the latter re
tiring because of his Incumbency of the Arnor
lcus postoffice.
The residence of H. A. Merry, at Berzella,
In Columbia county, was entered Tuesday
night by a negro assuming the name of Mor
gan T. Limit. Mr. Merry was aroused by |he
noise In the house. On getting up he dlaoSv
ered the man. Mr. Merry reached for his
gun. The negro attempted to escape by a
window. As he sprang out Mr. Merry fired
on him twice. The first shot took effect in
the lower part of his right leg. The second
missed him. The negro crawled off and was
not captured until Wednesday morning. He
was found some distance from the house.
John Banks and Will Strickland were to
gether In Spalding, one with a gun. the other
with a pistol. The aub.e t of killing was
brought up. Banks had the pistol and re
marked that he could shoot quicker and fas
ter than a man with a gun. Strickland
thought not. and threw his gun in position,
wnen, It Is claimed. Banks playfully knocked
It aside and pointing his pistol at Strickland,
it went off accidently and killed him. The
young men belonged to well known families
Strickland is the only son of a widowed
mother, his father having commuted suicide
sffme time ago.
On Saturday, Jan. 6. the city of Bainbrldge
held an election for a mayor and six aider
men, which resulted in the election of the fol
lowing named gentlemen without opposition:

G.F. Westmoreland, J. D. Harrell, H. Nuss
bnum W. W. Right, H. B. Ehrlich and D. A.
Russell. On Monday night last the new
mayor and aldermen were Installed and
eleoted the following as city officers to servo
for the ensuing year: For city clerk, B.
Nussbaum; city treasurer, C. L. Harrell;
city marshal, E. H. Smart: Deputy marshal.
W. W. Bates; Policeman Clark Reed.
The Polar Ice Company, of Augusta, has
closed down, and only a watchman is em
ployed there now to guard over the ptoperty.
The prorerty Is to be sold at public sale the
first Tue sday in F'ebruary for state and county
taxes, also for two years' water rent due the
city. The factory is valuable property, situ
ated on the second level of the canal, between
Marbury and Koilock streets. The company
sustained a severe loss several years ago.
when the foundation of the raceway caved In,
from which it has never recovered. The cost
to repair the damages amounted to about $15,-
000, but now it is in fine condition and affords
a splendid mill site.
Monroe News: Romo days since some
hands on J. P. Rockmore s place near Logan
vllle, in removing a decayed trunk of a large
tree, made an interesting fine. Imbedded in
the leaves and mold was a flask partly fllled
with a liquid which was found t q be whisky.
The print of leaves was stamped upon thu
glass bottle, and the cork was covered with
earth mold. The peculiar kind of flask led to
Inquiry about the probable length of time the
bottle of whisky had lain in its hiding place.
K.. M. Brand was positive that no flasks of
that description had been sold at Loganvllle
since the war, and the time-corroded bottle
seems to bear out the reasonableness of the
opinion that the whisky had been under the
log some thirty years.
Ishmael Corbin, colored, was killed Satur
day night by another negro near Walden,
eight miles from Macon. The killing oc
curred at a frolic on the Sparks plantation
and as usual, a woman was at the bottom of
It. Ishmael and the other man had some
words about the aßair. which, it appears, had
been brewing between them for some time,
and the result was as stated. Corbiu being
shot twice by his antagonist, once In the neck
and again through the temple, the latter of
which wounds killed him almost Instantly.
The negroes of the community are much
worked up over the allair Two men are
locked up in Ferry jail, suspected of having
done the murder, but no positive evidence
has been adduced yet.
Dan Dickerson, colored, a school teacher,
at Millen. charged with sending an obscene
letter through the mails, was on trial at Au
gusta Wednesday before Judge Speer in the
United States circuit court The letter was
produced by District Attorney Gary and was
read 10 the court and jury. That It was one
of the vilest compositions of Its kind that
has ever been brought Into the court in Au
gusta was the unanimous decision of all of
the court officials and the spectators who
heard it read. With but little deliberation
the jury returned a verdict of guilty and
Judge Speer placed a fine ol frJOO and cost of
court upon the defendant. In case Dicker
son Is unable to pay the line placed upon him
he will be resentenced by the court and made
to serve a term
Macon Teligraph: Eighteen able bodied
strong. healthy, stall fed tramps were turned
loose on the community yesterday morning.
About two wicks ago Sheriff Westcott and a
posse went down to the water works p imping
atation at Waterville. two miles below the
city, and arrested eighteen tramps who bad
taken possession of the pumping station and
intimidated the employes there to such an
extent that they were powerless to drive
them away, and for fear of personal vloleuoe
were afraid to even remonstrate with them
Last Saturday the tramps were carried before
.Judge ltoss and on waiving indictment by the
grand jnry and trial by jary at the advice of an
attorney they were re-committed to jail on the
charge of trespass and their cases set for
Wednesday. Tuesday afternoon five of them
were called before Judge Ross, but upon sat
isfying the court that they had not received
notice not to enter the premises of the water
company their cases were nol prosed and j
they were set at liberty. Wednesday morn- i
lng the balance of them were carried Into
court for trial, which resulted the same as
with the other rive. Before dismissing the
tramps Judge Ross warned them against go
ing buck to the pumping station and Im
pressed upon them tin* fact that they had re
ceived personal notice to stay away.

A rowdy hit a Salvation Army drummer at
Jacksonville Wednesday and It cost him sl6

Six hundred trunks were unloaded from the
spectaldrain which arrived at St. Augustine
Sunday bringing the Ponce de Leon help.
J. H. McKinne. of Marianna applicant for
surveyor general of the state, has stated pub
licly that he has withdrawn from the race and
indorsed W. H. Milton, Jr., as applicant for
the offloe.
The confederate veterans Dropose haying a

jor general in the confederate service, and
other distinguished orators have been invited
to make addresses.
A petition was received at Ocala Wednes
day. signed by every memt er of the bar In
Tampa, and requesting the congress of the
United States to establish a term of the
United States court in Ocaln.
In the colored Knights of Labor case. Judge
Barnes, in the circuit court at Pensacola.
Wednesday, dissolved the injunction against
Master Workman John D. Robinson, and
Robinson will uow hold the office.
In the county criminal court at Orlando
Wednesday.‘thegase of W. S. Williams, for
assault upon Ed Frost, came on for trial. The
testimony showed that Frost was the ag
gressor and struck the first blow The jury
was out but a few minutes—less than half an
hour—when a verdict was brought in of not
guilty.
Among the many novelties in the new elec
tric light System of the Hotel Ponce de Leon
in St Augustine, are forty marble lined panel
boards at different points in the building,
ea h of which contains an original switching
device, by which every light in the hotel can
be i ontrnllcd directly by the electrician In
charge. 1 hese are not only an additional safe
guard against tiro, but save the guests much
annoyance.
Lust Sunday afternoon Mrs. Fred L.
Robertson, of lJroriksvUlo. went to the wood
room at the roar of her residence after some
kindling, and had the misfortune to step on a
loose board that gave away under her weight,
thro wing her violently against the door casing
and severely Injuring, if not breaking her
right arm at the shoulder. She was so badly
bruised and shaken up that she has been con
fined to her bed since.
Many of Senator Call's friends In Marion
county, hearing of his opposition to the con
firmation of Hon. George W. Wilson, of Or
ange Luke, as collector of internal revenue,
telegraphed the senator requesting that his
opposition should cease and it is understood
he wired a reply to the effect that he consid
ered Wilson a corporation man. and that he
would, at every opportunity, light the cor
porations. People In Ocala Cos not doubt but
that Wilson will be confirmed.
In a contest between the city authorities
and the Pensacola Gas Company about the
erection of certain lumps on the streets under
the company's contract. Judge Barnes, of the
Circuit court, lately made a decree in favor of
the city. The gas company took an appeal to
the supremo court and asked for an order to
stay the operation of the decree until the ap
peal was decided. Judge Barnes refused to
grant the stay, but the supreme court has
overruled him and ordered that a supersedeas
be Issued staying the decree until the appeal
is heard.
H. A. Abercromby was the recipient of a
fine lot of specimens of minerals from the va
rious state commissioners at the world's fair
while at Chicago with the Orange county car.

of California and Washington gold quartz,
Colors o onyx, stalactites from the Mnm
monthGave ol Wyoming. Hot Springs dia
monds, mica Irani California, lead ore from
Galena. 111., and the state of Washington,
Iron ore from four different states, and a num
ber of other interesting articles taken from
the state buildings in Jackson Park. They
are now in the Orange county car waiting the
selection of a suitable place for their proper
display.
The Alabama Coal Company’s wharf at the
foot of Hogan street, at Jacksonville, gave
way Wednesday. Twenty-five tons of coal
and five men were carried Into the river. One
man by the name of Lot Mumphrev. colored,
is still missing and Is supposed to be burled
In the wreck. The other men who were on the
dock at the time were Robert Mathews. Joe
Dempsey. S K. Schrewsbury and George
Mumphrey. all colored. Mathews was badly
cut In the back of the heud. S. K. Hebrews
bury succeeded in getting out uninjured. Joe
Dempsey caught on the edge of the dock
when the accident occurred. He was hurt
badly by the coal, but held on firmly, thus es
caping death. George Mumphrey. a cousin of
the dead man. was badly hurt In the fore
head, and Ills wounds are thoaght to be so
rlous.
At Live Oak Wednesday the jury of inquest
in the murder ease of H. J. Willis on Satur
day night last finished their labors and ren
dered a verdict that he was killed by Berry
F. Bird as principal and Wily Bird. W. J.
Hurst, James McGuire and John J. Robinson
as accessories. The parties are highly con
nected and are among the most prominent
people of the county. No one, not even the
jury, believed the parties who committed the
murder went thero for that purpose, but sim
ply killed the mau to keep from being prose
cuted for a misdemeanor. Willis wus em
ployed by the town to imprison stray cattle.
He had taken up some belonging to the above
parties and It is supposed that they wont to
the liound to forcibly release the cattle. When
Willis resisted them it is supposed they
killed him.
