J W. Clapp on trial at Augusta, charged

acquitted Saturday.
J. S. Wright, of Brunswick, has deter
mined to sell ont his stock and retire from the
•lothing and furnishing business.
There was a safe robbery in Parrott one
night last week, the safe of Cook being
broken open and robbed of #6OO or ¥7OO.
The firm of Pate McKenzie & Cos . of Cor
dele no longer exists. I ust Wednesday their
stock of goods was bought by Pate &
Pound.
The crial of W. L. Hargrove for assault
with intent to murder came off in Baldwin
superior court Wednesday, and Mr. Hargrove
was quickly acquitted.
Offlaals at the department of agriculture
say that the sales of fertilizers wilt be as
large as last year. The sales last year were
About 320.000 tons, the largest on record.
AtElberton. Saturday. Ben Tillman. Jr.,
Son of Gov. Tillman, snot and perhaps fatally
wounded his cousin. Sam Stark. They were
■booting at a target, and Tillman's aim was
bad.
The drv goods and grocery house of O S.
Lee. in Thomson was closed Saturday upon
• petition of the 0 editors. The business has
bean placed in the hands of Sheriff Hawes as
receiver.
The Cordele cooperage works is anew en
terprise that will soon be in working order in
Oordele. Henry Elsom will be president and
general manager About twenty hands will
its employed and the pay roll will be 1200 a
week.
Several weeks ago. on the petition of a se
cured creditor Judge C. C. Smith appointed
Judge U. V. Whipple temporary receiver of
the Oordele Hotel Company. The cause was
heard last Saturday at Hawkmsvllle. and as
the company showed that it was perfectly
solvent the receiver was dismissed.
Jesse Dick -ns. a young white man. who
stabld Arnold Scharnitzsky to death at Au
gusts a year ago. was put on trial yesterday.
Dickens escaped and remained awav until
last New Year s day. when he was captured
up In Hancock county. The court appointed
Du G. Fogarty to defend the prisoner

Fork Valley has a freak in the person of a
Jealous negro husband. Every time he leaves
home he takes a wheelbarrow of sand, pours
it over the sidewalk in front of his steps,
takes a broom and walking backwards
■weeps it smooth so he can tell by the tracks
in the sand whether any other man has been
to see his family during his absence.
Griffin News: John Mott and Miss Irene,
his daughter, were in the city Friday night on
their wav to their home in Goggaosvlllo from
a visit to Southwest Georgia coming by way
of Columhus. Mr Mott denies as a tissue of
falsehoods the story recently printed that his
daughter was about to elope with a Mr. John
son, of Macon. And was prevented by him.
He says that she never thought of marrying
the man. and that she told him so.
The annual election for officers of the Bank
ol Waynesboro, last Monday, resulted In a re
election of the former officers with one excep
tion. They now stand as follows: President.
W. A. Wilkins; vice president. R. C. Neely:
cashier, W. E Jones: directors. W. A. Wil
kins, K. C. Neely, W. E. Jones. P. L. Corker.
E. H. Callaway and John F. McElmurrav,
Ospt. John F. McElmurray was the newly
elected member of the board of directors.
Americus Times Recorder: A lady residing
on Eelder street heard a commotion among
the chickens under the house yesterday morn
lng. and fearing that a hog had attacked
them, went out to investigate matters.
Crawling under the house, she went to where
the chickens were, and was surprised and
frightened to find a big fat possum in their
midst. Her husband came to her assistance
and captured the possum, which graced
their table Sunday.
Atlanta Journal: On the same day that
Lewis Redwine was sentenced to six years in
the penitentiary for stealing *IOO,OOO. a young
man was sentenced to live years tn tho pom
tentiary for stealing *6O One hud emboizled
the funds of a big banking institution: the
other had crawled into the Journal otfice at
night and rilled the cash drawer: one Is to be
a clerk in the prison keeper s otfice; the other
Is straining his muscles and blistering his
hands with hard labor.
Brunswick Times: A rumor came to the
city Saturday morning that Cornett and
Mitchell, with their hackers and the officials
of the Duval Oluh were at Everett City, look
ing out lor a site for the tight in Glynn
county. An arrival from that place yester
day stated that there was a crowd of smartly
dressed strangers up there looking at the
place. The local sporting element was at
once thrown Into commotion hy the report,
but it was learned in the day that the story
was a meaningless hoax.
Barnesrllle Home Journal: The stock
holders of the factory held Its anuual meet
ing Wednesday. The reports of the officers
showed a net earning of *l2 000. besides acom
mlssion of $6 (WO paid for the handling of the
products of the mill. There has been some
kicking about this large commission, but rue
of the sto.kholders stated to the Home
Journal that it was being done .01 per cent,
cheaper than they had ever been offered, be
sides guaranteeing every account.
Augusta Herald: Illustrative of the easy
way in which the uneduc ited negroes shuttle
oil ties matrimonial, this story is told. An
old mamma who is employed as cook hy a
downtown lady fell in a reminiscent mood,
the other day. and was relating to some young
people experiences of her past lifo, when one
of them asked her how often she had been
married. "Laws, honey." she responded.
“Use got fore husbuns sum of dem livin' and
sum of demded.” Unable to endure this, the
listeners speedily fled, and when out of hear
ing of the muchlv married woman gave vent
to explosions of laughter.
S. G. Rigsby, a white man. at Thomasville,
was arrested Saturday night on a warrant
sworn out by Mayor Hopkius charging him
with forgery. He presented a check on the
Citizens Hanking and Trust Company hear
ing the signature. 3 “Charley Chapin. ' to
several merchants and tried to get it cashed.
One of the gentlemen to whom the check was
presented showed it to Mayor hopkius, who
is familiar with Mr C hapin s signature, and
he pronounced it a forgery and had the man
arrested. The forgery is a very crude piece
of work. Rigsby told two o three stones
about how he came In possession of the check.
Bob Crump, the courteous and polite bar
tender at the club, did an heroic act Saturday
afternoon in wnich he saved the life of ail
aged white lady. The lady wis crossing
Broad street at the Intersection of Campbell,
when a gentieinan with a double team came
driving through Campbell street at a rapid
gait. '1 he lady was too feeble -o run even
walk fast, and Bob. who was standing at the
corner, observing the imminent peril of the
lady, rushed before lhs horses, lifted the
lady up and carried her to safety. He had a
close call from being knocked clown himself
and tramnled under the horses feet. The

vented a serious accident. Bob was highly
praised for his bravery and he IS entitled to
to be called a hero.
Quitman Free Press: There are now only
two schools in Quitman which will be paid
from the publi • school fund, ’These are Ihe
Quitman graded school and the colored school
at Court Street Academy. As instructed by
the state school commissioner, the county
school commissioner will, in the future, pay
oyer o the 1 oard of trustees of tho Quitman
graded school all of the public
money to which the town is enitled.

out by the trustees of that school in operating
the two schools above named Under ibis
system there are a number of smaller private

The regular annual meeting of the stock
holders of the Georgia Home Insurance Com
pany was held at its office at Columbus .Sat
urday. Its president, J. Rhodes Browne, sub
mitted his report of the condition of the com
pany. Ihe financial statement showed net
assets In excess of one year ago—a condition
very gratifying to the stockholders During
the year just past *36,000 In cash dividends
have been paid to the stockholders of the
company. The old *oard of directors was
unanimously re-elected, to-wit: J. Rhodes
Browne. S j. Carter. K. J. Rankin, Ci. M.
Williams L. H. Chappell. V. N. Curtis and
Rhodes Brown*. At a meeting of the board
of directors held subsetuently, the present
officers of the company were unanimously re
elected. to wit: J Rhodes Browne, president:
if. C. Coart. secretary; William Slade, treas
urer.
Maj. Black, of the Augusta district, called
on the Secretary of War Saturday and urved
the establishment of the proposed southern
department of the army at Aujiiin instead
of Atlanta. The major, however, found that
Gen. Gherman and en. Hancock had recom
mended the establishment of such a depart
ment at Atlanta several years ago. and ien.
Schofield has recently added his recommen
dation. Maj. Black has. therefore practi
cally abandoned hope of getting it at Augusta.
He thinks it i ertain that it will go to Atlanta
in the near future. Maj. Black is also work
ing to get the new southern prison estat>
lis nod at Augusta. Secretary Smith. Col-
Livmgston arid the two senators are. how
ever. p ish.ng for this to le located at At
lanta, and as Secretary Smith has one of two
votes required to locate -it, Atlanta will al
most c* rtainly get it.
The Rome rolling mill property was sold
Friday at receiver s sale, .lohn H. Reynolds,
the receiver, acting in the capacity of auc
tioneer. The bondholders were present, and
it was considered a sure thing that they
would buy in the property to cover the bonds
amounting to §40.000. But they did not. and
the property was sold at the ridiculously low
figure of §91790. It was fought hy Harper
Hamilton. The bidding was never exciting.
Capt. r-euy started it off with *IOO which Mr.
Hamilton raised to Sl.ooo. Then the bond
holders took a hand, but they did not hold it
very long. They hardly ever raised Mr. Ham
ilton s bid over #2o. and only then after long
de:avs. Their last bid was *2.750. when they
notified Mr Reynolds they were through It
was an unexpected turn of affairs, and by it
Mr. Hamilton got the property, valued var
iously from S3O.OOCf to §6J.OtO at a price that
made men wonder when they realized it.
There was all sorts of talk about it being bid
in for other )*arties. but when seen Mr. Ham
ilton had little to say. except that he was sur
prised when it was knocked down to him at
that figure.
Carrollton Times: The exocutor of the es
tate of Mrs Hammock who recently died in
this city, is hunting for some of her money.
It is known that she had considerable money
at the time of her death about her house, but
since it has not been found. Some thought
she had buried ft somewhere about her late
premises, aud upon this suggestion the ex
ecutor went to work and carefully examined
two acres of ground without success. He now
comes forward in the card printed below, re
questing that those who have or know any
thing of the money to notify him. Here is his
card: “Carroll County limes: A great
many people think that Mrs. Susan Ham
mock, who died recently, had buried a consid
erable sum of gold. I went, as the ex
ecutor. with disinterested witnesses oh
two occasions and m ade search but found no
thing. I did so under the sanction and advice
of the ordinary. From her cotton bills and
other payments, compared with what she paid
out, this fall she ought to have left consider
able money, in fact, had It under her pillow
while sick. It is reported that she confided
her secret to someone. and told them to sav
nothing till her will was found and tiled with
the ordinary, and then to turn It over to him.
Her will has been duly filed. If any tody
knows anything or is keeping the money until
the proper time, it has come, and I will say to
them that they will not only be justified in
turning It over to the ordinary, but they will
be-handsoraely paid for so doing or giving any
Information that will lead to it A thief would
keep all of it. This is only addressed to hon
est people, G. W. Morrell, Executor.'’

Lakeland is shipping large quantities of
strawoerries, and has teen for some time
past.
John A. Morris, of Louisiana lottery noto
riety. has changed his winter residence from
New Orleans to Tampa.
A little colored child was burned to death at
Quincy Monday evening. It was tho baby ol
John Mills and about 3 years old.

Feb. 15.
A largo phosphate plant Is about to be
erected near Mr. Fortner s place, about two
miles south of Hone Valley, in Polk lo inty

of the enterprise.
The Owl Cigar Company, of Quincy, has
purchased the entire packing of M. L. Floyd,
general manager for Schrader A Bon. The
company will not buy any of the crop of 18J3
tobacco, since their purchase of the Floyd
packing.
Two white men were traveling west, and.
when within two miles of Klvdr Junction,
were assaulted by two negro men, who ordered
them to bold up their hands. Ihe white men
replied that they had nothing, when the
negroes jumped on them and brutally beat
one of them with brass knucks. The other
white man ran off with their bundles.
Orange City Times: Friday morning two
gentlemen took the train in front of the post
office for the junction. As the train stopped
at the station they got off and asked
for tickets. Mr. Boyer, the agent, told them
there was no time to get tickets and they
boarded the train again About half wav to
the junctiou the conductor called for t ickets
they offered the regular fare 15 cents, the
conductor said they must pay 30 oonts This
thoy refused to do. the train was stopped and
they were put off. The gentlemen say they
have plenty of witnesses and will bring suit
for damages.
The St. Louis Engineering Company hs
agreed to give the sum of $11)0,001 to build an
electric street railway from North Beach to
Moultrie, provided that *25.000 is raised in St.
Augustine. To this end Capt. Adolphus
I’acettl offers to head this list with *5,000 lu
cash, and further a rees to give four house
lots at North Beach to evdry person subscrib
ing *I.OOO. Phis is extremely generous of
Capt Pacetti and should readily no taken ad
vantage of. it is understood that the pro
moters of the St. Augustine Electric railway
hold an option on the charter of the North
Beach railway, which includes 180 acres of
land at North B< a h with the pavilion and
other buildings standing thereon.
Walter West a carpenter. Is reported to
have been held up at Tampa Friday night
and robbed ot i2> after being stabbed in the
left arm. West’s wife informed Sheriff
Spencer. She said she received the money
in a letter from her husl ami s relatives in
England Friday night, and meeting her hus
band gave it to him They parted company
at a store and she went home. West started
home soon after and was held up by two
white men. one of whom stabbed him in the
armr the other caught him from behind.
Then the first man went through him. West
s. reamed when stabl ed, and a man named
Brown came up. The highwayman saw him
and tied. The place of attack is lonely and
isolated, and the authorities are investigating
the case.
Tampa Times: Some time ago a guest of
one of our hotels sent oid Mrs Marsh to the
Southern Express company s office with an
order to the express lueat to pay Mrs. Marsh
*>o (.03 at once. The simple old woman took
it to the express office believing as she
always does that the money was due her.
Clyde Glenn, the polite and manly agent,
took tho note, wrote across its back and sent
Mrs. Marsh with it to the writer. When the
man opened the note 110 found tho express
agent had Indorsed it thus: Will you not
try in the future to conduct vourself as a gen
tleman, remembering that your mother is or
will he an old woman- The thoughtless
joker took the note to the express office

hand said, "I thank you for that rebuke
