eourt is apparent. It is provable that Judge
C. C. Smith of the Oconee circuit will preside.
Judge Jenkins having lllied the former's ap

On Monday of last week K. H. Linder and
wife, who lived about four miles east of Dub
lin, left their home to visit a neighbor. Re
turning they found that the house had been
entered and a good many valuable ankles
were missing. A negro boy who had worked
on the place was also missing.
The work of monni the pile driving ma
chinery, of the Midule i.eergia and Atlantic
railroad, from the Alcova river to the trestle
across Dried Indian creek, in Newton county,
was accomplished on Wednesday. It was a
bard job to move it. as it had to be dragged
along the road by steam power.
Henry Jones, the colored man who was in
jured at the cotton seed oil mill at Augusta
on Friday. Jan 12. died Monday. Jones was
oiling the machinery when. In some way. he
was caught in the belting and hurled to the
Boor below. It was not at urst thought that
his injuries were of a serious chaiacter, Lut
complications set in that could not be con
trolled.
J. L. Cowart Jr . of Dublin, lost hia resi
dence by hre a few days ago. Nearly all of
the furniture was saved. The house was

A committee of citizens, headed hr Patrick
Walsh. P. G. Durum and W. A. Latimer, ap
peared before the city council of Augusta
Monday night and advocated the city buying
the exposition building and r ends to con
vert them nto o handsojne park. The Expo
sition compau., offered io se.. ,„e property to
the city for 175.030 on easy terms. Ihe coun
cil did not discuss the question and took no
action other than to refer the matter to the
committee of the whole.
Both of the murder cases that were arranged
for trial in the R ho end milv superior
court for this week have been cuntinued.
Neither of the cases w ill now > heard until
the next regular term of the court, which will
meet on the third Monday in April. One is
the case of J esse Dickens, the young white
boy who killed Arnold SchniU’-ky. The other
Is the case of Frank Goins, who is accused of
having murdered his infant, shortly after the
ba: y's birth, by beating it over the head with
a hammer.
The handsome railroad building at Smith
ville. formerly used as the southwestern
railroad s division headquarters was burned
Monday morning at 5 o'clock. Nothing in the
upper story was saved. It contained all the
records of the bridge supervisor and tele*
graph office. At one time the busin-ss por
tion of the town was in great danger, and it
was only by the greatest effort that the freight
depot and the McAfee house were saved, 'the
latter caught on fire one lime. The fire origi
nated from an imperfect arrangement of the
fireplace. The railroad company has 85.000
insurance on the building, and the officials
nay that in all probability anew building will
be erected at once.
The passengers on the Richmond and Dan
ville and the Cumberland Gap trains Satur
day afternoon were the spectators of a novel
nd exciting race. For several miles the
South Carolina and Richmond ami Danville
lines run parallel wlthlu a short distance of
each other, and the trains on the roads left
Augusta at the same time. Little bv little
each engineer would put on more steam to
outstrip his rival, until, at last, both were
moving along over the smooth tracks at a rate
that far distanced the record of the Nancy
Hanks. The race was a heated one, but at
last, the Richmond and Danville triumphed;
and. amidst cheers from the passengers, she
pulled away and left the Gap train, crew and
passengers to console themselves as best they
could.
The People's party, of Laurens county held
a meeting on Saturday. Dec. 13. The meet
ing was called to order with A. J Hilbun in
the chair. J. B. Perry’s name was put in
nomination as permanent chairman and he
was unanimously elected. O. J. Hilliard was
elected permanent te retary. The following
resolution was unanimously udouted "He
oolved T hat, the mem be) a of ihe People's
party meet in their respective districts on the
first Wednesday in February to select live ex
ecutive committee men on the Thomas E.
Watson plan, and also that the chairmen of
the district committees of the several dis
tricts meet In Dublin on the first Saturday In
February to discuss m (.tiers of importance
and outline the general work of the party for
another year."

W. T. Cox died at Ocala Monday of con
sumption. He was 32 years old and a prom- )

mains were sent to his old home.
There is a practical chemist at Winter Park
who has a process by which he can in a few

Jacksonville Citizen reports that Sam Ellis, j
representing a candy manufacturer of At :
lanta. was pelted with eggs on the streets of
that city Saturday and then cowhided. It
was charged that he had ieen too familiar
with a merchant s 12 year old daughter.
Mrs. W. M. Smith, of Orlando, accidentally
shot herself in the hand Sunday. Her hus
band had given her his revolver to clean and
while Mrs. Smith was handling the weapon it
was accidentally discharged inflicting a very
uglv wound in her left h ind and wrist The
ball penetrated the palm of the hand and
came out at the wrist joint.

Judge J. D. Broome, of the Seventh judicial
circuit, arrived at Tampa Sunday night and
sat Monday In the Camparito murder case, in
plaoe of Judge Barron Phillips, who is still
ill. Evidence for the state is still being Intro
dueed. and it 1s thought that the case will con
tinue all the week. Two interpreters are em
ployed one by the state and the other by the
defendants, as nearly all the witnesses are
Sicilians.
Tampa Times: Thirteen Spaniards who at
tempted to enter Key West Saturday night
were refused admission by the immigrant in
specters and ordered back to Havana. They
were transferred at sea Sunday from the Oli
vette to the Mascott; and taken back to Ha
vanna. ihe Immigrant inspectors are mak

lation of the alien labor contract law.
A special to the l’amna Times from St.
Petersburg says that John Killen awialthy
commission merchant of Cato. Wis . aged 66,
died there Sunday. Saturday he had an aoo
plectic at on the dock and fell, injuring his
head. His son was summoned. Allred Burke,
a young Englishman from London, saw Mr.
Killen when he was stricken with apoplexy.
The sight so excited Burke that he was taken
with hemorrhage and died immediately. He
was buried at St. Petersburg.
Ocala New Capitol: A meeting of those In
terested in the Honduras colony met Friday
night for the purpose of organizing. There
were twenty five present, and the followlug
officers were elected: S. L Hitting president:
S. P. Antony, vice president: G.Vv Cleveland,
treasurer; R. K. Snowden, secretary; R. M.
Williams, assistant secretary. The company
formulated plans and adopted the by-laws
and constitution of the association A com
mlttee of three was appointed to visit Hondu
ras and negotiate with the government In re
gard to settling the colony on lands belonging
to the country and investigate the advantages
offered by the people.

hre and with the same kind of apparatus
that is in use in Havana, they did not find
them satisfactory and they decided to try the
apparatus in ue In the north and the skilled
lalorof that section Therefore, they have
bought ten new machines and secured from
New Yoik sixteen skilled operatives of both
sexes to work these machines. If the experi
ment proves successful they will enlarge the
business rapidly and hope in time to be able
to use the labor to be found here.
" P. C. Oglesby, who was released Jan. 4 from
the royal prison in Havana, has been in
Tampa within the past day or two, His im
prisonment he says, was on the charge of re
ststing arrest. But Hstj Howard, an Amer
ican sailor imprisoned last June, charged
with the same offense, is still In jull, detained
without bail ard with no prospect of release.
The United States consul general has secured
a change of Howard's case from the military
to the civil court, under the Spanish-Ameri
can treaty. but that is all he has accom
plished. The case of Howard demands the
attention of the state department as he has
• been imprisoned over seven months without
trial.

to Nashville. Louisville and Cincinnati. Train 7H carries Pullman sleeping car Port Tamps
and Jacksonville to New York. Trains 5 and 6 carry Pullman Buffet sleeping ears between Sa
vannah and Tampa via Dupont, Santa Fe Junotlon and Juliette. Trains 23 and 16 carry
