John A. Reid, of Pmnam county . lost his
honse and most of its contents by fire a few
days ago. Mr. Reid had no Insurance.
Mr. M. Nussman. pioneer merchant and
prominent citizen of Macon, died unexpect
edly Saturday morning. He was well-known
all over the state.
At Rome Saturday the petition of the cred
itors of the Rome street railroad to appoint
a permanent receiver was refused and the
road will be turned over to Its owners.
An effort Is being made to secure the next
annual meeting of the Pennsylvania State
Ires Association for Augusta. The associa
tion meet* at Harrisburg to-morrow to deter
mine when and where the annual meeting will
beheld.
Tbe store of L. J. McLane & Bro., at Se
nds was destroyed by fire at 5 o'clock Satur
day morning. The Are was discovered by
night watchman before it had made any
headway, but owing to an explosion of some
powder it was impossible to check It. The
stock was worth snout $5,500; insurance
about *3,000, in the Hartford Insurance Com
pany.
A horrible murder was committed at Dalton
Saturday. Bob Ramsey, son of the ordinary
of Murray eountv. killed Dan Dix.whorecently
resigned' the United States deputy marshal
ship to take charge of a livery sta ie He
refused to hire a horse to Ramsey because he
was drinking Ramsey, without warning,
fired, shooting him through the heart. Ram
sey fled
The jorr in the suit of J. F. Pou, Jr.
■gainst J. Kvle £ Cos., of Columbus, brought
ta a sealed veruict Saturday, giving Mr.
Pou his full claim $366. with Interest to date.
Mr. Pou alleged that without cause be was
dismissed from the employ of Kyle at Cos., be
fore the expiration of his contract, which
was for one year The case is one of a oout
two years standing
The Coweta Fertilizer Company, of Mew
nan. has shipped over i 000 ions of guano thus
far since ’he -e-soa opened, and the demand
is so heavy that the capacity eof the
works will be a ied u their utmost to fill the
orders that sre daily retag received. The
total out pet for the season will aggregate
something over 8 000 tons and orders cover

As Mrs. Sugurman was passing along Peters
street at Atlanta Saturday, late, with her
purse in her hand, she was suddenly ap
broached by a negro. He demanded her purse.
The lady became greatly frightened and
atarted tos-ream. but the negro threw his
hand over her mouth and seized her purse

reported to the police, who this morning ar
rested Will Crandall who they think answers
to the description given by Mrs. Sugaruian.
-Griffin Call: The very mild and changeable
winter that we have had up to date, has given
the fruit crop, prospective, a clack eye, for
the t ees have begun to bud in this section,
and in some instances are In full blown. r>auir

trees in his yard in romh Griffin, which shows
conclusively that the sap is beginning to rise,
and that, in some sections, the fruit crop will

baginning to bud on account of the very mild

The correspondent of the Morning News
at Tennille writes as follows: "Some of the
good people of Tennille have been Imposed on
by a Mrs. Brown, who came among us as an
evangelist sent out by the Pres i.vtcrlan
church. She canvassed among our people,
taking up subscriptions and preaching until
she had worked the place pretty thoroughly
and then after a lapse of a few days, she be
gan her work among tbe colored people, stop
ping with them, aud being entertained Dy
them. This smacks too strong of the old reg
ime of schoolmarm philanthropy to be rri
ished by our people, and as no credentials
were furnished we very naturally concluded
that she was working the evangelizing tip’
for the purpose of using the funds to further
her own enterprises.”

The Georgia and Florida Construction Com
pany has purchased the steamer Crescent
City, which will run between Carratelle and
Apalachicola, connecting with trains to and
from Tallahassee after Feb. 1.
Lake Monroe, at Sanford, has fallen almost
to the level of the low water mark of last

While T. J. Miller, of Sanford, was In Jack
sonville. last week, a fraudulent uheck for *M>,
apparently, but not really, signed by himself
and wife, came to the First National Bank to
be cashed. Suspecting something wrong, the
Officials refused to pay It, and thereafter as
certalned from Mr. Miller that it was a for
gery.
Madison Recorder: A negro festival at the
house of Jerry Coffee, a short distance from
town, last Saturday night, brought the usual
casualties of bullet wounds, bruised eyes, etc.
During this affair a general row occurred in
which Jesse Brown was shot in the back and
he supposes Wash Waller did the shooting
Douglas Burroughs carries a bruished head

Pensacola News: In the removal of Hunt
Chlpley from Pensacola to Louisville. Ky.,
Florida loses a young lawyer who had already
made his mark In professional ranks, a dem
ocrat who won his spurs gallantly In the
gubernatorial campaign and an orator whose
elequent speech has repeatedly touched the
hearts of tbe old confederate veterans and
their sous in the meetings where Georgia and
Florida traternized and dwelt lovingly on
glorious memories.
R. E. B. Buford wag tried In the United
State* court at Jacksonville Saturday on the
charge of violating the postal laws by mail
ing postal cards containing libellous, defama
tory and scurrilous matter.and I y Instructions
of Judge wayne a verdict of not guilty of the
charge was entered, but that he was insane.
Buford will probably be committed to the In
sane asylum at Washington. A large number
of the postal cards were put In evidence.
They were addressed to Hon William Wln
dom. Secretary of the Treasury, Washington,
D. C-, and Thomas B. Coulter auditor's
office, and Mr. Chambers, sixth auditor's
office. Washington, u. C., and were about
money claimed to be due Buford. It was this
man that shot and killed Deputy United
States Marshal L'Strange, who went down to
Sumter county In 18D1 to arrest him for the
crime charged above. Buford made his es
cape after the murder and remained In hiding
for about two years, when he went to Pensa
cola and surrendered to the authorities.
St. Augustine Press: James Reyes having
do detinlte occupation was arrested by the
Sherill and brought before Justice Forward
Saturday morning, charged by ex-Politeman
Frank Andreu with writing a letter Vo Mrs.
Andreu, ioimerly Miss i.mma Canova of
New Augustine, that contained obscene lan
guage and was grossly illustrated. Mr. and
Mrs. Andreu have been married a few weeks.
James Keyes lived with Mrs Andreu s family
In New Augustine, and according to the testi
mony of Mrs Andreu’s brother in court, notes
of a similar character had been sent to his
alster before The prisoner’s defense was that
“® not commit the offense because he
could not write. Ample evidence was shown
by Deputy Sheriff Turner, however, that he
had carried notes written by the prisoner
yjypj* in Jan in I*2 to his friends.
John Burns, a former schoolfellow of Reyes
I also testified that he could read and -write
when he was a boy. The letter was exhibited as
testimony Id court and lully sustained the
charges. Justice Forwartl required the pris
oner to give *2OO bail pending the session of
the circuit court. As the prisoner was unable
| to gtre this bond, he was returned to the jail.
Madison Recorder: Wednesday night W.
I H Newman, who is known by the soubriquet
I of "Marshal Ney." while under the Influence
of John Barleycorn was relating some of his
i war experiences, was insulted by one of the
| boys of the place who wore false whiskers
and the assumed name of Haywood, who im
peached the veracity of the marshal and who
further added fuel to the spark of auger by
declaring he fought on the union side in the
late war and knew that the marshal" had
deserted from the confederacy. He could not
stand that, so he challenged his accuser to
mortal combat, the same to occur at 10 o clock
yesterday. Haywood chose pistols
as xhe weapons, and at the ap
pointed hour principals, seconds, surgeons
and quite a number of citizens repaired to the
quiet shore of Lake Francis to have and to
see the thing oat. The weapons were loaded
with blank cartridges, positions taken and at
the word began tiring. At the third shot
Haywood fell, the marshal dropped his wea
pon and said: "There, by gosh, I told
that d—d yankue I'd kill him and Ive done
It-" The body was placed In a buggy by the
surgeon and brought up town and was one of
the foremost In getting bond for hia stayer.
Those who saw the farce enjoyed It hugely
until Mr. Newman found how he
had been played with. Then
he got mad sure enough. and the
last we heard of him he was wanting to chal
lenge the victor in the Corbett-Mitchell con
test for a fight to the finish with bare
knuckles.
SOUTH CAROLINA.
A Bapt Ist church is to be organized at
Setglingville on Friday, before the third Sun
day In February.
The city council of Rook Hill at Its last
meeting passed resolutions inviting the Clta
del Cadets to come there for their summer
encampment.
A reward of *6O has been offered for the ar
rest of Mose Prior, who is wanted for the
murder of James White. The murder was
committed In Aiken county.
The Williamsburg oounty board of control
met Wednesday, and appointed O. A. Mc-
Donald dispenser for Kingstree. making two
dispensaries in tbat county thus far.
W C. Wherry, who was struck with a rock
by Ed Smith of Rock Hill, last week, la In a
serious condition. Smith was arrested, but
has been released on giving bail for *SOO.
The Ro?k Hill Poultry Show opened Thurs
day morning with about 200 birds. The asso
ciation is yet in its infancy, this being Its
seoond exhibition, but Its organizers are
very enthusiastic and hope to make it a big
success.
At the meeting of the directors of the
Woman's College at Rock Hill, last Friday.
Dr. T. A. Crawford and W. J. Roddey, of Rock
Hill, were elected trustees for four and two
years respectively. W. B. Dunlap, also of
Rock Hill, was elected bookkeeper.
While the coroner was absent at Claremont
an old employe at the Sumter Cotton Mills,
William J. Wall, died suddenly and Trial
Justice Manning held an Inqueßt over his
boily. From the testimony of the phvßlolan
the Jury rendered a verdict of death from
heart disease.
The secretary of state has granted a charter
to the Planter's Grocery Company, of Spar
tanburg. Fifty per ceDt of tbe capital Rtock
has been paid in. The directors are George
B. Dean. W. T. Russell, J. B. Lyles. W. F.
West and J. D. Lewis. J. P. Lyles Is president
and treasurer.
There were two inquests held In Sumter
county Wednesday. Gramlison Frost an old
negro at Claremout. while handling a pistol
accidentally discharged it. the ball entering
his breast and passing through his heart.
He died Immediately. The verdict of the jury
was in accordance with the facts.
There is a bright prospect for another big
cotton mill In Sumter. Robert F. Barker of
Manchester. England, who is traveling
through the "sunny south land" prospecting
for factory sites and investigating the condi
tion of the cotton manufacturing industry, re
gards the city favorably as a site for its loca
tion.
An election was held last week at Tlrzah,
an Incorporated ' town," six miles east of
Yorkvtlle, on tbe Three C's railroad, on the
question of establishing a dispensary and re
sulted in a vote of 15 to 5 In favor of Its estab
lishment. A majority of the board of control
Is opposed to its ostai lishment and will re
quest that It be not established.
A commission has been issued to C. L.
Martin. J Hsrvey Moses, Jr.. H. G. Wilder,
J. A. Ryttenberg and K. 11. Baker as the cor
porators of the Bicycle Club and Track Asso
ciation of Sumter. The object of the company
Is to purchase property, construct thereon a
race track, grand stand, etc, and run a park
devoted to bicycling. I'he capital stock is
*6OO, with a privilege of Increasing to *2.000.
A aad accident occurred at the Standard
Cotton Mills, on the outskirts of Rock Hill,
last Friday. A little boy named Tom Gal
mon. about 5 years old. was left In the house
alone by his mother for a few minutes. He
went too near the Ore. and his clothes caught
and were burned off from bis waist down
Some children attempted to put tbe fire out,
but without success, and the little fellow lin
gered until Saturday, when he passed away,
apparently without pain.
