Savannah’s Place in the Southern
League Assured.
j he Team to Be Signaed at Once and
put in Practice— McClooky to Be in
Savannah This Week— Baltimore and
New York Negotiating: for Games
Here Before the Opining of the
League Season.
The interest in base ball circles is at a
high pitch. The news that McCloskey
ttas aireed to manage the Savannah team
was received, yesterday, and the next
question arises, What players will he
lign? , _ *
McCloskey has received offers from, the
irest, but when he was here lost summer
he became so attached to the place and
people he was glad to come back. The
contract Mr. Jeff D. Miller has with him
is mutually advantageous and McCloskey
will report in Savannah the middle
Of this week. He will bring
his family here and make Savannah his
home during the season.
McCloskey has a good string of players
in view, and now that he has the reins in
his hands it will not be long before the
team " ill be signed and In thorough prac
tice The club that will be organized will
not be troubled for financial support.
This has already been assured. The
amount of actual cash required is
small and Kits been already guar
anteed. The club will attend to
the business affairs and the signing
of players and the entire management of
the team will be in McCloskey’s hands.
to ahrange a schedule.
The schedule committee will get to
work immediately after the league meet
ing ou the loth inst. Mr. Miller, who is
on this committee will look carefully
after Savannah's interests. The Electric
Kail way Company and the Coast Line are
making bids for the games to be played at
the Wheelman's Park add at the Bolton
street grounds. The Wheelman'B Park is
supposed to be in better condition and
can be easily and quickly reached.
Mr. Miller lias not closed for either of
the parks.
The Baltimore team Will be here April
6, f'. and 7. and offorts are being made to
bring all the league teams that are com
ing south on practice trips in the spring.
Pugilistic Champion Corbett may play
with the Baltimore team, and come here
to get his hand in before beginning to
play m July and August. When asked
the other day about the offer to play ball
he replied:
WHAT CORBETT BAT 9.
“People think that this is simply an
advertising scheme, but in that they will
be mistaken. I know a thing about hand
ling a ball. Baseball was my favorite
pastime in my younger days on the slope,
and, among others, I used to practice
with my friend, Tom Brown, of the Louis
vi.les. We little thought -then that I
would be at the head of the pugilistic
business, and be the highest salaried ball
player in the < ountry. if Manager Han
lon did not fi el confident that I could hold
my own. Ido not think that he would
make any ' such offers, and I would not
accept such a proposition simply for the
purpose of making a guy of myself. Why,
down in Jacksonville, I handled the hot
test ball with ease, so that my trainer
was fraid I would be injured.
"Mr. Hanlon made me an offer to play
on his team, but X said he couldn’t get
me. He offered me SIO,OOO for the season,
but I made arrangements to take my
father and mother to Europe, and #lo,ojg
couldn't make me break my promise. I
intend to get back in May. But this is
different if Mr. Hanlon wants me for
July and August. I am disengaged for
that period. My company will be idle,
and if he really wants to give me SB,OOO
for those two months he can have me.
You may say that I will come very near
accepting it. That isn’t an offer to be
quickly thrown aside. I do not know
what position I shall play, and do not
care. 1 have played ball professionally
before. I would as soon play first base as
right field, and would not shrink from
pitching or catching if assigned to either
position.’’
It may be added that with Corbett as
pitcher or catcher there would probable
be little dispute as to balls and strikes.
THE NEW YORKS COMING SOUTH.
Owing to the difficulty to pet the polo
ground in New York in condition during
March, the New York team will begin its
practice in thq south, and will probably
locate in Augusta. Hanlon, of the Balti
mores. wants to arrange to play exhibi
tion games with New York, and these
two teams will, no doubt, come to Savan
nah The games here will be played be
fore the southern league season opens,
and the fans will have enough good ball
to satisfy them.
The Baltimore team will reach Macon
the latter pait of March, where exhibi
tion games will bo played with scrub
teams and other teams in ihe league.
The fact of the New York club signing
so many college pla\ err, has brought the
remark from a base ball enthusiast, that
it will not be long before the club will
develop into a literary society.

from the credit he had accorded to Liv

had retired to the city on Jan. 7, the day
priorto the battle, on pretense of a violent
colic, which only left him next day, on
the arifiduncement of Jackson’s complete
victory.
Noise, oh seeing his cotton put into the
defences, remarked to Livingston, that he
thought it singular that he would take a
better grade pf cotton from a vessel ready
to sail —cotton worth 10c per pound in
stead Of gathering up a lower grade of
fotton which was abundant in the city,
and worth only 7c. To this Livingston who
was ever ready with an answer, retorted,
that if tbe cotton was his he knew no

fending it. The anecdote was afterwards
fastened on Gen. Jackson.
After the battle the British demanded
under a flag of truce time for both armies
to bury, their dSad, Gen. Jackson re
sponded that he had no dead to bury, but
that-tha. British should have a day. As
to the story of the pirates, it seems that at
Hie time some of their leaders were in
Jail in New Orleans awaiting trial. They
were released, no doubt with the under

that juncture would purchase immunity
for past offences, but there were not more

The Norwegian bark Transatlantic,

sand ballast, which will be discharged on
Hutchinson’s Island, opposite Drayton
street, after which she will load with
naval stores for JSurope.
The Italian bark Maria, was cleared
yesterday with 1,688 barrels rosin, val

tine, valued at 81,617, and 9,600 staves,
valued at #I,OOO.
Thev Austrian bark Mie Figle was
cleared yesterday for Gutujewski, Russia,
with 4,725 barrels of rosin, valued at
$11,191.
A board of surveyors, consisting of
Capt. Lewis Wiggins, port warden, Capt.
J. E. Anderson, master of the Norwegian
bark Herman Lehmkuhl, and Capt. M.
Kaldager, master of the Norwegian bark
Ludvig Holberg, held a Survey on board
of the Norwegian bark Lakme, which ran
aground in the river about five miles be
low the. city, while going to sea last
Thursday. The vessel, while being towed
down the river, struck a mud bank, the
tide being low at the time. She was got
ten off by two tugs on the high tide Fri
day. The board of surveyors found that
the boat was not apparently injur and by
the accident, and recommended that she
proceed to her destination, and if upon
discharging her cargo of naval stores, any
damage is discovered, that repairs be
made before she is allowed to take an
other cargo. The Lakme is bound for
Newcastle.
