gone into the cell occupied by the negroes, on

two doors to the cell, and as he entered he
locked the outer door behind him. One of
the negroes asked permission to set a bucket
of slops in the corridor of the cell, and was

after depositing the bucket on the floor, he
caught Mr. Fogel around the legs and threw

the fohrth man searched his pockets for the
cell keys Mr Fogel was completely at the

effort to frde himself, and lost two or three

Athens Banner: W. J. Mathews, of Madi
son county, was in the city !• riday, and he in
.formed a Banner reporter of a shooting scrape
that occurred near John Mathews’ still house
in Madison county on Wednesday evening. It
seems that Jasper Watkins got into a dispute
with Berry Watkins. which resulted in a
rather serious difficulty. Both parties were
ribenewhat under the influence of strong drink
and were therefore very reckless. Jasper
Watkins received two wounds, one in the
face, on or above the nose, and the other in the
shoulder. Mr. Mathews informed us that the
wounded man was taken home and received
prompt medical attention. The wound in the
face was quite severe, aud as the probing was
•being done it was bo painful and exhausting
that the doctor had to desist. Mr. Mathews
said it was not known really how T bad the
wound was. but it was thought to
be of a very grave character. Athens
readers will remember that jasper Wat
kins, the wounded man. is the person who
shot and killed Meredith Yarborough near
Athens several years ago. There were some
extenuating circumstances connected with
the killing of 5 arborough, and only a short
time fn the penitentiary was imposed He

vs. the five negroes charged with high way
robbery, in holding up Z. T. Lad tv. and
taking from his pockets $1,400 in cash, was
called at Kingstree Monday, neither the pros

MITCHELL'S OPINION OF CORBETT
A Hard Hitter, a Cyclone Fighter, and
as Strong as a Lion.
From the New York Sun.
Quincy, Jan. Hl.—Tommy Keogh,
formerly a light-weight pugilist, but now
in the shoe business here, has received a
letter from Charley Mitchell, in which
the pugilist says:
“I can't make up my mind that I have
gone back, for I believe I entered the ring
as good as when I fought Sullivan to a
draw*. I tell you the American people
have never sized Corbett up right. He is
a cyclone and as strong as a lion. I had
no show whatever with him in a clinch.
Ho is as quick as a featherweight, and as
powerful us Sullivan. We were bitter en
emies before the fight and tried hard to
punish each other, and we may have lost
our heads for the time being. As to
fouls we were even. He struck mo a
light blow before I was on my feet, and 1
struck him twice on his going to his cor
ner. 1 may have lost faith in rnyself in
the second round, but I tried gamely to
get as far as I could. 1 was terribly dis
appointed, as well as my friends, in not
being able to last longer. I don't want
any one to tell me that Corbett can't
strike a wicked, punishing blow. I
thought I could worry him by infighting,
but I found him very much at home there
himself. 1 have seen Sullivan's wicked
looks, but I never want to see another
look like Corbett had when we started on
the second round. It gave me a feeling I
never bad before. I am glad to say we
have made up. I was clearly outclassed.”
