Fertilizer Inspector S. H. Fulcher was a

Lawtonville has been in a fever of excite

Waynesboro True Citizen: The people of
this county may have less money than ever,
oras little as at any time, but it is most grat
ifying to know that there is more meat and
com in the county than there has ever been
at this season. A friend and a good and suc
cessful farmer gives it as his opinion that In
that respect the people of the countv are bet
ter pr< paTed for hard times with provisions

ually the farmers are awakening to the fact

Waynesboro True GltUen: The Jackson
xrte ials lately discovered among a lot of rub
bish in an old warehouse in Savannah brings
up reminiscences about them Two have
turned up in our city. An old veteran our
townsmau. Sol. Wetberbabn. has one frame!
which is exactly like the ones discovered. He
was a Jew confederate, of which there were
many, and as brave soldiers as fao id the can
nons that belched fire and grape shot, and
th© honof of this medal could not be in ha ids
tnat deserved it more. Another one was
found on a battle field and is among a private
Collection of confederate relies in this place.
Jackson, no doubt, had them struck to honor
his men. but didn't get them before he fell.
Americus Times-Hecorder Friday, after
reading of the escape of a half dozen prisoners
from the Thomas county jail and the attempt
to murder Jailor Singletary. Jailor McArthur
went over to his “hotel to look after the com
fort of his guests, in assigning them to rooms
Jailor MoArthur noticed that one of the men.
Will Harris, carried a piece of baggage rather
peculiar in appearance He ordered the
negro to put it down and after locking him
securely in his cage. McArthur went back to
examine the bundle. Imagine his surprise
when he found it a most formidable weapon,
doubtless prepared especially for him. A
heavy iron bar had been wrenched from a
cot, and about this was wrapped two long
steel springs taken from the same place.
?his made a very formidable weapon, nearly
our feet in length, and about it was care
fully wrapped a numoer of strips torn from
a blanket. One blow from such a weapon
would have caused instant death.
FLORIDA.
Mrs. Acre Johnson, living near Hancock
lake, in Hernando county, had the misfortune
to be severely burned last Friday by her
clothes catching tire. Her injuries are very
painful but not dangei^U;*.
A small cyclone swept across the country
twelve miles southeast of Brooksviile last
week at the McMinn place. It wrecked the
barn and destroyed the fences, carrying the
rails into the woods. Its track wus aoout
seventy-five yards wide and three miles long.
All the timber in its track was blown down.
• Lightning struck a pine tree at Brooks
viile last Monday tearing it to pieces an I
scattering it in dire ion. One piece of
timber about 7 feet long, about the size of nu
Ordinary rail was thrown 70 feet and the end
driven into the ground over a foot. Other
and smaller pieces were thrown 50 to 90 feet
away.

Dorcas Bailey, a cruiy negress. standing in a

she was nearly exlßtted. having licen in the

from the care of Solomon O Neal about a
month ago. and was supposed to be at the
home of her daughter in law at Mundon Hill.
Mr. Nott took her out of the pond and de
livered her to her friends.
Mrs. William Gaskins, a most estimable
young lady at Orange Lake, died at her home
at the above place Thursday night, after a
few day's illuess. She had been married
nearly a year to William Gaskins, section
master of the Florida southern railway at
that place About two years ago Mrs. Gas
kins. in company with her sister, met with
an accident on the t itra branchaif th t !o.rida

injuries received at the time. The ilea hof

accident

streak of luck came in the shape of a fat
'possum. The *posum just deliberately
walked out of the swamp a few miles so lth
of Palailux. and. .seeing the train standing
there for wood, quietlv walked in the rear
door of the sleeper, which was open and en
s opsed himself beneath the berth of a lady.
When the possum was discovered the tram
was whooping it along through the pine' woods
at the rate of fortv miles an hour ihe way
the lady screamed when, she found out that a
wild animal from the swamps of Florida was
in the car w< lie up the whole train, and for a
. time there was an exciting scene, men grab
! bing their guns for robters. and trainmen
ready to run to the reset e of the passengers.
Conductor Waddell was to the rescue in a
! moment and soon had the 'im in fetters.
He was a fat fellow, and when he api eared
on the ta >le of the doaghty conductor all
garnished around with s\%?et taters. he
was a sight for a photographer.

On Mop day C. W Carpenter, of the firm of
Carpenter <v Brice, liverymen, of Chester, was

day, when he died. 0
A commission for a charier has been issued
to the Tugaloo Iron Works, of Abbeville, ihe

Heard and J. C. Klogh. 'lhe capital stock of
the company is to be #12,000.
The large barns of B. F. Crayton, of Ander
son. were burned on Friday night. About
thirty register© 1 Jersey and Ayrshire cows,
six flue mules and two thoroughbred horses
were among tlie lost. Mr. Crayton’s loss will
exceed $3,0.0. ’lhi property was only insured
for 1600.
James R. Owens. Jr., azed 25. employed as
at the Chicora Phosphate Works
at Charleston. Friday morning was caught by
the sleeve in a cogwheel. Ills right arm was
torn from the socket, his right ear torn off
and his cheat frightfully lacerated. Ihere is
but a slight chance of his recovery-
O. E. Thomas, of Columbia, has been ap
pointed a member of the board o . examiners
of the Pharmaceutical Association of the
state. The board now has a great deal more
authority than it has ever had. as according
to a recently enacted law it is requite 1 that
practicing physicians who desire to practice
pharmacy have to stand the examination he
fore the pharmaceutical board.

seat of the remodelled Berkeley county has

A daughter of Joseph Goff, a farmer living
in the eastern section of Edgedeld county,
was fatally burned a few* days since. She was
at work in the field, and her little brother, to
amuse himself, .set tire to a bunch of grass
near by. from which her dress caught. She
ran to her father, who was working in an ad
joining field, for assistance, but before the
flames could be extinguish© !• she was so
badly burned that death resulted in a short
time afterwards.
At Columbia Tuesday afternoon two young
sons of Jailer Coleman went uut hunting, and
when they arrived at Fisher s mill pond they
were stopped by two young while tramps and
relieved of their guns. The men then went
through their pockets fo** any little change
that might he found, 'ihe boys came home
and told their father of their experience, and
ne at once got on a horse and went to the
scene, where he arrested the two men with
the guns; tied them with a rope and brought
them to the city.

A few days ago Sheriff Alderman, of Aiken,
received a letter fror* a friend in Kershuyv
county informing him of the disappearance
of a white woman. Annie Wright by name.
The letter further stated that the gene al sup
position of the people in that county was that
the woman, who was ot %ud reputation, had
Veen murdered by some negro men with
whom she had been living, and that two of
h ’ir black companions had been arrested on
suspicion .-nortly after receiving this
communication the sheriff received in
formation that a woman answering
the description of the lost female way living
in Foxtown, in Aiken county. Mr Alderman
looked into the matter and was convinced
that the party was no other than the sup
posed dead woman A+* soon as possible word
was sent of the And to the authorities in
Kershaw county, in answer the sheriff got
word that a picture of the woman was wanted
to complete the proof. On Wednesday the
required picture v\us taken and forwarded.
By this time, in all probibility. the two men
have been liberated, as the proof that the
supposed murdered woman is alive aud well
is conclusive.
