An Americus man who has thoroughly
■tudied the subject, is going to manufacture
potash from watermelons. His s heme is to
burn the melons and make potash of the
•shea and to this end he will plant a large
acreage in melons this spring.
The trolley wire of the electric street rail
way at Rome was 1 roken Friday by a falling

thrown several feet without much damage A

At Atlanta Saturday. Mayson & Hill, attor
neys for the Karges Furniture Company and
Others filed a bill for the appointment of a

furniture man. The claims amount to about

The Coweta Fertilizer Company.of Newnan,
has already shipped and sold over 5.000 tons
of guano since the opening of the season, not
Including local sales. General Manager Fisher
says he coaid easily dispose of 3.000 or 4.000
tons more If the capacity of the works would
allow’ It. The total output the present season
will be about B.UOO tons.
Laura Bransford, the little negro girl ac
cused of poisoning Y. F. Freeman s Infant at
Columbus, has been in jail a long time. It is
stated that Haywood Prince, the negro who
testified that the girl made a full confession
to him. now admits thut the allegedconfesion
was a lie of his own manufacture. Prince was
convicted of burglar* at this term of court
and sentenced to twelve years in the peniten
tiary-
Deputy United States marshals arriving at
Macon from Tattnall county Sunday, where
they bagged several counterfeiters, brought a
meager acco nt of a killing at Cos Mown.
Tattnall county, in which a young man named
Rozler was .-hot and instantly killed oy a
negro, whose name is not known, ihe killing
took jla e late Saturday afternoon. From
what the marshals were able to learn of the
affair, both the white man and the negro were
drinking.
Lollie Woods, the 3-year-old daughter of
George Woods, of Americus met with a
horrible accident Saturday which may dis
figure her for life. Her clothing caught tire
from ah open grate, and almost every garment
was burned from her body, ihe a eident oc
curred at the home of Mr. Woods shortly be
fore 31 o'clock. 'lhe little girl together with
two or three other small children, had been
s* nt into a room alone to play, the door being
closed to keep them from going out in the
rain, and her dress was ignited at the fire
place.
An election on the whisky question will be
held In Stewart county next Thursday, March
1. This county first went ‘ dry” in and
has teen •■dry’* ever since, although there
have been two 6r three elections on the 44 ties
ton. The prohibitionists have won the day
with constantly increasing majorities The
last time it rea hed T. 7. The+ on litions have
changed since, and in the earning election it
will prot a. ly be quite close There are more
white men for whisky than ever before, and
the negro is more determined to down the
prohicitionists.
.Newnan Herald: A little son of Joseph
Lambert, who lives just across the line in
Campbell county, came to his death one day
last week under peculiarly distressing clr
cumsUn es. He was in an old sedge field, in
company with a party of young companions,
plaving. After awhile he wandered off to
himself, and. ignorant of the little fellow’s
whereabouts, the other children set fire to
the dry grass, and In a few moments the entire
held was a seething mass of flames. Soon
the little boy's s reams were heard, and it
was found, upon investiga ion that the
flames had swept over him in their mad fury,
burning him so tadly that he died on Satur
day.
Rome Tribune: Several nights ago a

back to his promised urlde. He lays the

ing, didn't you know it?" Poor fellow, he
leaves the house and linds his wav l ack to
the ordinary s office, where he tells this offi
cial that he has oeen ola e i false and wants
his $1.50 hack The ordinary is a kind-hearted
man and gave him 75 cents, with the promise
to issue him another license when he

The phosphate busices at I ernandina last
week was at a standstill. The steamers
Kuabon. lied Jacket, ons erg and • eo gla
are due There are 25u lords of phosphate in
the yards waiting the arrival of these vessels. !
The consequence is the Florida entrai and
Peninsular railroal yards are almost blocked.
There is no way to relieve this blockade, be
cause ihe bins of the ele.ator are filled.
Saturday night a lvrge number of the citi
zens of Palmetto held a meeting, and after
listening to atemeuts of about a do en of
their num er satisfied themselves fully that
George Turner, a one-legged man had on va
rious occasions insuTed different ones of the
si hool girls and children, and they resolved
themselves into a committee of the whole,
waited uj on Turner and him to leave
Palmetto at once, never to return.
Evlnston, Roardman and Mclntosh are
so near together as to . e practically one
community. They are in a row on the Flor
ida Southern railroad and on west side of
Orange lake Around Evlnston upward of

earlier than usual. Evlnston shipped four

Two cigarmakers. a Cuban and a Mexican
residing in Marti City, an Ocala suburban
cigar city, became engaged in a cutting scrape

deep cuts in the head and body, and at first it
was thought he would die. The Mex
can received several cuts on the
hand and was taken to the county
jail, where he Is now awaiting h s trial at

Cubans are very indignant over the affair,
and say that they will run the Mexican out of
town.
Deputy Sheriff W. D. Vinzant and Mrs. J.
Townsend and Miss Jane Townsend, whom he
went to .'at. Louis after, arrived in Jackson
ville Sunday. The women are now in the
county Jail. The women are accused of get
ting goods from W. A. Dell, a druggist,
amounting to M-40; from Cohen Bros., dry
goods valued at s2l: from O. n. Keene, mil
liner. sls; Mrs. Marie Briand. the dressmaker.
and furniture for the house at No. i 0 West
Adams street. These goods were got the
last week in January. . hey left here Sun
day. Jan- 28. and arrived at M. Louis Monday
night. They were arres ed the next day and
on thelr persons were found jewelry valued

lining of Mrs. iownsend s dress.
St. Auguf tine News: Last Saturday after
noon Miss Delia Mimms. in t barge of the
public sohool at Tocoi and two of her pupils
Mamie and Frank Hudnall. went off for a
row down Tocoi creek. They had gone brt a
short distant e. when an alligator seven feet
long attacked the t oat. Frank Hudnall was
rowing, when the gator grasped one of the
oars in his mouth Things ’ooked dangerous
to the pleasure seekers. wh< n iuick as a flash,
Miss Mamma drew her jo caliber -mith &
Wesson pistol and with steady aim, sent a
ball crushing through his head, just behind
the eves. a his infuriated the animal and he
raised h mse.f out of the water nearly three
feet. Thou Miss Mimms shot again with a
true aim: the ball took effect just behind the
left shoulder. This was too much for the
’gator, so he gave another struggle and turned
upon his back. The pleasure seekers took
him in tow and landed him at Tocoi.
