Ling Pang is a very shrewd Chinaman, who
succeeded in beating the United states gov

York by smuggling opium. Last January his
opium was seized and Ling was put under
a $15,000 bond, but as ho felt sure he would be
convicted, he quietly slipped away and left
his bondsmen in the lurch That made the
bondsmen mad.and they started)! wo good dep

Jacksonville Times-Union: A correspon

while the freight on a barrel of oranges from

the freight on a barrel of apples from Syra

also true that for all things under the sun

young friend. Harry Rex. who was managing
the oat ihey glided over the lake very
smoothly for awhile until it became neceasary
to make a tack. Ihe wind was brisk and as
Mr. Hex attempted to shift the boom. Mrs.

suddenly to the opposite side of the boat,
when it immediately capsized, precipitating
its occupants Into the water. Mr. Rex. with
remarkable presence of mind, seized the boat

Struggling in the water, with tho other hand,
and thus they were enabled to keep afloat
until Harry Calton, who was near the lake
and saw' the oat go over, swam in and
pushed the boat and its shivering occupants
ashore. Mr. Calton is a bold swimmer, and
but for his heroism Mrs Prince and Mr.

A Pet Coon.
From the Lewiston Evening Journal.
Capt. Weed, of Deer Isle, a few weeks
ago, presented to the Ocean View house
at Green's landing, a South Carolina
marsh coon. The lady owned him
before Capt. Weed took js ssession kept
boarders. She rang the dinner bell one
day, and as the guests tiled into the din
ing room they beheld his coonship in the
center of the table with his paws in the
sugar bowl helping himself. Of course
the guests were disgusted, and the lady,
dreadfully chagrined, so much so that
she gave him away at once. Sti \he is a
nice little coon. He st als eggs whenever
he wants them, and recently he was dis
covered with the bluing box in the wash
basin washing his face as blue as indigo.
He is about as large as a big cat, but on a
hunt after foxes this fall he fell afoul of
oik* of the dogs and whipped him soundly.
He is a very affectionate little fellow, but
woe be to the one who thwarts him, as
be must have his own way or there is
trouble.
He has learned that candy may be
found in people s pockets, so oh the arri
val of the guests he may be found with
his paws thrust into their pockets. One
traveling man, for instance, was sitting
talking one evening, when suddenly his
pockets were robbed of a pencil sharpener,
but by sharp chase he recovered the same
vowing vengeance on poor Jack.
Wednesday night JJ. K. Manson and
wife registered at the Ocean View ami
were assigned to the best room, but on
entering the chamber, to their amaze
ment, they found it occupied bv a strange
animal, the like of which they had never
seen. Of course they retreated, and an
nounced that their room was occupied;
and what a disgusted look on the propri
etor’s face, as he had just a few minutes
before shut Jack into another room.

BRUNSWICK POLITICS.
Some of the Candidates Who Are In
the Political Field.
Brunswick, Ga., Feb. 28. —The political
situation in Glynn county is remarka
ble at prrseul for its apparent inactivity.
The presence in Brunswick recently, how
ever, of Mr. \V. M Toomcr. of Waycross,
occasioned considerable talk amongst the
politicians. Mr Toorner is the bright
young stenographer of tho Brunswick
circuit, and is, of course, very close to
Judge Joel L. Sweat. His arrival in
Brunswick during this jieriod, when the
question of putting out an opposing can
didate to Judge Sweat is the absorb
ing question with several of Brunswick's
lawyers, naturally excited comment.
His visit started the friends of Col. J. W.
Bennett to work again, and they are
pressing him to enter the race for the
judgeship. Col. Bennett has not yet an
nounced his intention.
If Judge Sweat has opposition he will
put up a strong light.
There are only two candidates men
tioned for the legislature so far, Judge
Alfred J. Crovatt and Mr. F. K. Twitty.
Mr. Twitty lias not yet postiively an
nounced his candidacy, but should ho do
so it would bo on the Turner-Bennett is
sue, Tuuner for the Senate and Bennett
for the bench. This issue is supposed to
be in direct opposition to Judge Crovatt,
who is credited by tho Turner
and Bennett men with being
for Dußignon for the Senate and Judge
Sweat for the bench
Before it was made public by your corre
spondent that Col. Bennett’s name was be
ing proposed for tho bench, the local poli
ticians were undecided between Twitty
and Crovatt. Since Twitty has been
spoken of as a sti-aightout Bennett man a
quotation on the situation by a well
known politician will not be amiss. Ho
said: “if Twitty had not brought the
Sweat-Bennett issue in liis carhpaign he
would have held some strong supporters,
who would have aided his fight in order
to help Mr. Turner As it is now some of
these men arc friends of Judge Sweat
and will give Crovatt their aid on that
account regardless of Crovatt’s vote on
the senatorial question. It Is fair to say
for Judge Crovatt that he is non-commit
tal on the senatorial question.
Twitty is feeling tho pulse of the pub
lic. If his friends push him forward
against Crovatt an interesting canvass
will be had.
With a number of people Crovatt is
very popular, and the able and good work
he did on behalf of securing a sewerage
system for Brunswick and bis conscien
tious work in pla< ing the bonds aud mak
ing the sewerage matter a success are in
his favor.
The real issues of the campaign to date
lie not between the candidates, but the
men for whom the prospective candidates
will vote for the Senate. Twitty will be
red hot for Turner, and if Crovatt is
located as being against Turner and for
dußignon, lie will have a strong fight to
down Mr. Turner's friends in getting first
place. Glynn county is for Turner for the
Senate, and his friends can be counted to
stand solid against any man who is
against him. If Twitty should decide not
to run. Col. W. K. Kay is spoken of as
Crovatt's opponent.
