Ticket Agent Davis, at the Central derot at
Americus. recei\ed a package yesterday, con
taining H 37 coppers with the request that
bills or silver i e given for it. The coppers
were needed for change and were accepted.
On Thursday last Mr. and Mrs. David Ros
ser, of Putnam county, celebrated their
golden wedding. Fifty years ago they were
united in marriage i y Lev. Walter K. Bran
ham. who is now alive and in fair health at
his home in Oxford.
F. C. Lumpkin was found dead in his barn
at Franklin Wednesday morning with his col
lar bone broken and severe bruises on the
head, lie was robbed of |6O. f l wo negroes
have been arrested who were with him and
knew of his having money.
At Columbus Tuesday night as W. S. Davis
was passing down First avenue he was in
sulted oy Careen 'ihomas, a notorious, impu
dent negro, and a personal altercation ensued,
during which Davis shot the negro, inflicting
a wound from which he died.
Ihe residence of C. L. Ledsinger. assistant
foreman of the i olum us inquirer Sun vom
\>osing room, was set on fire l.y an incendiary
Vednesday. Yiuie Alexander, a colored ser
vant in Mr. Ledsinger s employ, is s spe ted
of the crime, and was arresieil on a charge of
arson.
While snowballing n.t Jefferson Monday, a
negro boy named Will Miller insulted a young
man named Mi Kov Me hoy resented the in
sult by stabbing Miller in the uaik. ihe boy
was badlv wounded. A serious row was
threatened for a time, but a crowd collected,
and further trouble was preventsi.
At a meeting of the creditors of Charles
Wolff, at Griffin. Tuesday, therj
being no one present t> object,
as the proprietor had left. town.
George C. Stewart was appointed temporary
receiver for the come n with instructions to
take stock and ascertain just what the assets
were at the time of the tire.
The case for whitecapping against Edward
Shaw. F. H. Salmons. Morgan uaulding and
Will Thompson, at < rawforu, was dismissed
Tuesday, on account of the absence of the
prosecutor, after he had been notitied to be
present. 'lhe evidence upon which they had
been arrested would not have been sufficient
to convict had the case been tried.
Judge C. C. bmith. of Hawkinsville, and Miss
Mattie O’Daniel were united in marriage at
the residence of the bride s parents. Dr. and
Mrs. W. O’Daniel, in Twigrs county, three
miles east of Bullard. Wednesday. The
groom is the judge of the superior
court of the Oconee circuit. ihe
bride is the daughter of Dr. W. O’Daniel
principal physician of the penitentiary.
Another murder case stands for trial at
Monroe this week, the stale versus Sam Grif
fith, colored. On Dec. 1. 1893. Griffith, a man
about 40 years of age. assaulted his step
father. Jerry Thompson, aged probably
and beat and kicked him w ith great severity.
Jerry died twenty days later, ihe indictment
alleges that the death was caused tp the
wounds inflicted by Griffith, and the same is
charged to be muider. An unusual feature of
the case is that Jane Thompson, Griffith s.
mother, is the prose.-utrix.
Ordinary Calhoun, of Atlanta, is again
grieving over the loss of a setter dog lie
has had ’ Prince” out on the trains quite often
taking him for a hunt. A night or two n o
the judge went into the city and lot Princo
follow him. As he started home ho went by
the Union depot. The Georgia train was
moving out. and. running ahead of his mas
ter. Prince jumped upon the moving train.
Judge Calhoun did his best to get the dog off
the train, but failed, as Prince was evidently
anxious for a hunt. His master even started
to run after the train, but he knew-it could
outrun him. so he just stood still and vvat lied
it carry his dog off.

Tuesday morning as tho freight train was
leaving winterville for Athens. Rev. T. A.
Harris, of that place, came near losing his
lite As the train moved off. Mr. Harris was
in conversation with (.us Brlghtwell. of
Maxeys. He hurriedly stepped from he car
as it was moving, when hts coat caught to
some part of flu* steps and he was dragged
along for several feet. Ills body striking the
crossties. Conductor l lunkett and lu-übcn
McAlpin ran to the assistance of Mr. Harris
and tried to relieve him by lifting him. hut
failed. Mr. McAlpin then gave the coat a
vigorous jerk, w hich tore it from Mr. Harris'
body causing that gentleman to fall heavily
to the ground. He only received a few un
important bruises.
Maj. Flynn liarge.lt and his two sons. Flynn
and Lanoy. of Harris county, went to Colum
bus Tuesday and while there employed a
negro woman who agreed to return home
with them. Wednesday morning when the
gentlemen, who were trave inc in a w agon,
ealled for their new employe, they found one
of her friends at the house who said the wo
man should not leave the city, .-die was de
termined to go, however, and got into the
wagon for that purpose. 'I he negro man pro
tfcs.ed vigorously, and with two or three
friends, started in pursuit. The Messis Har
gett were overtaken by the negroes at ilie
mile i ranch and the gentlemen decided to
bear the woman out in her determination to

Gainesville reports that the last cold spell
seems to have done but littAg damage, not
withstanding that there was frost Tuesday.
Growers claim that tomatoes m the open
fields were uninjured, and lettuce is hut
slightly touched, strawberries seem to have
escaped entirely.
G. F. sickles, now at Gainesville,forwarder

Quart** of strawberries to New York and Bos
ton. the present season. This is the heaviest
enipment ever made by one person durin : the
month of February. Last year uot a quart
had teen shipped up to this time.

SherifT Gordon arrested a negro named Albert
Wallace as the person who commuted the
murderous assault with an ax upon the young
ha k driver. Berney Touart. about two weeks
ago. Wallace had a trial before Countv
Judge McCulJagh Wednesday and was ac
quitted, there being no evidence against him.

Ocala New Capitol: The readers of the
Capitol will remember the burning of the Sil
ver springs hotel on the night of January 9,
which wa* owned by Dr. Porter Hanks Erer
since the occurrence certa’n parties were
shadowed, and Tues lay morning warrants
were iss ied for the arrest of the accused The
piper* were placed in the hands of Deputy
Sheriff F. M. Brown, who arrested Clarence
and Albert Smith, brothers and brought them
to neala Judge Hill heard the < ase in the
afternoon. Several witnesses testified. The
judge bound Clarence over in the sum of 4-tO)
and Albert in the sum of *IOJ. They gave
bond.
The South Florida Fair Association of Or
lando has sent checks amounting to <i.oko in
full payment of all premium*; This does not
inc lude* the racing purses which were paid as
won. One remarkable thing about the fair
last week is that, while 8.000 people visited
the grounds in live davs as shown bv the
tickets sold, yet in the live days there was no
disturbance, and not a single person was hurt
accidentally or otherwise, and no one saw a

At Jacksonville. Wednesday night M. C.
McFadden was arrested, charged with huv
ing stolen a valuable diamond ring from Rich
ard K. l ox, the well known sporting man.
who is stopping at the Windsor. McFadden
was ut the Windsor, uni in the toilet room
when Fox entered, between 7 and H o'clock,
to wash his hands. Fox pulled he ring which
is very valuable, off his finger anti put it on a
little shelf near the washstand while lie
washed. When he went to get his ring it was
gone, and he at once had Mci adden ai-rested.
Just why McFadden was singled out (or ar
rest Is not known, as there was a crowd in the
room at thf time the ring was m<ssed. When
taken to police headquarters McFadden was
searched thoroughly, but no ring was tound.
lie says that he worked four years for the
Clyde line and that he is now at work for the
East Coast line, and bitterly denies ail knowl
edge of the theft.

generally supposed that he was in Texas. Mr.
Parker offered a reward, out after the ranse
of months and nothing farther being heard of

ness to meet a party coining on from Texas
who it was thought, might be Holden. Tu*
man. however, wan not the one wanted, but
while engaged in looking up the new
arrival the shetifl heard s unething which led
him to bel eve that Holder was still in Florida
and. in fact, had never left the state. In
Pasco county, near Dad*} City, were living
some relatives of his who were said to have
in their family a niemoer known as Charles
Skipper, who was carefully kept from all ob
servation. Fugling pretty well assured that
he had run down his man at last. Sheriff
Hill l ary went to the vicinity last Sunday, and.
placing himself where he could see without
being seen, finally observed a man on horse
back come up from the suatnp and enter the
house m question. Mr. Hilliary shortly pro
.s nted himself at the entranee, and as he did
so heard a door slam. An inquiry lor Charles
Skipper brought the answer that no such per
son lived there or was known to the family.
