ESTATE OF THE LATE MR. fILAINE
He Did Not Leave a Million Dollars,
Nor the Half of It.
Washington Letter in Chicago Record.
It turns out that Mr. Blaine’s wealth, as
is usually tho case, was vory much over
estimated. He was generally supposed to
be worth more than J1.0U0.000, and in
oatnpaigu times was accused of several
millions. But his estate will not amount
to much more than £IOO,OOO, mostly in real
estate.
He owned the magnificent residence on
Dupont circle, which cost him about SIOO,-
000 in 1881, and which Mrs. Blaine now
oTets for $125,000. Mr. L /.. Loiter occu
pied it for five years, and paid a rental of
SIO,OOO, and afterwards SB,OOO a year, in
cluding the furniture and china. The
house in which Mr. Blame died was
bought for $05,000 in 1888, and
is worth much more as a hotel site
or for an o.fice building, as it is within
a stone's throw of the white house and
the treasury, ad oins the department of
justice, and is only live minutes’ walk
from all the principal hotels. Then Mr.
Blaine bought a residence on one of the
side streets in New York for his daughter
Margaret when she married Walter Dam
roseh, paying $50,000 for it. His old homo
in Augusta, opposite ttie state house, is
one of the most attractive residences in
that beautiful city, but property is not
salable there, and it would uot inventory
more than 812,000 or rent for more than
itiOO a year. Then he had a beautiful
villa at Bar Harbor, called Stanwood,
which was rented for SI,OOO a month last
season to Mr. Sloane, the New York car
pet man, which would readily sell for
$.15,000 or $-10,000. On what is known as
Meriden Hill, just outside of the city of
Washington. .Sir. Blaine had considerable
unproductive real estate, for which there
is no market now. but which will be val
uable some time, and he had a largo in
terest in coal lands in lioth Southwestern
Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
He had some stocks and bonds in his
tin box, out not a very large amount of
dividend payers. His mining interests in
Colora o and Utah wore largely on paper,
and at one time paid handsomely, but J
believe they are bringing Mrs. Blaine
very little, if any. revenue. She has a
comfortable income, although the Dupont
Circle house is empty, and is likely to bo
until times improve, for nobody but rich
people could maintain sueff an establish
ment, and that class tiro scarce in Wash
ington just now. They are stay ittg at home
and attending strictly to business.
