Barnesville Gazette: The farmers have
been quite busy for a week or so past, plant
ing cotton. They are planting less this year
than formerly, an 1 are preparing their lands
better. Some cotton is already up. and also
the corn that was planted a few weeks ago

the line of the Georgia, Carolina and North
ern road are go ng before the railroad com
mission and protest against them taking
away the agents from the little towns. The
people have gone to these places and built
houses, and Invested their money, and they
don t think ii right to be deprived of all the
benefits and advantages that the road gives.
Capt. Ed Purcell and Mr. George Hookey,
had a tight on the steps of the court bouse at
Augusta. Wednesday. The difficulty arose
over a dispute between the gentlemen. Mr.
Purcell struck Mr. Hookey with a buggy whip
across the shoulders and fa e. After he fell,
Mr. Purcell struck him on the head with his
pistol. Mr. Hookey hit a'apt. Purcell, and
left his mark, 'l he gentlemen were parted
by Sheriff O'Connor. Neither sustained any
serious injuries.
Tuesday morning, about 1 o'clock, the barn
at the Rome Urick Works, was found to be
in flames. The tire had gained such headway
when discovered that it was impossible to
save anything. It was a large frame building,
two ito c Two mules two wagons,
harness and fanning tools, 150 bushels of
corn, 7 tons of hay. carload of baled straw
feed, and U,OK) bundles of fodder were lost in
the Are. The -loss will amount to SI,OOO. with
no insurance. It is not known how the tire
originated.
H. C. Dillman. the man who was arrested in
Augusta Tuesday night charged with cheat
ing a party of Barnwell citizens out of #1,400 by
the alleged fraudulent sale of the state rights
to a gas generator, was carried to Allendale
Wednesday by Detective Howard. '1 here has
been no new developments as yet. in the case,
as is shown by tne following telegram re
eeived Wednesday night by the Augusta
Chronicle from its Barnwell correspondent:
"F. W. Fisher, of gas generator fame, is in
the guard house at Allendale, where all the
parties concerned have gone. B. C. Dillman
is in the custody of Detective Howard, of
Augusta. The whol business seems to be a
swindle of the gold dust order. Further de
velopments car. nit be given before to-mor
row.
Washington Chronicle• During the hail
storm last Thurg lay evening a sort of hurri

the warehouse of J. T. Heard & Cos. It blew

les. Mr. Sutton vuh dangerously hurt, and
was In danger all day Sunday. Dr. Simpson,
who was sent lor, reports him better on
Monday.
At Galliesville last Monday a moonshine
still was discovered near the center of the
town not more than HUoor luu yards from the
court home, it was lo a ted in a cellar of the
house of W. B. Moore. lather of the members i

year, and seems to have been detected by the
odor, which bad grown suspiciously strong,
and attracted the attention of t h:ef of Police

and two barrels of whisky were captured.

The Dixie interstate Fair, which opens in
Macon. Oct. I*l*4. promises to be one of the
best and most extensive expositions ever at j
tempted in the state. The management is in
the hands of the Macon Kxposition Company, :
with a capital stock of SIOO,OOO. The purses !
offered for the races will bring the best horses
in the south, a* the progc*lla fo ,
bo>distributed over a seven days meeting,
auu this feature is iu competent hands, i lie
agricultural departments are .n the hands of
the state . grhultural Society, and will he
conducted on a liberal scale, calc dated to
draw attention to the resources of the south.
The City of Macon will enlarge and improve
the splendid buildings at Central City Park.
In these buildings alone 000 square feet of
spate will be available; all the exhibits being
under one roof. Arrangements are being
made to secure the very best attractions,
which will be announced later. The indus
trial features will be a novelty. A -Jo,'foot
building is reserved for manufacturing of
southern prodm ts, and large premiums will
be offered for the best article made on the
grounds. The Dixie interstate Fair will no
open for eighteen days. All information can
he secured by addressing the secretary. J. it.

The steamers Santa Lucia and Sweeney
both arrived in Lake Worth through the inlet

Last Coast line, they are no longer needed on
Indian river, and will be put in commission
at fort Worth, the one a> a ferry boat and
the other on the run from Palin Beach to Bis

The'American Protective Association did
not coniine itself to Palatka. but endeavored
to effect an organization in Jacksonville. To
several ministers of the city circulars were
sent accompanied by two large etchings, each
of which was about twenty by twelve inches.
The circulars were headed: ’ Keep this quiet.

was that in which a farmer is the subject.
