GETTING READY TO FLY.
Prof. Langley Busy Perfecting Appa
ratus For Aerial Navigation.
From the Pittsburg Dispatch.
Washington, April2s.—Secretary Lang
ley. of the Smithsonian Institute, is very
busy these days perfecting his apparatus
for “aerial navigation,’’ as he calls it, his
flying machine, and will sood be ready to
make some practical experiments, as he
did last summer. He has the assistance
of some very able and skillful men, in
cluding Prof. Bell, the telephone inventor,
who takes great interest in the subject,
and .ias made many important sugges
tions.
Prof. Langley believes that the time
will come when people can get into their
Hying machines and bo from place to place
justas they now go in their carriages, and
the further ho carries his experiments
the more thoroughly convinced he is of
the correctness of his theory. During
the last few months he has made some
very important and interesting discov
eries concerning the currents of the air,
which will have a marked influence upon
his aerial navigation experiments.
SILVER IN UpTTEN BAGS.
Moth and Rust Getting in Their Work
at the United States Mint
Philadelphia Times.
Rusty bolts and rotting bags are typi
cal of the abounding folly of the policy of
coining silver dollars which nobody
wants, only to be stored, guarded and
counted at slated periods. The opening
of a vault in the mint preparatory to
counting and weighing tho 50,000,000 sil
ver dollars it contains revealed that moth
and rust were at their work of corrup
tion, and. the only reason thieves did not
try to steal was that gold was to bo had
for the stealing
The weighing of the tons of silver will
he the work of days and weeks, and after
it is all done the new bags will bo left to
rot and the bolts to rust until a change in
the mints uperin tendency necessitate a re
count of the 50-cent dollars.
