THEKE was no inspection.
But the Police Were All Ordered to
D Report Juut the Same.
The members of the city police force
we re in a state of excitement all day yes
terday over an order issued by the mayor
ygquirinp the whole force to assemble at
tl, e barracks at 6:3oo’clock in the after
order did not state for what pur
nose the force was to be assembled, and
{be police were kept guessing all day as
M what might be tho object of this un
usual summons. Mayor McDonoujch is
jed his first order to thts effect Monday,
• n ,i the whole department was ordered
to be at the barrack* at 0:80 o'clock. The
matter was kept strictly secret and the
members of the police forco rested upon
ti)e impression that there was some fear
ful and deadly work for them to perform,
the character of which they could not
fathom.
The whole force waa on hand at the
time specified, but Mayor McDonough
sent word that he had been unexpectedly
detained by important business and could
not be present. Orders were given for
the force to assemble again yesterday af
ternoon at the same hour. This seems to
ha\e been a mistake, but it kept the po
lice in a state of expectancy,
#ni i the opinion still prevailed
that there was some important work
to tie done. When Mayor McDonough
learned that the men had been ordered
to report again at 6:30 o'clock yesterday
afternoon, he instructed Chief Green to
withdraw the order. A great deal of
mystery was maintained at the barracks
about these orders. A Morning News
reporter, who endeavored to obtain some
information as to the meaning of the
order, found everybody at the barracks
in apparent ignorance of it. Neither
thief Green, Assistant Chief Reilly nor
Sergt lvillourhy would say anything
about it.
Mayor McDonough wa? appealed to.
and solved the mystery. He simply
wanted to inspect the police force. He
did not tell the officials at the police bar
racks w hat his object was.' however, and
this was why such an air of mystery was
given to the matter. Mayor McDonough
thought to catch the police napping, but
was prevented in the manner stated.
The reason the hour was fixed at
f :ii o'clock was because that is the time
when the day relief is coming in and the
night relief going out. The first detail
being also at the barracks the whole
force could be brought together at once
by detaining the night relief until the
dav relief men had all come in. Tho in
spection could then be made and the city
would be deprived of police protection for
only a very short time.

POLITICS IN TWO STATES.
Comments on Affairs in Georgia
and Florida.
GEORGIA.
Brunswick Advertiser: The immense
crowds which are gathering at the Geor
gia democratic rallies show that the peo
ple are in loyal faith with democracy and
have confidence in its policies of reforma
tion. This is going to be a year of im
mense majorities for democracy in Geor
gia.
Atlanta Journal: Congressman Turner’s
friends in Southeast Georgia have put
him into the race for tho United States
Senate, and before the campaign is over
he will speak in all parts of the state. Mr.
Turner is a student on political questions,
and is regarded as one of the safest and
best posted men in the country.
Lumpkin Democrat: The populists have
been trying to organize the negro in this
county for the last three months at least.
Comparatively speaking their efforts have
failed. Their many hours of lost sleep
spent in secret meetings trying to mislead
the uneducated negro promises a poor
harvest. The negro is tired of being mis
led.
Atlanta Journal: The greatest applause
that greeted Mr. Atkinson at Canton Sat
urday was when he mentioned Grover
Cleveland’s name, which appears to be
the signal for an old-fashioned Georgia
yell at all the campaign meetings in Geor
fia. At Gainesville, Spring Place and
lartwell, where the Hon. W. C. Glenn
spoke, the applause was deafening when
tits speaker alluded to the President and
his great work for democracy.
FLORIDA.
Jacksonville Times-Union: The corpo
ration leaders are busy gathering statis
tics and rounding up on paper all voters
who can, by any possible means, be per
suaded to vote their way to the polls in
October ; meantime the musical chink of
assessment coin continues to give forth its
pleasant melody from the campaign cof
fers at headquarters. It is said that fig
ures don’t lie; this has been often proven
a fallacy, and should be changed to read,
"figures don't vote.”

POLITICS IN LIBERTY.
Tho Senatorial Campaign Is Being
Pushed With Vigor.
HinesviHe, Ga., Aup'. 28 —The demo
crats in this county are petting them
seves in shape for repulsing the attacks
of the populists. Last night a democratic
club was organized here, and others will
bo immediately organized throughout the
county as rapidly as possible. Walter
\V. Sheppard, the democratic nominee for
the stale Senate, is doing excellent work.
He speaks somewhere every day. and is
working the district as it has never been
worked before. Mr. Sheppard fully real
izes that he has two formidable oppon
ents in the persons of Dr. has on of Tatt
nall, for the populists, and Uev. W. H.
Styles, colored, for the republicans;
hence he is at it with gloves off.
The democrats have not yet put out a
man for the legislature, but will do so on
the first Tuesday in September. Among
the names of those most prominently
mentioned are' D. B. Smith, W. Finley
Way, Dr. K. A. Quarterman and W. R
Waite. Anyone of these gentlemen
would make a valiant fight for democratic
principle*. ...
''reparations for a big democratic rally
on Sept. 4 are being made. Among the
speakers expected are, Col. Kufe Lester.
Tom S. Morgan, Wallace Fraser and
William Clifton.
Lib rty’s Teachora’ Institute.
