Chicago. Aug. 31.- The winding up of the
September transactions by either transferr
ing contracts into more distant months, of by
closing up the trades, was the notable feature
of to-day s business in wheat. That some
people did not make new deals is evidenced
by the widening of the difference between
September and December from 31*c yester
day to 31*@31 Vic at the close of to-day's ses
sion. T here was an Irregular action to prices,
the close being firm, with the strength bor
rowed from corn. December wheat opened
at 56’yc, sold between that and 57*c, closing
at 57*@57*c—*c higner than yesterday.
Clash wheat was in good demand. Prices
averaged *@*c per bushel higher.
Bulls in corn were firm in their position to
day. The telegrams from the corn belt
were many in number and emphatic in their
character. Every house on the floor was in
receipt of dispatches reporting worse condi
tions than have heretolore heen published.
In addition to this the contract stocks are low
and are centered in few hands. .September
shorts took alarm during the latter part of
the session to day and exhibited a willing
ness to pay a premium for that month. This
intensified the strength in the other futures,
prices advancing and closing at the top. .May
corn opened at 62-q r sold up to and closed at
a3*e —*@*c higher than yesterday, s>ep
tember closed with a gain ofl*e for the day.
C asii corn was bought freely bv shippers.
Prices w ere ‘jc higher than vesterduv.
< Hits—This market received strength from
wheat and corn at the same time presenting
an improvement on its 'own account. The
close was *c higher than yesterday for May.
Cash oats were in good demand. An advance
of ‘ 2 c over yesterday was made.
Provisions—On the principle that an ad
vance in corn must improve the price of hogs
and with an actual gain in the price of that
animal in this market, produce was strong.
The receipts of hogs keep dwindling away,
and less than are now arriving are predicted
in the future. Taking advantage of this sit
uation the outside was buying provisions to
day. with a resultant advance in value. At
the close January pork was 10c higher than
yesterday. January .ard 12'io higher and
January ribs 7*@loe higher.

The Cotton States Exposition Will
Have a Similar Attarction.
- Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 81.—The Atlanta ex
position next year will have a street or
place similar to the famous Midway
Plaisance of tho world's fair. It has
been dubbed “The Hullaballoo” by tho
exposition directors. They will try to
make it a big feature, hut the name lacks
the unique twang which helped to make
the Midway famous.
