POLITICS IN THREE STATES.
Comment* on Affair* in Qeorga, Flor
ida and South Carolina.
GEORGIA.
Blakeley Observer: Hines, like many
others, is a populist for office only. And
when disappointment in this direction is
overtaken, the whole greedy lot will for
sake the party they now so much
cherish.
Graphic: It looks like the
candidacy of one man is about to defeat
a _-ood measure. The people are unwil
j.ug to vote to increase the number of su
preme court judges if it means a position
forGober, and as die seems to have the
pull a vote for an increase really means a
v ie for him. . We do not pretend to sav
be is guilty or not for we do not know,
but the name of a judge should be like
that of a vestal virgin, above reproach.
Meriwether Vindicator: A Meri
wether third party disciple of Tom Wat
son says the colored man is feeling the
elect of bad legislation. “Yes,” said an
i'd colored man standing by, •-bless the
lu'rd, we feels it in lower taxes and more
school money to educate our children.”
The third party “wrighter,” like the boy
the calf ran over, had nothing more to
sav He felt for once that the old colored
man had more sense than he.
Karly County News: A third party
speaker, Rev. Mr. Dykes, in a speech last
Tuesday night, said that it was getting
time for congress to adjourn and come
home. It was a revelation to him when
he was told that congress had been ad
journed nearly a month, and yet this man
is a leader, is heaping abuse, in his wild
freiuies, upon the heads of all democrats
and is asking men to follow him in it.
However, stupendous ignorance and un
limited gall can move some poor people.
Oglethorpe Echo: Georgia owns one of
the best railroads in the south, but it was
a failure and a dead expense to the state
until it was leased for a term of twenty
years to an individual. It has been suc
cessfully operated under individual con
trol and management, but when the state
controlled it an annual appropriation was
necessary to keep up the running ex
penses. Notwithstanding this striking
object lesson there are a few- soreheads
who want the government to own all
railroads, telegraph and telephone lines.
Bnd. according to all experiment up to
date, incur an enormous output to defray
the running expenses. The great masses
are not ready to undertake apy such a
wild-cat scheme.
Columbus Enquirer-Sun: An interest
ing feature of our Atlanta dispatch this
morning is a review of tho fight that is
being made on Judge George Gober in
certain quarters, and a defense of the
udge by one of his friends. Tho light is
in some respects a curions one, the motive
of which at this distance is not very ap
parent. When some of these same charges
were made a year or two ago Judge Gober
requested an investigation by the legisla
ture, and a committee, with Hon. A. O.
Bacon as chairman, made a thorough ex
amination, with the result that Judge
Gober was completely exonerated. The
fight now does not look like a fair one and
smacks of political persecution. The
judge, however, is able to take care of
himself and has a host of strong friends
who believe in him and will stand by him.
FLORIDA.
Fernandina News: Those corporation
papers which accuse St. Clair-Abrams of
misrepresenting Judge Boggs, should not
forget that that gentleman in his origi
nal reference to Maj. Marks' complicity
in the Winter Park scandgl, declared that
he believed him guilty a fact which did
not, however, render him averse to lend
ing him hip support.
Madison Recorder: Call and Dough
erty met on the stump in Volusia county
last week. The Record says their four
discussions were very unnecessary, very
uncalled for and very undemocratic. The
senator accused the ex-congressman of
trying to bribe Dyalof Nassau to bolt the
Nassau county convention, which Dough
erty denied, but said he had offered to
furnish Dyal 11,000 to get him (Dyal)
elected senator from Nassau. Dyal's
sworn statement is against this construc
tion, however.
Jacksonville Metropolis: “Alien capi
talists” is what the "reformers” and in
dependents call every wealthy man who
comes to Florida to invest ins money.
This shows how much of a friend is the
average “reformer” and independent of
Florida. By their method of reasoning
one office-seeker (just what are “reform
ers'’ and independents) is more valuable
to the state than the millions of dollars
brought here by capitalists and put into
railroads, hotels, steamship lines and into
reclaiming swamp lands Compare, if
you please, the relative benefit to
Florida's prosperity Call and Abrams,
"reformers,” and Flagler -and Disston,
capitalist?.
SOUTH CAROLINA.
Aiken Journal and Review: The muni
cipal election on Monday was an object
lesson which we wish could have been
sben by every democrat in this county
be he a Tillmanite or an anti. From first
to last this election was a scramble for
the colored vote, in which whisky and
money' were freely used. Should the
white people of this state ever divide and
appeal is made to the colored vote, just
such an election and unseemly scramble
as took place in Aiken on Monday would
be the result.
Akin Recorder: As things are being
run now, wo will soon have no Demo
cratic party in South Carolina, unless an
aggressive fight is made for its mainten
ance. Tillman has abused the party and
<ione all he could to degrade it in tho
eyes of his followers; and openly pro
claims that he now only awaits encour
agement frogt the west to leave the
Party and take his followers with him.
The life of true Democracy in this state
is now at stake, and the convention is to
devise measures to keep it alive, and
give it new- vigor.
News and Courier: We do not think
'hat the nomination of a state ticket is
essential to the reorganization of the
party The convention has been called
“for the purpose of reorganizing the
Democratic party in South Carolina,”and
' for the purpose of considering the politi
cal situation in the state,’" etc. In tho
opinion of a majority of the de-inocrats in
the state the political situation is not
*uch as to warrant the nomination of a
tp'ket, while we believe a uia orit.y of
democrats to be in favor of reorganizing
the party. Reorganization does not mean
ihe making of nominations, for the call
mr the convention expressly provides
that the delegates to the convention shall
take - such action as their collective wis
d'-m may suggest for the public welfare.’’
1 be political situation in the state” is
"uch that “the public welfare" would
not be promoted by tne nomination of a
state ticket.
