tH OI (.HT HE WAS TO BE BURNED.
Thunilerholt’* SinoUlnn Jail Strlkpa
Terror to a Prlaonr.
t ’m Kavanaugb, the ex-policeman, had
ijl time of It at Thunderbolt Sunday.
H. had a dispute with a friend which led
t blows and the result was that both
-e arrested and locked up in the station
house.
About two hours afterward the nelgh
bori'.'K>d of the station house was aroused
by cries of “Fire! murder! help! -1 and
• hose who rushed to the scene saw smoke
issuing from every window. The place
was opened and it was found that the
blankets in the cell occupied by Kav
anaugh were on tire. The blaze was quickly
ext nguished. It was a cheap pair of blan
kets that burned and the loss was small.
Kavanaugh said that he was smoking
a cigarette when he dropped asleep and
he supposed that the blankets caught Are
from the cigarette. Bond was furnished by
a frien l and the prisoners were released.
Marshals Wood and Harmon were on
ti ir way to the "jug” with a negro whom
trey had just arrested when they heard
the cries for help and saw smoke issuing
from the windows. The prisoner took it
for granted that this was the customary
method of treating prisoners in the Sunday
suburb as a reminder of the future state
of those who violated the laws of that
,-ity and made desperate efforts to es
cape. It was not until the officers as
sured him that the Are would be put out
before he should be locked up that he
( eased his struggles.
SHE \\ VHTS SIO,OOO DAMAGES.
Charlotte Jackson Suing the Stan
dard )H Company for Her Hus
band's Dentil.
The suit of Charlotte Jackson against
the Standard Oil Company for *IO,OOO dam
ages was tried in the city court yester
day.
The plaintiff claims damages on account
of the death of her husband, Warren
Jackson, which came about In a peculiar
manner. A laborer at the yards of the
Standard Oil Company was ordered to
go into an oil tank to wash It out one
day In October, 1892. He was overcome
by the heavy gases In the bottom of the
tank and rendered unconscious, when
Jackson, seeing! his condition. Jumped
into the tank, tied a rope around the
man's body and got him out. In doing so,
however, he himself was overcome by the
noxious gases and afterward died.
Jackson’s wife is now suing to recover
damages for her husband's death. She
states he was 25 years old, in good health
and was making *8 a week at the time
of his death. The case was argued by
Maj. P. W. Meldrim for the plaintiff and
Mr. S. B. Adams for the defendant. Judge
MacDonell will charge the jury this morn*
ing at 10 o’clock.
DRAWN BY THREE HORSES.
A Third Horse Added to Xo. IVs En
gine.
The new' heavy Are engines at head
quarters will soon be drawn by three
horses abreast instead of two as at pres
ent. The engine is too heavy for two
horses to pull easily and the purchase of
another horse for this purpose has been
authorized. The tongue now in use will
be taken out and a pair of patent shafts,
one arm of whch will be movable, will
be substituted.
The stall of the right hand horse will
be in the rear of the stall of the center
horse. When the alarm sounds the cen
ter horse will rush into place Just as he
does now on the right. His doing so will
cause the raised shaft to fall into place
at his side.
The third horse will run through the
stall of the second horse and take his
position on the right. The arrangement
is very simple and Is in use in Are de
partments in other cities. Chief Puder
is also thinking of having the aerial truck
drawn by threo horses, as it is very
heavy.
TO ANSWER FOR SUNDAY SELLING,
The First Violation luilrr tle New
Ail ministration.
The first case for violation of the law
against Sunday liquor selling since the
new administration went into office will
< ome up in the police court this morn
ing.
W. J. Allen, who runs a green grocery
on East Boundary street is the party
charged with the offense. Allen was placed
on the docket Sunday by instruction of
*'h'u*f McDermott after it had been re
ported to him that Allen’s place was open.
It seems that Allen has a bar in connec
tion with his green grocery. The green
groceries are allowed to keep open for a
short while on Sunday morning for the de
l*v ry of meat to their customers. The
evidence, it is understood, will go to show
that Allen used the green grocery busi
ro ss as a blind for his liquor business.

THE FIRST THING IN THE MORNINQ
take a little Carlsbad Sprudel
Salt in a glass full of water. That
will set you right and keep you
right, if you’re inclined to be bil
ious or dyspeptic or constipated.
People wonder,sometimes, why
it is that the Carlsbad treatment,
the world’s remedy for habitual
constipation, should be recom
mended for diarrhoea and such
disorders, too. Simply, because
it leads the stomach and bowels
naturally into a healthy condi
tion, whatever their derange
ments—it doesn’t accomplish its
results "by harmful irritation, as
most pills and purgatives do.
Beware of imitations sold as
“improved” or “artificial”
Carlsbad Salt.
The only genuine Carlsbad
Salt, with all the properties of
the Sprudel Spring solidified,
has the seal of the city of Carls
bad and tne signature of “ Eisnfr
& Mendelson Cos., Agents, New
York,” on every bottle All
others are worthless imitations.
