HELD t P 111 CUBA.
E. c. B*4tet' Parly 'arroundrd by
KimniaU Bayonrii.
From the Philadelphia Press.
New York, April 25.—The steam yacht
Oneida with E. C. Benedict, tier owner,
and D Forest Manice and James Ross
aboard, returned to-day from a month's
cruise In southern waters, with her log
book full of amazing narratives. The
boat left here March 27. The following
jay she was driven to the Delaware
breakwater by a howling gale, but the
blow subsided shortly and the Oneida
w ent on her way again to the West Indies.
From Punta P.assa, the yacht bore away
to Cuba, and after a quick run picked up
a pilot off the coast. At his solicitation
the yacht dropped anchor oft the govern
ment dock at Havana. Then the three
gentlemen clambered into a launch and
went ashore.
They had gone only a few paces when
a very untidy person in white uniform
I. their passage with the business
end of a bayonet. Presently the three
Americans were surrounded by a guard,
on all sides they were hedged in by
bonnets, and they were in prospect of
spending the day there when a Turk hap
j.. ned to come within range of the vocal
bombardment. The Turk spoke beth
Knglish and Spanish, but the soldiers re
fused to accept any explanation. Even
tually the Turk volunteered to go in
search of an officer, and after the three
Americans had been imprisoned nearly
half an hour the Turk returned with
one.
When the situation was explained to
bint he was profuse in his apologies. He
berated the soldiers for their stupidity
and wound up matters by giving a pass
port to carry the bearers through any
part of the island. While in Cuba the
there were little impressed with the
Strength of the insurgents. According to
Mr. Benedict, the alleged Insurrection is
simply an uprising among the negro la
borers. The upper class of Spaniards, he
says, deplore the outbreak and are doing
what they can to have it come to an end.
WERE MARRIED ABROAD.

11. P. Belmont Said In Have Wedded.
From the Philadelphia Press.
New York, April 26.—A rumor gained
considerable circulation and credence to
day in the upper circles of the "Four Hun
dred” here to the effect that Mrs. Willie
K. Vanderbilt and Mr. Oliver H. Perry
Belmont were quietly married ten davs
ago on the continent, where they have
been traveling.
