STRANGE TAKE OF THE SKA.
Pirates Said *o Half Sacked a Dutch
Tfaarl In the Mediterranean.
From the Near York Tribune.
Washington. May 22.—A stirring tala of
the sea, that reads like a romance or
Stevenson or Pyle, comes to the state de
partment in a dispatch from Richard L.
Sprague, acting United States consul at
Gibraltar, under date of May I.
According to the account furnished to
the department by Mr. Sprague, the steam
tug Hercules, on the afternoon of April
30, towed into Gibraltar bay the Dutch
brigantine Anna, which had been flying
signals of distfes oft Europa Point. The
csperiences of the Anna, according to the
story told by one of her orew, recall the
worst days of piracy. On March 19 she
set sail from Bari, a port In the Adriatic,
with a cargo of oil, and on Sunday, April,
26, became becalmed about seven miles
from shore, near Alhucemas bay, In the
Rift country, between Mellila and Ceuta.
She was manned by a captain, a mate,
three seamen and a cook. About 2 or 3
o'clock that afternoon a boat approach’d
from shore, manned by seven or eight
Moors. They were savage-looking fel
lows. stripped naked to the waist, with
heads shaved clean of hair except a long
tuft on top. Breechloading rifles and long
knives were their arms. When within
hailing distance the Moors called in Span
ish to the brigantine to lower sail. Tills
order not being obeyed, they began tiring
on the vessel. As the boat came along
side, the crew armed themselves with
hatchets and crow-bars, and one of the
Riflians, who attempted to board, was
struck down by the mate with a blow
from a crow-bar. A volley was returned,
and the mate fell. Seising his revolver,
the only lirearm on board, Capt. Velvls
began to use It on the pirates, but he had
tired one shot only when he was wounded
in the hand. Meanwhile the wounded
mate had proceeded aft, where he was
tired on again and fell. Four bullets hat
entered his body. Then the captain was
permanently disabled by a shot wound in
the stomach.
About this time several other boats put
out from shore, and resistance was out of
the question. Reaping on board, the pi
rates began their work of plunder. The
ship's boat was lowered, and bedding,
cooking utensils, compasses, side lights,
spare sails, a portion of the cargo, all the
provisions except suit meat, and many
other things, even the cabin door, were
loaded into this and the boats of the pi
rates and taken to land. (Several trips
■were made the boats coming and going the
whole afternoon. Tt> complete the work
the pirates took even the shoes from the
feet of the crew and the clothes from<
their hacks.
When night came the buccaneers left the
ship, and, a light breeze springing up, the
sailors endeavored to steer for the Span
ish coast, although without compass or
lights. They sailed all that night and the
next day, using an old cotton shirt in day
light and burning oakum after dark as
signals of distress, hut, although several
vessels passed within sight, no attention
was paid to the distressed brigantine.
At 4 o’cloek the next morning Capt. Vel
vis died, and after many hardships the
Anna was sighted about 4 p. in., on April
SO by the Hercules, and brought Into the
harbor. The mate, W. Smith, who had
been badly wounded in both thtghs, in the
abdomen and the right hand, was taken
to the Colonial hospital In a critical condi*
tlon.
The Anna hailed from Old Pekela. In
Holland, where captain and mate lived.
The consul for the Netherlands at Gi
braltar is investigating the outrage.
BLIND MEN FIERCE FIGHTERS.
Two of Them Inflicted Severe
Moumlii With Canes on Two Who
Could See.
From the New York Times.
During a battle royal, which took place
last night, John Phillips, a blind peddler
of 410 Third avenue, and Albert Oftenn, a
carpenter of 346 Fast Twenty-fifth street,
two of the five combatants, were so bad
ly injured that they had to be taken to
Bellevue hospital. Phillips had a bad cut
on the fot'e head and a possible fracture
of the skull. Oftenn had numerous
bruises on the right forearm, and a scalp
wound which may prove to be a fracture
of the skull.
Phillips, who is 40 years old, and who
peddles matches and pencils, lives in the
rear of 440 Third avenue, with a man
called "(Terry/’ Phillips is totally blind,
but “Gerry” is able to make his way dur
ing the day, but at night is as blind as
Phillips. Last night Phillips’ son, John,
who is said to be a wayward youth, met
< >scar Winderroll, a tailor, who lives on
the third floor of the-front house. The boy,
who is accused of taunting Winderroll'
whenever they meet, immediately re
sumed his bantering.
The tailor took him by the ear and led
him howling up stairs. The boy’s father
heard his cries, and grasping a heavy
cane, made his way to Wlnderroll’s apart
ments by following the noise. He could
not enter for several minutes, by which
time Winderroll had got out. The blipd
man found Offenn and at once attaced
him with the cane. He first struck him
over the head and then beat him about
the body and right forearm, which the
victim had raised to ward off the blows.
While he was showering blows upon Of
fenn, Winderroll returned, followed by
“Gerry,” who had heard that Phillips was
making trouble. The fight went on.
“Gerry” taking sides with Phillips, and
the tailor attempting to aid his friend, the
carpenter.
The bl|hd men were both possessed of
t feat strength, and also possessing just at
that time good sized walking canes, they
succeeded in giving their antagonists such
a heating that they were forced to cry
out for help.
The victims were reinforced by Police
man Louis Rott of the East Thirty-fifth
street station. Almost immediately upon
Ron's entering, Phillips made for him with
an oath, threw' himself.upon him and boro
him to the floor. For almost a minute the
Mind man and the policeman struggled.
Phillips raining blows upon any part of
’he policeman's body he could reach. Rott
struck Phillips a blow upon the forehead
which cut a good sized gash in the flesh.
This subdued, the blind man. who was
taken in an ambulance to Bellevue hO
rital, along with his victim, Offenn. His
companion, "Gerry,” and the tailor were
hoi arrested.
R.v some singular fortune, none of their
bmises was serious, and they remained at
home. While the physicians were trying
to ascertain whether the carpenter's scalp
wound was a fracture, he became unruly
and left the hospital for his home.
