BUSINESS CONTINUES BAD.
THE YEAR JUST CI.OSED FAR FROM
SATISFACTORY IX TRADE.
The Lint of Failure* For 1890 the
Lonxeit of Any Yenr Since Sneh
RreordN llmr Keen Kept With the
Mnxle Exception of —The To
tal Number For 18*90 15,112 and in
1803 15.500.
New York, Doe. 31.—Bradstreet's, Jan. I,
will say: "General trade has been rather
more quiet and this week proves one of t he
dullest of the dull season which has fol
lowed the fortnight of revived demand
early in November. The uneasiness last
week caused by northwestern bank fail
ures is continued by similar embarrass
ments at Chicago and Minneapolis. These
bank failures seem to he the outcome of
conditions originating in the banks, and
not due to the situation of general trade.
"Unseasonable weather, the making of
inventories, and the customary absence of
demand in wholesale lines, have combined
to produce more titan the usual holiday
dullness. More favorable reports Include
heavy exports of flour and general mer
chandise from Tacoma to China and ,Ta
pan, the receipt at Chicago of a satisfac
tory amount of orders for dry goods for
spring delivery and an increased total vol
ume of business in 18% among Si. Louis
shoe manufacturers and jobbers, and job
bers of dry goods, as compared with 1895.
"Manufacturers of woollen goods are
buying raw material only to cover orders
ireceived. Large stocks of unsold print
cloths continue to depress quotations, and
merchants in leading staple lines at the
larger distributing centers do not antici
pate an early improvement in business.
"Prices of oals, petroleum, cotton anl
print cloths are lower and buyers of west
ern and southern brands of pig iron report
a cut of 25 cents a ton.
"Prices are unchanged and comparative
ly iirm for flour, pork, lard, sugar, anthra
cite coal and steel billets. Since the
break In iron and steel prices, consumers
appear inclined to await developments.
“The list of business failures throughout
the United States for the calendar year
18% is. with one exception, the longest
since records of this character have been
compiled. It remains for the panic year
1893 to present a larger total, and for
that year and for the year 1884, which was
also visited by financial disaster, to fur
nish larger aggregates of liabilities of
those who failed in business.
"The total number of failures during 18%
is 15,112, nil increase of 16 per cent, com
pared with 1895, in which year business
embarrassments increased 2 per cent.,
contrasted with the year before.
"In 1894, which was marked by extreme
depression in commercial and industrial
circles, the total number of failures fell
off sharply, fully 18 per cent, from the
record in 1893, when the aggregate was 13,-
£BO, the largest total ever reported for a
calendar year.
“During 18% the aggregate assets of
those embarrassed in business were near
ly 80 per cent, of the total liabilities, the
significance of which lies In its contrast
with the record of a year ago. when the
proportion of assets to liabilities was 65
per cent., anil to tin exhibit for 1894, when
the proportion was 53 per cent.
"The extraordinary heavy total of bus
iness embarrassments in the panic year,
1593, was almost paralleled in 18%, not
withstanding a falling off of nearly one
fifih in number in 1894. The $147,000,000 lia
bilities of those f ailing during the past
iwelve months is challenged only by cor
responding totals ill 1894 and 1893, re
spectively $248,000,000 and $8)2.000,000. The
aggregate of $148,000,000 of assets Is an in
crease over the corresponding total one
year ago of fully 70 per cent., Is $14,000,000
larger than-the like total in 1894, and has
lie In exceeded only by the total assets of
failing traders in the panic year 1893.
New York, Dec. 31.—R. G. Dun & Cos.,
in their weekly review' of trade Saturday,
Jan. 2, will say: "There have been more
commercial failures in 18% than in any
previous year except 1893, and about 14,890
against 13,197 last year, with liabilities of
about $225,000,000, against $173,196,000 last
year, an increase in number of about 12
per cent., and in liabilities of 29 per cent.
"The year closes w'lth an epidemic of
failures, mainly at the west, and in hanks
and loan and trust companies, or concerns
dependent on them. The action of clear
ing houses in various places indicates no
want of confidence, and several banks
which have failed will be enabled to pay
In full, but disclosures of unsoundness in
a few widely known institutions, in the
abnormal state of popular feeling, after
an excited contest on monetary issues, has
caused distrust and suspicion where it is
frequently undeserved.
"There has been no monetary pressure
to cause trouble, nor have Important
western products declined In value. There
has evidently been too liberal assistance
given by some fiduciary concerns to spec-

funds lias resulted since the first alarm
at two large failures, and the money then
sent, has all returned. Failures often
grow more frequent as annual settle
ments approach.
“In none of the industries has there been
activity the past week. Holiday dull
ness has been intensified by the failures
and the efforts of groat combinations to
make new arrangements. With Iron,
coke, wool, cotton and hides, all some
what lower, there is almost universal con
fidence that business will soon become
large and safer than before for a long
time.
"Cotton mills have enormous stocks of
unsold goods in some lines, the surplus of
print cloths being the largest ever known
and about a fourth of a year’s consump
tion.
“Wool sales decreased 24 per cent. In
the first four months and were smaller
than for five years; decreased % per cent,
in the second four months when new wool
was coming forward, and were much
smaller than ever known, except in the
panic of 1873; lull enormous, sales, mainly
speculative, made the aggregate during
the last, four mouths nearly equal to that
of last year.
"The volume of business during the
year 18% lias varied remarkably. Pay
ments through the clearing houses were
slightly larger in each of the first four
months than In 1895, but 20 per cent, smal
ler than in 1892. In the six months, May
and October inclusive, payments were
very much smaller than last year, 15 per
cent, in September, and in that month
and October, about 24 per cent, smaller
than in 1892. In November a small im
provement over 1895 appeared, and the de
crease from 1892 was but 12 per cent., but
in December payments were 9.8 per cent,
smaller than last year and 20.8 per cent,
smaller than in 1893. Railroad earnings
were slightly larger than last year In each
of the first seven months, and smaller
each month than 1892. In August and tno
later months there has been a decrease
as great as 12 per cent, in November from
1895 and 16.2 per cent, in August from 1892.
“The exports from New York in Decem
ber were 5 per cent, larger and imports 12
per cent, smaller than last ypar."
