Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 2.—Judge J. H.
Lumpkin to-day heard the application of
citizens of the county for an Injunction
preventing the county commissioners from
perpetuating the county police force. They
want the department abolished, and claim
to the court that it is organized without
the authority of law. The county com
missioners, in organizing the department,
•ought to evade the law by ha\ing the
officers 6worn in as deputy sheriffs, but
this, it is alleged, is no: legal, as th r y
have no power to station a party of sher
iffs all over the county. The decision of
the court has been reserved until next
Tuesday.
Behind the hill to abolish the county po
lice department there is another story.
Home time ago Chief Vomer of the depart
ment suspended two officers from duty—
Messrs. Herrington and Bradley. Bradley
■was a leading candidate for the office of
chief, and it was claimed that he and
Herrington were suspended under charges
of accepting bribes for political advant
ages, as by that means Chief Vernor
would rid himself of formidable opposi
tion.
The suspended men came back at Chief
Vemer with counter charges of a spicy
character. They alleged that he has been
drunk on duty; that he has been In the
habit of collecting fees which should go
Into the county treasury and putting them
Into his private pocket.
The chief is further charged with hav
ing on several occasions settled cases wi’h
offenders upon the payment of hush money
to him. One case cited is where a very
sportive couple, a man and a woman, de
cided to take a swim in a pond at Beil*
■wood. They had no bathing suits along,
but this did not deter them. Their con
duct scandalized the community and Chief
Verner was called In. but it is alleged
that Instead of placing the guilty ones
tinder arrest he settled with them for $49.
The chief is also charged with having
“pets.” One of these men, it is charged,
got aboard a trolley car bound for the
Chattahoochee river one night in compa
ny with a very gay young woman. This
“pet" took a notion that he would like to
*tee the coochee-coochee. and then and
there he turned out the lights and an ex
hibition was given while the car rolled on
toward the river. This was reported to
Chief Verner, but. it is alleged, that he
did not even reprimand his pet.

The Tammany Drove a Half Owner
of the Celebrated Farm.
Augusta. Ga.. Jan. 2.—Hon. Richard
Croker, Judge Morgan J. O'Brien, Hon.
John D. Crimmins and a party of other
■wi ll known New Yorkers were in Augusta
to-day. They were entertained by ex-Sen
ator Patrick Walsh, President D. B. Dyer
of the Augusta railway and other promi
nent citizens.
Mr. Croker left in the afternoon for Belle
Meade Farm, Tenn., in which he has an
Interest with Gen. Jackson.
Mr. Croker asked many questions about
Sir. Bryan’s recent lecture here.
The party were the guests of General
Manager Anderson of the Charleston and
Western Carolina railroad system.
Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 2.—Richard Croker of
New York stopped here to-night on his
way to Belie Meade Btock farm, near
Nashville, Tenn.
He was non-committal on politics until
pressed for a suggestion as to 1900. Then
be said deliberately: "Mr. McK.nley was
elected on the idea that repu' ~ an suc
cess would bring prosperity. Unless times
ftet better, Mr. Bryan or someone on his
line will be elected in 1900 by the most
overwhelming majority ever given to a
candidate for president.”

Brewton's plurality over Riggs Is 14. Mr.
Brewton is a son or B. B. Brewton or Bene,

The Investigation to Commence on
Jnn. 12.
Atlanta, Ga., Jan. 2.—Senator Yancey
Carter, who preferred the charges against
Judges Reed and Sweat, arrived in the
city this afternoon, ready to present the
names of his witnesses before the sub
committee which will meet on Monday, to
issue the subpoenas for the investigation.
The investigation will commence on the
12th.
This afternoon Senator Carter said that
he was ready with his report to the sub
committee in the case of Judge Reese, but
the charges against Judge Sweat have
been worked up by others, and he has not
yet seen the result of their work. In
speaking of the matter this afternoon
Senator Carter said that he had not had
time to do any traveling in search of wit
nesses and testimony, though he has done
the best he could to lay the cases before
the committee in such a way that they
can go to the bottom. He takes the posi
tion that it is the duty of the committee
to search for information, as well as for
him to do it.
Senator Carter’s charges against Judge
Sweat were based upon a publication in
the Looking Glass, and he intimated to
day that after the editor of that paper
had been called upon, he would leave It to
him and the committee to fight it out.
Judge Sweat will be represented at the in
vestigation by Hon. W. G. Brantley and
Judge Reese by Hon. Hal G. Lewis of
Greene county.
TALLAHASSEE TOPICS.
An Attractive Scene In tlie Streets of
Florida’s Capital.
Tallahassee, Fla., Jan. 2.—Thos. E. Halle,
a native of Carreden. S. C., and father of
Mrs. R. F. Taylor, died Thursday night,
at the residence of Justice Taylor of the
supreme court, after an illness of about
three months, with typho-malarial fever,
aged 73 years. The remains were taken to
Alachua county for burial, where he had
resided since 1854.
The following committee on the military
has been announced, to receive the visit
ing companies to the inaugural ceremonies
on Tuesday: Messrs. W. A. Rawls, Geo. B.
Perkins an l 1). MacLachlan.
Tallahasseeans witnessed an unusual
spectacle early Thursday morning. A
blonde miss, about the bewitching age of
16, with long flaxen hair, streaming down
her back, dressed in an up-to-date bloom
er costume, rode a bob-tail nag astride
through the main thoroughfare of the cap
ital city. She was accompanied by a one
eyed spectacled dude, with a pocket cam
era. and every time a darkie stopped to
gaze upon the novel procession, he would
snap his machine and catch the picture of
an amazed African,
