the Head and Was Taken to the
t lrtt Division Hospital—Go me
a lietter One Thun That
j'lnyed Thanksgiving Day—More
(.inner mid l.ess Squabbling—Tex.
i,. showed Great Improvement. ,
The foot ball team of the Fourth 1111-
no - went down in defeat before that of
, , First "Texas Regiment yesterday af
ternoon. The game was played at the
g 0 street ball park and resulted in a
eoore of 16 to 0 in> favor of the boys from
the I>one Star State.
One of the Fourth Illinois players was
si riously hurt. He was one of the young
ts[ men on the team, Oliver Loudon of
Company C, and his brother. Lieut. Lou
don who also played with Illinois, held
the boy's head In his lap until he was
taken off the field.
Young Loudon was taken to the hospital
of the First Division. A report received
from there last night was that he had
not recovered consciousness. It could be
seen that he was badly hurt. It is thought
his injury was caused by a kick, as there
was a bad bruise back ol the ear. One of
the Texans was also hurt during the game
and his place was filled. This was Spring
er and Strauch took his place.
The game was better in many respect
than that on Thanksgiving day between
the First Texas and the Forty-Ninth lowa,
when the teams played a tie. The Texans
rhowed marked improvement, their play
Being almost free from the fumbles that
wire rather too common in the Thanks
giving game. The game was also foster,
and there was not ns much time lost in
disputing decisions and appealing to the
referee.
There were also more star players in evi
dence. Dezavala of the Texas team was
the bright particular star, though Druese
don. Scott and Lieut. Keller of the same
eleven covered it with glory by their play.
Two end runs of flfty yards were made by'
Dezavala. Lieut. Loudon and, McKnight
were among the erackß of the Fourth.
The lirst touchdown was made by Keller
for Texas after sixteen minutes’ play and
Druesedow kicked a goal. The other two
wi re made in the second half by Dezavala
and Keller.Druesedow missed one of the
trials for goal and Keller missed the other,
thus leaving the score, when time was
called, at 16 to 0.
There was a lot of rooting going on for
the teams, though the Texans were the
leaders in it. The bands of both regiments
were on hand, and they also took part
in making a noise for a good play.
The remarks of some of the Texas sol
diers were a little rough at times. When
an. Illinois man would get laid out tem
porarily some Texan would shout “Give
him a shower bath” or “Turn him over
to MaJ. Harrison.” The point lies, of
course, in the Fourth Illinois having been
in provost duty and having had some of
the Texans, among .other aqjdjers, under
the shower baths.
A hospital steward was on hand to
look out for the injured players. His
mips out on the field and back W'ere made
i .te subject of some good-natured badinage.
"Hive him a pill,” some soldier would
shout. "Give him two. a black one and
n white one,” another would call.
“Tell him his is lying and mark him for
duty," would come still another shout.
The line-up of the two teams was as
follows:
Texas. Illinois.
Jackson right end Barton
Rogers right tackle Wallace
Waoeliter right guard Springer
’b halen center Harmon
Swoape ...left guard Cowan
Hardie left tackle.. Lieut. Loudon
Dezavala left end Coen
Langridge quarter Loudon
Druesedow ..right halfback Voris
B ott, capf left halfback McKnight
Lieut. Keller fullback June
Substitutes for Texas were Bateman,
Moore, Kidd, Cahoon and Harn. The Il
linois substitutes were Bailey, Strauch,
Rowland and Hayes.
Mr. J. l. Killorin was referee for the
tame, and Mr. Gordon Saussy was um
pire. The linesmen were Lieut. Teeter for
Illinois and Hillebrand for Texas.
QUARANTINE OFFICER COMPLAINS.
Ur. Linley Says That He Was Not
Properly ltecciveil on Michigan.
Quarantine Officer Linley complained
yesterday of the way he was received on
hoarding tile transport ’Michigan the other
day for the purpose of Inspecting her. In
a letter to Health Officer LeHardy, Dr.
Linley makes statements showing that he
"as improperly received.
hen the Michigan neared the quaran
tine station, Dr. Linley said he went out
'° her, but the vegsel wan not slowed up
sufficiently to make it safe for him to go
alongside. There seemed to he no one in
authority. Matters were made worse
when he did get alongside by some of the
1 'f w carelessly splashing tilth overboard,
which struck Dr. Linley and his oarsman.
J his did not arouse a great deal of sym
pathy, however, as there were no explana
tions, and the act seems to have gone un
noticed.
Climbing aboard Dr. Linley made an ef
fort to perform his duties, but he said
there was apparently no one in authority.
He made the inspection in a way, but it
was by no means as satisfac
tory as h might have been.
1 lr - Linley suggests in his let
ter that something be done to secure prop
er recognition for him, particularly on the
government transports. From American
Ports he, of course, has no right to in
spect vessels, but from Porto Rico and
oilier porls where there Is likely to be in
fection, it Is his understanding that the
inspections should lie made.
Health Officer LeHardy was not very
"’ell pleased with Dr. Linley’s treatment.
He referred the report to Mayor Meldrlm,
hut as he -was not In the city yesterday,
action on the matter will not be taken un
til he returns.
MAXWELL'S CASE CONTINUED.

William Maxwell, colored, charged with

ing with him In Carolina, was arraigned

hearing was postponed on account of the
precarious condition of the injured man.

Men as Nurses.
There isn’t one man in fifty thousand who
is a good nurse. The average man feels as
much out of place in a sick room as a bull
must in a china-store. His heart may be
ever so full of sympathy, but his feet are
heavy and his fingers clumsy.
In most cases when a woman’s general
health breaks down the original cause is
weakness or disease of the distinctly femi
nine organism. The only permanent cure
lies in the correction of all these disorders.
Husbands sbortld know that Dr. Pierce’s
Favorite Prescription is the only medicine
that invariably cures all ailments of this
nature without “local treatment” and
“examinations.” It acts directly on the
delicate and important organs concerned.
It makes them well and strong. It allays
inflammation, heals all internal ulceration
and stops debilitating drains. It soothes
and tones the nerves. Found at all medi
cine stores. An honest druggist won’t urge
upon you a substitute.
“ I had female trouble for many years,” writes
Mrs. A. Liugelhach, of Granger, Sweetwater Cos.,
Wyoming, “and tried many physicians until I
was completely discouraged. Finally I took Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription for six months,
and I soon found that I was completely cured. 1
had been so had I could hardly walk across the
floor, hut i am now well and strong, thanks to
Dr. Pierce."
No family should be without Dr. Pierce’s
Common Sense Medical Adviser. It used
to cost si.so; now it is free. Paper-covered
copy, 21 one-cent stamps, to cover mailing
only; doth binding 31 stamps. Over
1,200,000 American homes now contain
copies of this great work. Address Dr.
