Lieutenancy.
Lieut. W. L. Grayson of the Republican
Flues was chosen by his company last
night to he captain. The election was
unanimous. This was a compliment of
w ,i,'h Lieut. Grayson may well lie proud,
lie has a gallant company, and one that
ra k'd with the best (.hat represented
Guirgia in the volunteer service.
A committee apiwinted a week ago re
ported to the company at last night's
m" ting, nominating Lieut. Grayson as
captain. The nomination was net unex
pected, os the entire company wanted
Lieut. Grayson to be in command, and
the committee was well aware of it.
The meeting was presided over by Re
tiring Captain J. J. Gaudry, who has
f.en a member of the Rliies for twenty
mo years, and who has been one of the
most popular and efficient commanding
officers the company has ever known. He
reci ived the report of the committee, and
t lie election followed. This was informal,
as no order has yet been issued by the
i iovernor for an election to be held. This
will be forthcoming, however, and the
. icice of Lieut. Grayson will be legalized.
Lieut. Grayson is a young man, and de
servedly popular with the Blues. He has
done much for the company, and has been
prime factor in the maintenance of the
high standard of excellence the command
has preserved. He became a member of
t ie company in September of 1887, and was
advanced to a sergeantcy. This position
lie resigned to join the Guards, Company
A. He remained for a year with that or
ganization, and was then transferred, re
turning to the Blues as a private. A com.
petitive examination for the selection of
a sergeant being about to be held. Lieut.
Grayson entered it. He made the highest
average of those who compered, and was
appointed to the position. He was also
elected treasurer of the company.
His election to the second lieutenancy
of the company was in 189t>. His service
s a commissioned officer was excellent.
When the Blues volunteered for service
in the war with Spain, Lieut. Grayson
went with them, being promoted to the
first lieutenancy in the service. He was
also chosen by Lieut. Col. Brooks of the
First Georgia to serve as adjutant of the
First Battalion, a position he tilled with
admirable success. Col. A. R. Lawton of
the regiment also appointed Lieut. Gray
son the manager of the regimental post
exchange, and under his direction It prov
ed a flourishing establishment. He was
mustered out of the service at Macon on
Nov. 18.
Lieut. Grayson has many friends In the
ity who will congratulate him upon his
• lection. The belief is that he will make
Lie Blttej an excellent captain, and that,
under his command, the company will
continue to rank as one of the very best
of 'he First Regiment.
A committee was appointed at the meet
ing to report next Monday night upon
candidates for the lieutenancies, which
will be vacant as soon as Lieut. Grayson
is elected formally to the captaincy and
the resignation of First Lieutenant George
XV. Drummond is accepted. Ii is tVie opin
ion among the men that Mr. Lacey D.
Me’!, who was second lieutenant while the
company was in the volunteer service, wiil
in made first lieutenant. It is understood
that there ate two or three of the ser
geants of the companies whom their
friends are pushing forward for the sec
ond lieutenancy, and that there will be
a warm contest when the report of the
committee is brought in.
A number of new members were re
ceived at the meeting, and the future of
the Bines as an organization seems to be
insured. Talk of disbandment may be ap
plied to other companies, but the Blues
wiil have none of it. They are getting
i gill down to work to see that their com
mand lives through ivhai a good many
military men believe will be an apathy,
cl at so much experience lately gained
in the army. It is the opinion of not a
1 w that many of the young men of the
ty ire surfeited with military, but others
maintain that the spirit of Mgrs was given
an impetus by the war and that there
will shortly be a great revival of military
interest.

of the digestive and nutritive organs. If
a man’s stomach is right and his liver

recommend a commutation of Small’s sen
tence w'ithout swerving from the strict
line of Ills duty. Small’s case, he said,
was one of the worst that had ever come
before him. He had shot down the first
oflieer who undertook to arrest him, and
had then deliberately prepared himself to
resist arrest. It was strange. Judge Fal
lignnt said, that of the number of men
who had been hung during his administra
tion of office that this was the first ap
peal made in behalf of any condemned
murderer, and yet this was the worst
case of all.
Solicitor General Osborne said that he
thoroughly concurred in his honor’s opin
ion. It would be improper for him to lis
ten fo an appeal for mercy, he said, that
was not based upon some point of law
or evidence. He was thoroughly convinc
ed of Small's guilt. It did not occur to
Small’s counsel until the third trial to
make the point that Neve might have
been killed by McCabe's bullet. This
was confronted with Small’s own state
ment, mg.de at the previous trial, that he
had shot Neve. Mr. Osborne said that he
considered it the worst case that had come
before the Superior Court in ten years.
"Small dS aT dangerous man," he said,

TAKING IN THE COUNTRY.
Trick Cyclists Slilels and Phillips
Doing the South,
Rube Shieis anil “George Phillips, alias
“Willie and Cousin ’Will,” trick cyclists,
struck Savannah yesterday. They are
touring the South, giving exhibitions In
the towns through which they pass.
Shieis is an unique character. A few
years ago he was an actor with a natural
adaptability for taking “hayseed" parts.
Being a devotee of the wheel, he conceiv
ed the idea of making up as a country
jpy and gojng opt with a bicycle to chal
lenge fame and fortune as a specialist,
and it has proved a winning card. Since
that time he has traveled the country
over, appearing in theaters, on the streets,
at fairs and all sorbs of gatherings attired
in his hayseed outfit, usually under en
gagements to advertise some make of
wheel. His innocent. unsophisticated
manners, his evident greenness, his ex
tremely clever makeup, his country drawl
and general "away from homo" conduct
are calculated to deceive the oldest inhab
itant.
Shieis got some reputation by riding
down the capifol steps awheel at Wash
ington last spring. He chose the west ap
proach to the capitol and bumped down
something like 100 steps without a mis
hap. He and ills, partner will give an
exhibition in front of the De Soto this
morning at 10 o’clock and in from of the
Pulaski at noon.
AA Ito AA the Drill f
Camp Onward, Savannah. Dee. 5, 1895.
Editor Morning News: With no attempt at
gaining notoriety for myself, I wish to
call attention to an article of the 3d inst.,
under the heading of San Antonio Zouaves
Drill, in which mention was made of their
entered **ifttut one competitive drill,
and that one at Galveston, Tex., and that
they went down in noble defeat, having
been beaten by the fraction of n jioint by
the crack Neeley Zouaves of Memphis,
Trn. In this, t beg to differ. The drill
took place at San Antonio, Tex. The
Zouaves were not defeated by the Neeley*,
but by tlie Dallas Zouaves, now known as
Company K, Second Texas Regiment, of
which 1 was a member until recently
transferred to the First Texas Regiment.
If ihere is any honor or glory to lie gained
by defeat I think It should lie given to
the Dallas Zouaves.
At the last Internationa! drill and en
campment held In Texas, July, 1897. there
were three entries for the best drilled
zouave company ill the United Slates. In
addition to the honor, there was a purse
of $1,750 offered. The Neeleys were euc
cesstui iii capturing the first pr.z- SI,OOO,
the Dallas Zouaves the second prize 3300,
and the San Antonio Zouaves the third
nrize. $250. As this mistake of your in
formant may cause hard feelings to exist
lielween members of both companies, when
they hove returned to their horn* * in the
Lone Star Slate, 1 trust you will give this
space. With all due respect to Capt. Her
nandez and hi* gallant men, I teg leave lo
wis'd for his and their future success.
