Secretary Cook’s Denial.
Atlanta, Dec. 24.-(Special).-Thcre is a
good deal of uneasiness at the capitol over
rumors that Col. \\. A. XX imhish, special
attorney for the Western and Atlantic
Kaiiroad. is to lie replaced.
According to the report, which started
b, fore the legislature adjourned, Col. E.
T. Brown of Athens is ining urged upon
Gov. Candler for the position. Col. Brown
was an original Candler man and an ac
i
Gov. Atkinson recommended that the
service of special attorney be dispensed
with, but it was made to appear to the
legislature that the special knowledge of
Col. Wimhish could render him of great
value to the state in future settlement of
questions involving the state road, and
the office was continued on that idea, and
at the same time a joint resolution was
passed by both houses commending Col.
Wimbish, and virtually recommending his
retention by the Governor.
The passage of this resolution Is what
brought to the surface the story that Col.
Frown was being groomed for I lie place.
Since the legislature adjourned Gov. Cand
ler has received a large number of letters
end telegrams bearing upon the subject,
mostly citing the action of the legislature
in recommending Col. Wimbish. No one
directly concerned has much to say in
regard to the matter. Col. Wimbish will
not talk, and is making no effort to hold
the place.
Some well informed ones, however, de
clare that the fight going on behind the
scenes Is a very warm one, and until it
is settled by a public announcement
from the Governor the chief executive will
have little comfortable rest.
Secretary Cook Protests.
Secretary of State Phil Cook takes de
cided exceptions to the stories being print
ed throughout the state to the effect that
he refused to permit a portrait, of Presi
dent McKinley to be placed above thq,
door of his office among the decorations
at the capitol in honor of the recent visit
of the nation's chief. In order to set the
matter straight, Secretary Cook made pub
lic the following interview to-day:
"The impression that I refused to allow
President McKinley's picture huiffc over
my door is a false one. No effort was
made by any one to hang a picture over
the door, and there was no request from
any source for one to be hung there, and.
therefore, there was never an occasion for
any objection.
“I offered no discourtesy to these dis
tinguished guests. Asa matter of fact, I
entertained several of them In my office.
Gen. Wheeler, Gen. Wilson and others
v.ere there for some time examining the
lattleflag of my father’s regiment and
talking about it. These gentlemen had
come into the office to escape the crush
in the corridors, where the President was
holding a reception.
"The same day I attended at the resi
dence of my sister. Mrs. Peel, a recep
tion tendered the presidential party by the
Army and Navy League. Mrs. McKinley,
five members of the cabinet and several
generals of the army were there.
“I have always entertained the opinion
that it was wrong for President McKinley
to put negroes over white people. 1 be
lieve in the supremacy of the Anglo-
Saxon race, and have no apology to offer
for that opinion, but I have enough sense
of propriety to treat with courtesy any dis
tinguished guests, who corns, here by invi
tation.”
C'onvletn Helmmcd.
Mayor Collier to-day granted freedom to
m prisoners confined In the stockade for
violation of city ordnances. This was his
Christmas gift to these unfortunates.
They were all lined up and set free at noon
after having been served with a good din
ner. A large percentage of the liberated
offenders celbrated the event on Decatur
street to-night, and some of them will he
back in the stockade again Just as soon
as the mill of Justice can get them there.

Dec. 16, 1893, says:
"While-the grippe Is so prevalent, and as
one of its victims that found relief, I can
not forbear giving the public one of the
secrets and best ways to get rid of the dis
tressing effects. After suffering two weeks
with it in Atlanta, with my head, ears
and throat all involved—bones aching and
all the other disagreeable symptoms—after
I had tried medicines, and Dr. Calhoun
had blown through both my ears from my
nose, at his suggestion I came here. I have
been here one week, and while I am not
entirely over the effects of the attack. I
am so much better that I do not hesitate
to commend the place to any fellow suf
ferer. In fact, I deem it a duty to do so.
• * * The object of this letter is not to
advertise the springs, but to tell my
friends who have the grippe, or have had
it, to come here and get relief. The pro
prietor says his faith Is so firm that any
man or woman suffering with the disease
who comes and uses the water as he di
rects and remains for two weeks or a
month and is not relieved will get his
board free. As sure as you come you will
be paid for the trouble. I believe the cure
