‘ ir j can hardly understand why the
buckler- of the North and East do not have
more competition.
Inquiries made by Mr. Egan have devel
, lhe fact that the shipbuilders all
along fi,e Atlantic coast are too busy to
, hink about taking any more work just at
present. Their yards are full and they
have work for months ahead. It Is learned
ih.u offers of work have even been refused
owing to the inability of the builders to
do all that is demanded of them.
With such a demand as this for work
and the inability of the established yards
to accommodate all who, want work done,
it seems to Mr. Egan that there is heed for
additional yards. If there is more than
the yards now in operation can attend to,
he does not see why other capital should
rot be put in ship building ventures and
made to pay as well as that invested in
the North and East.
•Now is the time,” he said, “when Sa
vannah business men and capitalists who
have mum V 10 invest should get together
for th( establishment of shipyards. They
could find plenty of business, and there is
nn ri ,ason why the thing should not pay.
Savannah is as near the great iron Helds
of Alabama as the yards at the North are
to Pittsburg, and the rales on material
for building purposes would be just as
equitable as those that are in effect there.
The iron is of every bit as good quality',
ami in six months time an immense plant
for making steel will ire in operation at
Birmingham. This will turn out as fine
products as any plant in the country by
anew process. Lumber can be obtained
from this section, and I can see no reason
why this port should not be made a great
shipbuilding center. ■ All that 13 needed is
for capital to take hold of the matter.
“Why, yes; there is plenty of land along
the river adapted to the purpose. East
of the city there is ground to spare. It
may be a little low, but filling could be
done ami there should be no difficulty
about a location. Yards ought to be es
tablished for building vessels of wood or
steel, steamers or sailing craft, and I hope
it will not be long before the matter is un
dertaken.”
Mr. Bryan Snyder, general passenger
agent of the St. Louis and San Francisco
Railway, was here yesterday, shaking
bonds with a lot of old friends and meet
ing new ones. His trip to Savannah was
on business, iho energetic general passen
ger agent of the big Western line always
having business and the profit of his road
in his eye.
There is probably not a general passen
g<r agent in the country who is as young
and. nt the same lime, at’the head of the
passenger business of such a big system
as the St. Louis and Safi Francisco. But
his youth is not against him, but rather in
his favor, lor he has all the energy of
young manhood and the wisdom that is
his naturally is supplemented by close
study of his profession to help him
along and make him due of the most thor
oughly equipped officials in the country.
It was three or four monihs ago that Mr.
Snyder was made general passenger agent.
He had had but little, if any, experience
in the passenger department, before his
appointment, and the officials who put him
in his present place, recognizing his worth,
took him from the position of assistant
eeneral freight agent.
Mr, Snyder knows there is to be a lot’of
military business out of Savannah for
momiis to come and some of it will go to
the far West. He wants his line to get
it.

The new English steamship Yarmouth,
which has been chartered by the Plant
system, will go on the line between Port
Tampa and Havana to-day, making her
first trip this afternoon. She is scheduled
to leave Port Tampa at 2 o’clock, and, as
she is a very fast boat, it is expected she
will arrive at Havana to-morrow morning
at 10 o’clock.
Mr. W. H. Wright, master of trains for
the division of the Plant System that has
headquarters at Waycross, was in the
city yesterday.
On account of the military convention
that is to be held at Tampa Feb. 8, the
railroads traversing the state have agreed
to a rate of one fare for the round trip
from a“i points in Florida. Tickets will be
sold Feb. 7, 8 and 9, and will have a final
limit of Feb. 13.
For three or four years past the Plant
System, passenger department has been ac
customed to get out very handsome play
ing cards adorned with beautiful half-tone
pictures of the leading hotels of the sys
tem. The cards are of a grade that would
make them very costly were they sold ac
cording to their quality, but, as they are
advertisements, the pnssenger department
sells them at cost price. The cards for
this year have just been received, and are
fully as handsome as those that have been
gotten out in former years.

Mr. Plant will join her there as soon as
his business will permit, and expects to

Two Concerts.
John Philip Sousa, the “March King,”
and his excellent band gave two concerts
at the theater yesterday and last night.
There was a good house at the afternoon
concert and last night the house was filled.
Miss Maud Reese Davies, the soprano
soloist, sang finely at both concerts. Miss
Dorothy Hoyle, who played violin solos at
both concerts, was especially fine, and
was encored twice.
Sousa was very gracious and responded
to encores whenever called upon. Among
the pieces played as encores were “The
Georgia Camp Meeting,” “A Hot Time In
the Old Tow r n,” “El Capitan,” and nearly
all of Sousa's marches.
Hoyt’s “A Stranger In New York” is
the attraction to-morrow night. Since the
comedy was presented here it has under
gone many changes; improvements have
been made, and it is claimed by Mr. Hoyt's
friends that in “A Stranger in New York”
as now constructed this playwright has
never shown a more thorough knowledge
of what makes the success of such a piece.
Its novel features, funny scenes and situ
ations stand out more boldly than ever.
The sale of seats for The Bostonians
which will be heard Friday night in Violo
Herbert's opera, “The Serenade,” begins
this morning. The story of the opera deals
with the jealously of an old Castlllian
duke, whose ward has fallen in love with
an unknown serenader. Subsequently, the
duke discovers that the serenader is Al
varado, a baritone. Several Incongruous
personages humming this song in the
presence of the duke are mistaken for
the rival and are incarcerated and his
many journeyings bring him in constant
contact with the fatal and worrying oong.
